Planning research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) has often focused
on problems where there are cascading levels of action choice and
complex interactions between actions. In contrast. Scheduling
research has focused on much larger problems where there is little
action choice, but the resulting ordering problem is hard. In this
paper, we give an overview of M planning and scheduling techniques,
focusing on their similarities, differences, and limitations. We
also argue that many difficult practical problems lie somewhere
between planning and scheduling, and that neither area has the
right set of tools for solving these vexing problems.

John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James "Jimmy" Gardiner,
the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada.
Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his
wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November
1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin
wrote to his father: "At long last we're going to take part in
something big which you will read all about in the papers long
before you get this letter." Edwin Gardiner was killed when his
plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost
two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war.
His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life
in October 1944, yet another casualty of war.
Whether it's the first-past-the-post electoral system or partisan
government appointees to the Senate, Canadians want better
representation and accountability from the federal government.
Before reforms can be enacted, however, it is important to explore
and clarify the relationships among Canada's three parliamentary
institutions: Crown, Senate, and Commons. In The Constitution in a
Hall of Mirrors, David E. Smith presents a learned but accessible
analysis of the interconnectedness of Canada's parliamentary
institutions. Smith argues that Parliament is a unity comprised of
three parts and any reforms made to one branch will, whether
intended or not, affect the other branches. Through a timely,
nuanced, and comprehensive examination of parliamentary debates,
committee reports, legal scholarship, and comparative analysis of
developments in the United Kingdom, Smith uncovers the substantial
degree of ambiguity that exists among Canadians and their calls for
structural and operational reforms. By illuminating the symbiotic
relationship between the Crown, Senate, and Commons, The
Constitution in a Hall of Mirrors brings government reform closer
to reality.

The enjoyable nectar of grapes and the business of bringing wine to
consumers has already had a long history, but never before has the
wine industry seen so much change. The Business of Wine is aimed at
anyone with an interest in broadening his or her view of wine to
encompass some of the fascinating complexities of the business side
of this international industry. The book provides substantive
insight into the structure and economics of the industry as well as
into the various trends and pressures which are currently affecting
it. Wine lovers can go to a bookstore and find a myriad of guides
to the wines of the world, however these volumes leave many gaps.
The Business of Wine provides a global overview of wine as a
business. While it is still possible to drive through Provence,
Napa Valley or Mendoza, unearthing a unique case of undiscovered
nectar, the real backbone of today's wine industry lies elsewhere.
The structure and complex functions of the wine industry form this
backbone and are examined in detail in The Business of Wine.
