Digital Design and Computer Architecture, RISC-V Edition (Paperback): Sarah L. Harris, David Harris Digital Design and Computer Architecture, RISC-V Edition (Paperback)
Sarah L. Harris, David Harris
R2,292 Discovery Miles 22 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The newest addition to the Harris and Harris family of Digital Design and Computer Architecture books, this RISC-V Edition covers the fundamentals of digital logic design and reinforces logic concepts through the design of a RISC-V microprocessor. Combining an engaging and humorous writing style with an updated and hands-on approach to digital design, this book takes the reader from the fundamentals of digital logic to the actual design of a processor. By the end of this book, readers will be able to build their own RISC-V microprocessor and will have a top-to-bottom understanding of how it works. Beginning with digital logic gates and progressing to the design of combinational and sequential circuits, this book uses these fundamental building blocks as the basis for designing a RISC-V processor. SystemVerilog and VHDL are integrated throughout the text in examples illustrating the methods and techniques for CAD-based circuit design. The companion website includes a chapter on I/O systems with practical examples that show how to use SparkFun's RED-V RedBoard to communicate with peripheral devices such as LCDs, Bluetooth radios, and motors. This book will be a valuable resource for students taking a course that combines digital logic and computer architecture or students taking a two-quarter sequence in digital logic and computer organization/architecture.

Radical Otherness - Sociological and Theological Approaches (Paperback): Lisa Isherwood, David Harris Radical Otherness - Sociological and Theological Approaches (Paperback)
Lisa Isherwood, David Harris
R1,194 Discovery Miles 11 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The problem of otherness is central to debates in both the social sciences and theology. To define the other - by colour, gender, politics, nationality, or religion - is to define the self. Othering has been used through history as a justification for boundary-setting, for conflict and for oppression. Radical Otherness presents a broad overview of otherness in both sociology and theology. The book reveals how social theory can illuminate many contemporary issues in theology, whilst the examination of theological methods can shed light on problematic issues in sociology. The discussion of issues in Radical Otherness moves from the personal to the political, to the hermeneutic, to the ultimate otherness of metaphysics. At each stage, discussion of theory is grounded in concrete examples. The book offers students of ethics, theology, and sociology of religion a clear and engaged assessment of otherness, and opens up new ways for investigating a concept central to the study of both religion and society.

David Harris
R4,148 Discovery Miles 41 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A Society of Signs? is an introduction to current debates around the themes of culture, identity and lifestyle. Such debates often begin with the assertion that we live in a "society of signs." A Society of Signs? will help students of sociology, media and cultural studies to make sense of these often complicated arguments. It summarizes and critically discusses some basic approaches in social theory and cultural analysis; offers specific reading of some of the work of writers including Barthes and Giddens; reviews work in more traditional areas, for example, the sociology of identity and the embedding process found in social life; and gives advice on further reading.

From Class Struggle to the Politics of Pleasure - The Effects of Gramscianism on Cultural Studies (Hardcover): David Harris From Class Struggle to the Politics of Pleasure - The Effects of Gramscianism on Cultural Studies (Hardcover)
David Harris
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"From Class Struggle to the Politics of Pleasure" arises from reading and teaching Gramscian work in cultural studies, education, media studies, leisure and politics over the last twenty years. It argues that Gramscian work is undoubtedly powerful and persuasive. Indeed by the 1990s one can almost say that it has become the governing orthodoxy. Harris reads the work critically and in detail, tracing arguments across time and across different specialisms, assessing them, and trying to examine how they deal with critics and with challenging topics. He maintains that cultural studies contains many absences, silences and closures, and that it deploys a number of narrative techniques to remain credible.
Wide-ranging and critical, "From Class Struggle to the Politics of Pleasure" is an ideal critical assessment of one of the most fashionable and powerful intellectual traditions in contemporary social science. This book will help students to critically read Gramscian work and decide where its strengths and weaknesses lie for themselves, making them less dependent on the Gramscians' own accounts and agendas.

