The Book of Esther is one of two books of the Bible to be set
entirely outside of the Promised Land, and the only book which does
not mention God at all. In this cogent, readable study, David Firth
explores The Message of Esther, to help us better understand this
paradoxically important book and its implications for our own
contemporary context. With clear insight, he lay out how the
reality of God's presence is experienced against a backdrop of
God's relative anonymity and seeming absence, and shows us how that
speaks into the lives of Christians today. A revised volume in the
trusted Bible Speaks Today series of commentaries, The Message of
Esther offers an accessible and thought-provoking exposition of
Esther's story, that considers its meaning for both its original
audience and for Christians in the twenty-first century. Used by
Bible students and teachers around the world, The Bible Speaks
Today commentaries are ideal for students and preachers who want to
deepen their understanding of Scripture as it was first written as
well as its continued relevance today. This beautifully redesigned
edition has been sensitively updated to include modern references
and use the NIV Bible text. The Message of Esther is perfect for
anyone looking for a stimulating, accessible commentary on Esther
that will help them apply its lessons to their everyday life.
Callister's Materials Science and Engineering: An Introduction,
10th Edition promotes student understanding of the three primary
types of materials (metals, ceramics, and polymers) and composites,
as well as the relationships that exist between the structural
elements of materials and their properties.
Twenty Twenty Eight is a fast paced adventure set against a
background of political speculation, in the near future, when oil
and energy resources are entirely depleted. The story focuses on
the inter-action between the various characters and their enduring
love for one another, when confronted by a totalitarian state in
near collapse; a state that is being forced into surrender by
subversive gangs taking over the cities. The action centres on a
group of people who stockpile food, arms and ammunition in a
disused lead mine in order to defend themselves against desperate,
half-starved hoards pouring out of the cities. Eventually they
realise their situation is becoming hopeless and decide to escape
the horror altogether. Heading across country to a small schooner
they sail away to what they believe will be a new Utopia. But what
awaits them is something just as ominous. In this fast paced but
wonderfully evocative novel David Greason Walker paints a
strikingly vivid picture of how our world could be in the not too
distant future. But he also applauds love, adventure and wide
exotic landscapes, giving hope for the future however arduous life
may become. The story also explores the part myth, part reality of
our modern world; the spectacle of a life we are supposed to
believe in, as opposed to the truth behind the spectacle!
In this romantic adventure story David Greason Walker applauds
youth, life, love, adventure and the wide landscapes that are far
beyond the restrictions of a cosy fireside. The story explores the
twilight world between youth and adulthood, with its mixture of
idealism, love, realism and sheer caprice. When Carl Hafod first
meets Vreni outside a busy pub on a cold, snow-blown winter's day,
he is totally unaware of the new direction his life will follow;
including the discovery of a hoard of Nazi gold and how the gold
has political implications that have remained buried in secrecy
since World War Two. The story revolves not only around Carl and
Vreni, and Carl's business interests in Fiji, but also around the
lives of six other closely knit students. How they become victims
of the ever increasing value of the gold. The final decisions they
make and the all-encompassing passion Carl feels for Vreni and her
abject beauty.
This book explores the nature of the flexibility of Estonia's rapid
growth, that enables it to swiftly seize opportunities and weather
crises without undue cost. The distinguished cast of contributors
draws upon detailed data on individual firms and households to
explore the basis for Estonia's record as the most successful of
all the EU accession countries over the last decade. They conclude
that much of this accomplishment can be attributed to the greater
flexibility of the Estonian economy, both in price setting in
employment and wages, and in consumption. The book also reveals
that Estonia is able to adjust to shocks more rapidly and with less
real impact than other countries. Coupled with a favourable
macroeconomic policy and a good institutional structure and legal
framework, this indicates that Estonia will be an excellent example
to other countries despite the recent downturn. This unique book
will be of great interest to researchers and students of the
economics of transition, and will prove invaluable to policy-makers
and their advisors in both transition countries and the rest of the
EU, as well as graduate students studying microeconomics and
monetary policy.

Since its beginnings in the 1850s, Eugene has attracted independent
thinkers. Its early leaders sited the town in a picturesque
location along the Willamette River and were confident that
agriculture and timber businesses would guide its growth. As Eugene
transformed from a settlement to a city, its citizens took an
active voice in the creation of its identity, like advocating for a
main railroad line to run through town and determining how the
commercial district would branch out from the central downtown
core. Today, the population continues to express strong and diverse
feelings about politics, personal rights, and the environment as it
shares the common experience of living and working in a place of
great natural beauty.
