Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad

images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
his is the first account in English of the entire, forty year
military career of one of the most powerful women of the Middle
Ages. Challenging the boundaries between military and gender
history, it explains how one famous noblewoman rose to the defense
of the reforming papacy, defeated the Holy Roman Emperor and turned
the tide of the first great war between Church and State. Despite
the neglect of Matilda in the English-speaking world, sources for
her life are both abundant and diverse. She issued over 130
surviving diplomas, patronized an influential circle of scholars,
corresponded frequently with several popes (including Gregory VII
and Urban II), and commissioned the monk Donizo to write her
biography (which he composed in epic Latin verse). Her campaigns
also provoked a storm of controversy in the pamphlet literature of
the 'Investiture Contest'. The Military Leadership of Matilda of
Canossa adopts an interdisciplinary perspective towards this
material, reading the narrative sources against the letters,
polemics, diplomas and canonical collections. It then combines them
all to reconstruct Matilda's campaigns in painstaking detail. The
book concludes by reconsidering the limits of medieval women's
military agency in light of the countess's demonstrable successes
on the battlefield and in the war of propaganda. This work will be
of greatest value to specialists in medieval gender, military
and/or church history (especially those with an interest in the
'Investiture Contest'). Undergraduates should also find it
accessible, since all Latin quotations are translated and the
introduction provides a primer on the 'Investiture Contest'.
The aim of this book is to demystify the technology of stage
lighting, and it does so by uniting its text with quotations from
literature, thus setting a common ground for the perception and
understanding of light, in our daily lives as well as on stage.

The Future of Auditing provides a concise overview of the function
of auditing and the future challenges it faces, underpinned with
suggestions for future research. It evaluates the key challenges
facing the profession, such as quality, competition, and
governance, as well as highlighting the under-explored areas of
ethics, fraud, and judgement. The emphasis throughout is on the
value of audit, and the importance of auditing research. Providing
an original assessment of global versus national auditing,
evidence-based auditing standards, and the structure of
professional firms, David Hay critically examines the value of
auditing from different standpoints. He critically reviews current
assumptions about the value of audits of financial statements, and
explores research opportunities and priorities to improve
understanding of the value of auditing and its future role and
function. This authoritative but accessible guide to the future of
auditing and the challenges it faces will be useful not only to
auditing researchers, but also to policy makers, standard setters,
financial journalists, and auditing professionals seeking an
accessible overview of current and future issues in auditing.

Spirituality is increasingly acknowledged to be an essential part
of child development. David Hay argues for the inclusion of
spiritual awareness as a cross-curricular element in the school
syllabus to promote the development of morality and social
cohesion. While culturally constructed pressures and the decline in
institutional religion have led to the suppression of spiritual
expression, children are, the author maintains, capable of profound
and meaningful beliefs from an early age. A three-year research
study into young children's spirituality and its survival value
informs Hay's view that spirituality in education needs to overcome
traditional approaches and should adopt a theory of spirituality
that includes religion but is not confined to it. This stimulating
book will encourage educators, parents and others involved in
teaching children to consider new approaches to foster children's
natural spiritual development.
In his book, zoologist Dr. Hay documents the repudiation of
religion in the West, describes the historical and economic context
of European secularism, and considers recent developments in the
neurophysiology of the brain as it relates to religious experience.
