Contemporary Environmentalism in the Baltic States - From Phosphate Springs to 'Nordstream' (Paperback): David... Contemporary Environmentalism in the Baltic States - From Phosphate Springs to 'Nordstream' (Paperback)
David Galbreath
R1,497 Discovery Miles 14 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the relationship between environmentalism and political transition in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Environmentalism was a strong force behind the nationalist movements preceding the independence of the Baltic States and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union. The contributors illustrate how the Baltic States face contemporary environmental challenges through transition, enlargement and integration into the European Union. This edited collection brings the reader through the political, economic and social changes of the post-Soviet Baltic States as a way of examining how transition influences environmentalism. Secondly, the book looks at how the enlargement of the European Union to encompass the Baltic States has influenced political and legal approaches to the environment. Finally, the contributors examine how regional and global environmental narratives have shaped contemporary environmentalism in the Baltic States. From 'eco-nationalism' to the world's first 'green' prime minister, environmentalism continues to play an important role in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Baltic Studies.

Defence Studies (Hardcover): David Galbreath, Alex Neads Defence Studies (Hardcover)
David Galbreath, Alex Neads
R26,642 Discovery Miles 266 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Those working in Defence Studies explore the convergence between war and politics. It is, in the words of the editor of this new Routledge collection, 'the socio-technological study of how martial force is understood, built, and deployed'. Indeed, the term 'Defence Studies' has its origins in the establishment in 1927 of the UK's Imperial Defence College (later named the Royal College for Defence Studies in 1970), but research falling under that rubric has long been a global endeavour. Scholars of Defence Studies ask questions such as: What are the driving factors of defence policy? Why is history important for understanding emergent warfare? How might actors prepare for defence and war? Are defence policies appropriate for expected events? Now, in response to the need for an authoritative reference work to make sense of a rapidly growing and ever more complex corpus of literature, Routledge announces a new title in its Critical Concepts in Military, Strategic, and Security Studies series. Edited by David J. Galbreath, Professor of International Security at the University of Bath, and Director of its Centre for War and Technology, Defence Studies is a four-volume collection which brings together the very best scholarship in a one-stop anthology of major works. The collection is fully indexed and includes a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context. It is destined to be valued by researchers, teachers, and advanced students as a vital research and pedagogic resource.

Nation–Building and Minority Politics in Post–So – Interests, Influence, and Identities in Estonia and Latvia... Nation–Building and Minority Politics in Post–So – Interests, Influence, and Identities in Estonia and Latvia (Paperback)
David Galbreath, David Smith
R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Despite socialism's best efforts, ethnic identity remained a salient feature in Central and Eastern Europe. Not only did ethno-nationalism help to bring about the fall of the socialist regimes in this region, but it also characterized much of the post-socialist politics. Nation-Building and Minority Politics examines the issue of minority politics in post-socialist states within this dual structure. In particular, it offers an in-depth analysis of post-restoration politics in Estonia and Latvia, covering four issues. First, it looks at the historical context of the current group relations. Second, the study explores the domestic nature of minority politics in Estonia and Latvia by looking at domestic politics and policies. Third, it examines the role of the Russian Federation as an 'external national homeland' through illustrating developments within Russian foreign policy. Finally, the book analyses the role of three significant European organizations, namely the OSCE, EU and the Council of Europe as agents of 'conditionality'. Overall, this study combines old and new theoretical approaches to nation-building and minority politics to exhibit the changing nature of the relationship between majority, minority, external national homeland, and international organizations in today's Europe.
