Luther: A Giant Among Leaders When called to account for himself in front of the emperor and representatives of the people—a single assembly embodying the greatest political and religious powers of the day—Luther defended his writings and pronouncements. Facing excommunication and execution, he was given a last chance to recant. He refused, replying that his conscience was bound by the Word of God. The nearly five centuries that have passed since that trial still reverberate with his final declaration to those powerful dignitaries: "Here I stand." This book focuses on that place where all of us must stand if we want to lead others to a better community, a better society, a better world.

Statesman and Saint - The Principled Politics of William Wilberforce (Hardcover): David J. Vaughan Statesman and Saint - The Principled Politics of William Wilberforce (Hardcover)
David J. Vaughan
R656 Discovery Miles 6 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"God has set before me two great objects: the abolition of the slave trade and the reformation of manners". These immortal words penned by William Wilberforce in 1787 were the beginning of his lifelong crusade as a Christian statesman and philanthropist. He became a member of the British Parliament for his hometown of Hull in 1780 and represented Yorkshire in 1784, a seat he retained until 1812.

This moving biography of Wilberforce tells the story of his religious conversion in 1784 and his rise to leadership of the Clapham Sect -- a group of evangelicals active in political, philanthropic, and religious causes. Under his leadership, the "Saints", as they were called, championed parliamentary and prison reforms, missionary endeavors, Bible distribution, and a host of other charitable efforts and organizations. These causes included the Church Missionary Society (established in 1799) and the British and Foreign Bible Society (founded in 1804).

Statesman and Saint also describes Wilberforce's unrelenting forty-year crusade against slavery, in spite of many defeats in Parliament. He labored for eighteen years to secure the abolition of the slave trade, enduring personal criticism, deep-seated prejudice, and threats on his life for another twenty-six years before he saw the Emancipation Bill finally passed in July 1833. His influential book, A Practical View, laid the foundation for the moral elevation of the Victorian Era that followed his death only three days after the Emancipation Bill was passed in Parliament.

Theoretical Geochemistry - Applications of Quantum Mechanics in the Earth and Mineral Sciences (Hardcover, New): John A.... Theoretical Geochemistry - Applications of Quantum Mechanics in the Earth and Mineral Sciences (Hardcover, New)

This work is based on the observation that further major advances in geochemistry, particularly in understanding the rules that govern the ways in which elements come together to form minerals and rocks, will require the application of the theories of quantum mechanics. The book therefore outlines this theoretical background and discusses the models used to describe bonding in geochemical systems. It is the first book to describe and critically review the application of quantum mechanical theories to minerals and geochemical systems. The book consolidates valuable findings from chemistry and materials science as well as mineralogy and geochemistry, and the presentation has relevance to professionals in a wide range of disciplines. Experimental techniques are surveyed, but the emphasis is on applying theoretical tools to various groups of minerals: the oxides, silicates, carbonates, borates, and sulfides. Other topics dealt with in depth include structure, stereochemistry, bond strengths and stabilities of minerals, various physical properties, and the overall geochemical distribution of the elements.