What impact do random events have on individuals? How do they adapt
to living in an uncertain, stochastic environment? Risk and
Uncertainty in Economics pays tribute to the significant
contribution made by James L. Ford to our understanding of these
questions. In keeping with Professor Ford's own research interests,
the essays in this volume include relevant, up-to-date research on
a wide range of issues. Contributions by Michael Driscoll, Marcus
Miller, David Peel and Somnath Sen consider the macroeconomic
impact of risk and uncertainty. Colin Dodds, Atul Dar, Andrew
Mullineux, Mansoob Murshed and David Dickinson evaluate various
implications of risk and uncertainty for financial markets. John
Hey, the late George Shackle, Prasanta Pattanaik and Richard
Barrett contribute papers on decision making under risk and
uncertainty, while Peter Phillips presents some new statistical
results on the Dirichlet distribution. This book will be of
interest to all economists who want to understand the importance of
analysing the impact of risk and uncertainty in economics.

Cast iron cookware is an increasingly hot item in the antique
marketplace. Collectors are scouring antique shops, shows, and flea
markets searching for treasures to add to their collections; and
hunting for more information about the products' history and
manufacturers. In response to this growing demand, David Smith and
Chuck Wafford have created another authoritative guide to
collectible cast iron. This book continues where The Book of
Griswold & Wagner left off-illustrating hundreds of items not
included in the previous book. With over 845 photographs of cast
iron pieces from the Wagner, Griswold, Lodge, Vollrath, Excelsior,
and Martin manufacturing companies, this book delves into the
histories and products produced by these manufacturers. Complete
with pattern numbers, catalog list numbers, price guide, index, and
much more; this book is a must-have for all cast iron cookware
collectors.
The story of Medicaid comes alive for readers in this strong
narrative, including detailed accounts of important policy changes
and extensive use of interviews. A central theme of the book is
that Medicaid is a "weak entitlement," one less established or
effectively defended than Medicare or Social Security, but more
secure than welfare or food stamps. In their analysis, the authors
argue that the future of Medicaid is sound. It has the flexibility
to be adapted by states as well as to allow for policy innovation.
At the same time, the program lacks an effective mechanism for
overall reform. They note Medicaid has become a source of perennial
political controversy as it has grown to become the largest health
insurance system in the country. The book's dual emphasis on
politics and policy is important in making the arcane Medicaid
program accessible to readersand in distinguishing policy grounded
in analysis from partisan ideology. This second edition features a
new preface, three new chapters accounting for the changes to the
Affordable Care Act, and an updated glossary.

Workers and their families, employers, and society as a whole
benefit when providers deliver the best quality of care to injured
workers and when they know how to provide effective services for
both prevention and fitness for duty and understand why, instead of
just following regulations. Designed for professionals who deliver,
manage, and hold oversight responsibility for occupational health
in an organization or in the community, Occupational Health
Services guides the busy practitioner and clinic manager in setting
up, running, and improving healthcare services for the prevention,
diagnosis, treatment, and occupational management of work-related
health issues. The text covers: an overview of occupational health
care in the US and Canada: how it is organized, who pays for what,
how it is regulated, and how workers' compensation works how
occupational health services are managed in practice, whether
within a company, as a global network, in a hospital or medical
group practice, as a free-standing clinic, or following other
models management of core services, including recordkeeping,
marketing, service delivery options, staff recruitment and
evaluation, and program evaluation depth and detail on specific
services, including clinical service delivery for injured workers,
periodic health surveillance, impairment assessment, fitness for
duty, alcohol and drug testing, employee assistance, mental health,
health promotion, emergency management, global health management,
and medico-legal services. This highly focused and relevant
combined handbook and textbook is aimed at improving the provision
of care and health protection for workers and will be of use to
both managers and health practitioners from a range of backgrounds,
including but not limited to medicine, nursing, health services
administration, and physical therapy.

Low carbon technology transfer to developing countries has been
both a lynchpin of, and a key stumbling block to a global deal on
climate change. This book brings together for the first time in one
place the work of some of the world's leading contemporary
researchers in this field. It provides a practical, empirically
grounded guide for policy makers and practitioners, while at the
same time making new theoretical advances in combining insights
from the literature on technology transfer and the literature on
low carbon innovation.