Sierra Leone - A Political History (Paperback): David Harris Sierra Leone - A Political History (Paperback)
David Harris
R653 Discovery Miles 6 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Sierra Leone came to world attention in the 1990s when a catastrophic civil war linked to the diamond trade was reported globally. This fleeting and particular interest, however, obscured two crucial processes in this small West African state. On the one hand, while the civil war was momentous and brutal, affecting all Sierra Leoneans, it was also just one element in the long and faltering attempt to build a nation and state, given the country’s immensely problematic pre-colonial and British colonial legacies. On the other, the aftermath of the war precipitated a huge international effort to construct a ‘liberal peace’, with mixed results, and interrupted by the devastating Ebola pandemic. This made Sierra Leone a laboratory for both post-conflict and health crisis interventions. Sierra Leone examines over 230 years of its history and sixty years of independence, placing state–society relations at the centre of an original and revealing investigation of those who have tried to rule or change Sierra Leone and its inhabitants, and the responses engendered. It interweaves the historical narrative with sketches of politicians, anecdotes, the landscape and environment and key turning-points, alongside theoretical and other comparisons with the rest of Africa. It is a new contribution to the debate for those who already know Sierra Leone and a solid point of entry for those who wish to.

The evidence suggests that many solar programs are being designed and implemented in isolation and without reliance on published guidelines or the experience gained by others. The conclusion is obvious: the likelihood of a program being successful would be greatly improved if program implementers were made more aware of best practice guidelines and of the lessons and experience learned by others in implementing previous programs. Furthermore, the best practice guidelines not only need to be readily available but need to describe the stages, issues and the stakeholders' roles in designing and implementing a SHS program. This book showcases a detailed road map that has been developed for the implementation of rural electrification projects in developing countries using solar PV. Features of this book will be case studies derived from personal participatory observation of the authors on Solar Home Systems, their impact, their advantages and disadvantages and their operation.

The Fifteenth Century XIII - Exploring the Evidence: Commemoration, Administration and the Economy (Hardcover): Linda Clark The Fifteenth Century XIII - Exploring the Evidence: Commemoration, Administration and the Economy (Hardcover)
Linda Clark; Contributions by Christian Steer, Christopher Dyer, David Harry, Euan C. Roger, …
R2,333 Discovery Miles 23 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This series [pushes] the boundaries of knowledge and [develops] new trends in approach and understanding. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW Of necessity, historians of the late Middle Ages have to rely on an eclectic mix of sources, ranging from the few remaining medieval buildings, monuments, illuminated manuscripts and miscellaneous artefacts, to a substantial but often uncatalogued body of documentary material, much of it born of the medieval administrator's penchant for record keeping. Exploring this evidence requires skills in lateral thinking and interpretation - qualities which are manifested in this volume. Employing the copious legal records kept by the English Crown, one essay reveals the thinking behind exceptions to pardons sold by successive kings, while another, using clerical taxation returns, adds colour to contemporary criticism of friars for betraying their vows of poverty. Case studies of the registers of two hospitals, one in London the other in Canterbury, lead to insights into the relations of their administrators with civic and spiritual authorities. A textual dissection of the epilogues in William Caxton's early printed works focuses on the universal desire for commemoration. Other essays about royal livery collars and the English coinage are nourished by material remains, and where contemporary records fail to survive, as in the listing of burials in parish churches, notes kept by sixteenth-century heralds and antiquaries provide clues for novel identifications. The book-ends are exemplars of the historian's craft: the one, taking as its starting point the will of Ralph, Lord Cromwell, explores in forensic detail how his executors coped with their enormous task in a time of civil war; the other,by examining research into the economy of fifteenth-century England undertaken since the 1880s, provides an over-view which scholars of the period will find invaluable. Contributors: Martin Allen, Christopher Dyer, David Harry, Susanne Jenks, Maureen Jurkowski, Simon Payling, Euan Roger, Christian Steer, Sheila Sweetinburgh, Matthew Ward.

John Grant and his wife Susan are a middle-class couple who, after dropping off their ailing daughter at the children's department of St Richard's Hospital in Chichester, decide to visit the local auction rooms. They fall in love with and buy a beautiful scenic painting from the late 19th century which depicts a young boy fishing by the local River Arun. However, unbeknown to the couple, its origins lie deep in a calamity that happened long ago. And when they get it back to their farmhouse, it gradually begins to dawn that their beautiful picture is acting as a portal for past misfortunes, with the result that their lives and those of their children become progressively evermore of a hell. To make matters worse, their daughter's nanny feels her love for John is more than she can bear, and leaves without saying goodbye. John's sadness suddenly becomes intensified when, several years later, he learns she's dying of cancer. When he's finally informed of her flight to a clinic in Florida he realises he will never see her again. But then, despite all the odds, one definitive day, he does.
