Why are some people more vulnerable to common mental disorders than others? What effects do genes and environments exert on the development of mental disorders? The Origins and Course of Common Mental Disorders describes the nature, characteristics and causes of common emotional and behavioural disorders as they develop across the lifespan, providing a clear and concise account of recent advances in our knowledge of the origins and history of anxious, depressive, anti-social, and substance related disorders. Combining a lifespan approach with developments in neurobiology, this book describes the epidemiology of emotional and behavioural disorders in childhood, adolescence and adult life. David Goldberg and Ian Goodyer demonstrate how both genes and environments exert different but key effects on the development of these disorders and suggest a developmental model as the most appropriate for determining vulnerabilities for psychopathology. Divided into four sections, the book covers: the nature and distribution of common mental disorders the biological basis of common disorders the human life cycle relevant to common disorders the developmental model. This highly readable account of the origins of emotional and behavioural disorders will be of interest to behavioural science students and all mental health professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and counsellors.

Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine is a collection of papers written by the celebrated psychiatrist, Michael Shepherd, who was one of the originators of psychiatric epidemiology in the UK and a leading social psychiatrist of his generation. He designed and implemented some of the first systematic studies into what are now widely recognised clinical syndromes. His extensive research experience and his advocacy of a scientific approach to social psychiatry form the basis of the essays contained in this book. Covering such issues as the development of research strategy and the difficulties involved in completing psychiatric studies, Shepherd's papers address many of the issues currently facing professionals in this field. He writes authoritatively and engagingly on clinical syndromes, the history of ideas and the use of the epidemiological approach in psychiatry. Conceptual Issues in Psychological Medicine stimulates and informs the reader in equal measure; it will be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of any practitioner of medicine.
Across the world, cities are becoming larger, as populations drift from the country into urban areas. At the same time, the mentally ill are leaving the mental hospitals and new forms of care are being found in the community. The best ways in which services for the mentally ill can be organized in the community is still a matter for debate, and as cities become larger problems may become greater.; This text compares mental health services in London with those in Amsterdam, Baltimore, Bangalore, Copenhagen, Kobe, Madison, Porto Alegre, Sydney, Teheran and Verona. It describes arrangements that work in practice, and includes some of the ideas and practices in mental health services.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression (MD) form the largest group of common mental disorders. These two conditions often occur together, and emerging evidence suggests several similarities between them. As we move toward revising the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders for DSM-V, Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V explores the nosologic relationship between GAD and MD. In this comprehensive manual, more than 45 contributors cover a wide range of empirical and conceptual issues that face clinicians and researchers working with GAD and MD today. This book acts as a guidepost for the entire DSM process. It reviews recent scientific advances in our understanding of the interrelationship between GAD and MD, summarizes the body of evidence into a few broad conclusions, and reflects on the implications of these findings for future nosologic efforts. The contributing authors review empirical data from a variety of perspectives -- including genetics, biology, treatment, development, course, predictors, disability, and psychosocial stressors -- and then integrate results from research on all these diverse validators to come up with a single "bottom-line" recommendation regarding the relationship between GAD and MD. In addition, the book considers conceptual issues, such as criteria for results from validators, the relevance of results on symptoms of anxiety and depression, weights of different classes of validators, and the rules for assigning disorders into categories. And finally, it addresses the question of what new kinds of data could be gathered that would help to clarify the relationship between MD and GAD more definitively. Each chapter includes tables, charts, and references to enhance the evidence presented on such diverse topics as: - A thorough review of the genetics of GAD and MD- The role of psychotropics in distinguishing between GAD and MD- Biological and treatment aspects of GAD and MD- Psychometric aspects of GAD and MD- Childhood risk factors associated with GAD and MD- Common mental disorders across cultures Diagnostic Issues in Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V develops operationalized criteria for nosologic decisions that enable clinicians to bridge the gap between data to diagnostic recommendations. Not only does the methodology of investigating an active interchange between empirical and conceptual perspectives shed new light on the relationship between GAD and MD, but it also carries implications for the rest of DSM-V.
Using data from a wide selection of states including EU members and the US, this new work on media regulation analyses and compares developments across the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors. Using national studies, the book examines the ability of the law and other regulatory techniques to influence such a rapidly changing area. It exposes clearly the regulatory choices that are being made to control the so-called 'new media', including the internet, as well as examining the methods used to govern the more conventional media.
There have been major changes to mental health services internationally in recent years revolving around the concept of care in the community. Although speed of change and precise service mechanisms differ between countries there is nevertheless increasingly widespread consensus on key components essential to adequate care provision. This in turn provides an opportunity to develop a widely acceptable model framework to direct future developments. There is certainly still room for reform in recognition of specific needs and improvements in treatment and care intervention. This book proposes a simple model which can be used as a guide to increased clinical effectiveness through focused evidence-based reform. Using a time/space framework, it is intended to act as a practical aid to diagnosis of strengths and weaknesses in services that will be used by care providers, trainees and planners both at local and higher levels.

Mental illness causes a substantial health burden in all regions of the world, and is a major contributor to world poverty. Developing a National Mental Health Policy is designed to support those involved in developing locally appropriate mental health policies, emphasising the crucial role of primary care, NGOs, the social sector, schools and workplaces, and the criminal justice system as well as the specialist mental health services. The book addresses the principles of human rights, mental health legislation, mental health information systems, human resources, accountability and financing as well as key cultural issues. It gives a comprehensive and up to date account of the task of tailoring mental health services to the needs of countries in the post-institutional era.
Few subjects invoke such passion as the history and current situation of Jews in Western societies. David Goldberg, a progressive Rabbi with many years' experience of dealing with other faiths and other Jews, takes the most difficult issues of this fraught relationship and confronts them head on. He argues that it is wrong to equate anti-Semitism with anti-Zionism, that it is far more difficult to be a Muslim in twenty-first century Britain than it is to be a Jew, that Israel is far too often treated sentimentally and that the identification of Israel with the Holocaust - memorializing the latter and sacralising the former - has had baneful effects. His discussion of the perennial question, 'who is a Jew?', is equally trenchant: he rejects all strict rabbinic criteria, proposing that a Jew is simply anyone who insists that he or she is one. Forthright, challenging and witty, This is Not the Way will spark debate, criticism and delight in equal measure.

The contributors to this volume aim to refute the notion that racism is basically a set of irrational prejudices. Using scientific theory, philosophical reasoning and concepts of morality they examine the nature of racism conceptually and historically to reveal its diverse character as described in the body of scientific and philosophical, socio-political, legal and cultural literature. By identifying and analyzing the manifestations of racism, they attempt to facilitate and understanding of this complex subject.

This book is a reference guide for practitioners to the major legal and regulatory issues in the field, but could also be used as a media law textbook for a course of academic study. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field. Throughout the book, the authors cover the relevant aspects of law governing the media in its many forms, with an emphasis on the practical operation of the law in this sector. It not only discusses the theoretical basis of legal concepts such as defamation, but also analyzes the application of the law in the high paced environment of daily newspapers, the changing reality of what constitutes "broadcasting," including the regulation of distribution channels, and the regulation of material distributed via those channels, and examines the implications for defamation law of the online, borderless world. Amongst other things, the book also covers intellectual property issues in the media, with a specific emphasis on copyright works, trade marks and the exploitation of intellectual property via licensing. The work primarily discusses the identified themes in the context of UK and EU laws. |