The book begins by summarizing the nature of low carbon
technology transfer and its contemporary relevance in the context
of climate change, before introducing a new theoretical framework
through which effective policy mechanisms can be analyzed. The
north-south, developed-developing country differences and synergies
are then introduced together with the relevant international policy
context. Uniquely, the book also introduces questions around the
extent to which current approaches to technology transfer under the
international policy regime might be considered to be 'pro-poor'.
Throughout, the book draws on cutting edge empirical work to
illustrate the insights it affords. The book concludes by setting
out constructive ways forward towards delivering on existing
international commitments in this area, including practical tools
for decision makers.
A beautifully illustrated introduction to the lives of butterflies
around the world There are more than fifteen thousand butterfly
species in the world, fluttering through a wide variety of
habitats. Bright and beautiful, butterflies also have fascinating
life histories and play an important role in our planet’s
ecosystems. The Lives of Butterflies showcases the extraordinary
range of colors and patterns of the world’s butterflies while
exploring their life histories, behavior, habitats and resources,
populations, seasonality, defense and natural enemies, and threats
and conservation. With remarkable photography, graphic
illustration, and profiles of thirty-five selected species, this
comprehensive and inviting book discusses dozens of key topics,
including eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalids; flight, feeding,
courtship, and mating; migration and hibernation; concealment,
mimicry, and predators; habitat loss and fragmentation, climate
change, and pesticides; and farming and gardening to support and
attract butterflies. With its stunning illustrations and clear,
up-to-date, and authoritative text, The Lives of Butterflies will
appeal to a wide range of butterfly and nature lovers.
Power and Party in an English City provides an account of how
decisions are taken by the state at the level of locality. More
specifically, it is an account of the private policy-making
activities of a ruling Labour group of councillors in the major
English city of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Despite the fact that local
government in most of the towns and cities of England is one-party
government, very little is known abotu the private behaviour of
ruling party groups. In this book David Green provides a
penetrating empirical study of the realities of local government.
The author seeks to examine and analyse the importance of party
discipline, the relationship between the Labour group of
councillors and the party outside the council, the power of the
committee chairmen, the role of local patronage and the openness of
the local policy-making process. The government of Newcastle is
perhaps the most closely association in the public mind with T. Dan
Smith, the corrupt local politician. In fact, Smith had left local
politics in Newcastle in teh mid-1960s. How was the city being run
a decade or so later? This study is however much more than an
inside view of the affairs of a single authority. The last part of
the book is devoted to a discussion of aspects of some traditional
and modern theories of democracy and specifically to what author
sees as the inadequate advocacy of participatory democracy in
recent years. Green makes a major contribution to our thinking
about the kind of democracy that is possible in modern large-scale
societies, explores weaknesses of moder theories and puts forward
some original modifications to modern democratic theory, in the
light of a theory of knowledge which is seen as more appropriate
for modern natural and social scientific activity. This book was
first published in 1981.
This detailed reference provides guidelines for the selection and
utilization of electric motors for improved reliability,
performance, energy-efficiency, and life-cycle cost. Completely
revised and expanded, the book reflects the recent state of the
field, as well as recent developments in control electronics, the
economics of energy-efficient motors and systems, and advanced
power electronic drivers. It includes five new chapters covering
key topics such as the fundamentals of power electronics applicable
to electric motor drives, adjustable speed drives and their
applications, advanced switched reluctance motor drives, and
permanent magnet and brushless DC motor drives.
Originally published in 1994, this book examines the importance of
family agricultural systems in both the developed and the
developing worlds. Throughout the world, and throughout history,
the family unit has been at the heart of agricultural systems.
Working together, families not only furnish their own needs, but
form the basis for society itself: they provide the labour,
population, resources and the market to maintain much of the
world’s economic and social development. But the global race for
financial prosperity, with its large-scale intensive farming
techniques, is increasingly undermining the family’s role in food
production and social cohesion. This book explores both traditional
and modern farming techniques and looks at their different
consequences for national agricultural resources and for rural
societies. Finally, it suggests ways in which technology can be
harnessed to meet the needs of the family rather than undermine it,
in order to achieve a viable and sustainable agriculture for the
future.
First published in 2002. This is Volume XI of twelve in the Library
of Philosophy series on Ethics. This study is the author's
criticism of some political and ethical conceptions outlined on
Natural Rights and was written in 1894.
