A collection of essays to celebrate the seventy-fifth birthday of the artist Stass Paraskos. Born into a peasant family in Cyprus in 1933, Paraskos went to England to work as a waiter in a Greek restaurant. There he met a group of artists from Leeds College of Art who persuaded him to join their college. Paraskos never looked back, going on to be a celebrated artist and educator. He became Head of Painting at the University for Creative Arts, and founder of the Cyprus College of Art, the first art college in his homeland of Cyprus. This book places Paraskos in context and deals with major events in his life, including the notorious trial in Leeds, in 1966, when he was prosecuted for obscenity following an exhibition of his paintings.

Goss Rogers, returns from the DC area to his home state. His attractive girlfriend despises "this hick haven," but sticks around because, "the eroticism he had brought to her was as intoxicating as anything she had ever known." Later, she begins to question his strange behavior, including his attempt to solve a local mystery by bunking down in a snake-infested graveyard. One night, a horribly disfigured local breaks into their shack and attempts to rape her, but she is saved by Goss at the last minute. Later Goss is attacked by a viscous dog, but during the attack the dog is horribly mutilated and killed by an unidentified creature. During Goss's recovery, he is treated by a female doctor who takes a shine to him and later seduces him. Afterwards, he becomes involved in a horrific scenario in his pursuit of the "creature on the hill."

Rowing on the Waitemata to grab the latest news from incoming ships. Rushing out a special afternoon edition to the paper boys' cries of 'Extra! Extra!' Crime and shipping news, the arrival of Governor Grey and the fall of Ruapekapeka Pa. From the mid-nineteenth-century rivalry between the New Zealander and the Southern Cross to the establishment of the New Zealand Herald and the Auckland Star as the two papers that would dominate Auckland newspaper life through the twentieth century, the story of Auckland's newspapers is an engrossing battle of wits that reveals much about the history of the people and the press in New Zealand. In Extra! Extra! David Hastings, an accomplished journalist and historian, has undertaken substantial research on numerous newspapers in one period in one town in order both to tell that story and to tackle larger questions. Was it politics or commerce, readers' whims or something else that drove the rise and fall of newspaper empires? Did newspapers lead or follow public opinion on social and political issues? Were they shaped by their owners or their editors? And was the newspaper world in 1900 driven by different forces than that of 1845? The newspaper wars of nineteenth-century Auckland were life or death struggles - with the odds heavily in favour of death. Extra! Extra! tells the story of the newspapers, the editors and reporters and owners who made them, and the readers who decided what was news and which papers would live or die.
