Teaching at Scale - Improving Access, Outcomes, and Impact Through Digital Instruction (Paperback): David Joyner Teaching at Scale - Improving Access, Outcomes, and Impact Through Digital Instruction (Paperback)
David Joyner
R1,080 Discovery Miles 10 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Teaching at Scale explores the characteristics and parameters of large-scale online learning by identifying, in its perceived drawbacks, a wealth of educational opportunities in disguise. Scalable learning platforms have exploded in popularity over recent years, with MOOCS (massive open online courses), online degree programs, informal learning communities, and alternative credentials all drawing significant enrollments. But, as many educators are asking, are the challenges to delivering education at scale too great and the compromises too many? This book guides instructors to leverage their complex responsibilities-open-ended assessments at scale, individuated feedback to students, academic integrity in less controlled environments, and more-into significant assets. Informed by real-world institutional experience as well as key research in cognitive science and the learning sciences, each chapter provides practical strategies for educators and administrators seeking to solve problems and fulfill the high-quality, broad-access potential of large-scale instruction for lifelong learners.

Selected Unsolved Problems in Coding Theory (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): David Joyner, Jon-Lark Kim Selected Unsolved Problems in Coding Theory (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
David Joyner, Jon-Lark Kim
R1,517 Discovery Miles 15 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Using an original mode of presentation, and emphasizing the computational nature of the subject, this book explores a number of the unsolved problems that still exist in coding theory. A well-established and highly relevant branch of mathematics, the theory of error-correcting codes is concerned with reliably transmitting data over a noisy channel. Despite frequent use in a range of contexts, the subject still contains interesting unsolved problems that have resisted solution by some of the most prominent mathematicians of recent decades.

Employing Sage a free open-source mathematics software system to illustrate ideas, this book is intended for graduate students and researchers in algebraic coding theory. The work may be used as supplementary reading material in a graduate course on coding theory or for self-study.

David Joyner
R2,645 Discovery Miles 26 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The National Security Agency funded a conference on Coding theory, Cryp- tography, and Number Theory (nick-named Cryptoday) at the United States Naval Academy, on October 25-27, 1998. We were very fortunate to have been able to attract talented mathematicians and cryptographers to the meeting. Unfortunately, some people couldn't make it for either scheduling or funding reasons. Some of these have been invited to contribute a paper anyway. In addition, Prof. William Tutte and Frode Weierud have been kind enough to allow the inclusion of some very interesting unpublished papers of theirs. The papers basically fall into three catagories. Historical papers on cryp- tography done during World War II (Hatch, Hilton, Tutte, Ulfving, and Weierud), mathematical papers on more recent methods in cryptography (Cosgrave, Lomonoco, Wardlaw), and mathematical papers in coding theory (Gao, Joyner, Michael, Shokranian, Shokrollahi). A brief biography of the authors follows. - Peter Hilton is a Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He worked from 1941 to 1945 in the British cryptanalytic headquarters at Bletchley Park. Profes- sor Hilton has done extensive research in algebraic topology and group theory. - William Tutte is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus and an Adjunct Pro- fessor in the Combinatorics and Optimization Department at the Univer- sity of Waterloo. He worked from 1941 to 1945 in the British cryptana- lytic headquarters at Bletchley Park. Professor Tutte has done extensive research in the field of combinatorics.

Adventures in Group Theory - Rubik's Cube, Merlin's Machine, and Other Mathematical Toys (Paperback, second edition):... Adventures in Group Theory - Rubik's Cube, Merlin's Machine, and Other Mathematical Toys (Paperback, second edition)
David Joyner
R868 Discovery Miles 8 680 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This updated and revised edition of David Joyner's entertaining "hands-on" tour of group theory and abstract algebra brings life, levity, and practicality to the topics through mathematical toys.

Joyner uses permutation puzzles such as the Rubik's Cube and its variants, the 15 puzzle, the Rainbow Masterball, Merlin's Machine, the Pyraminx, and the Skewb to explain the basics of introductory algebra and group theory. Subjects covered include the Cayley graphs, symmetries, isomorphisms, wreath products, free groups, and finite fields of group theory, as well as algebraic matrices, combinatorics, and permutations.

Featuring strategies for solving the puzzles and computations illustrated using the SAGE open-source computer algebra system, the second edition of "Adventures in Group Theory" is perfect for mathematics enthusiasts and for use as a supplementary textbook.

Adventures in Graph Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017): W. David Joyner, Caroline Grant Melles Adventures in Graph Theory (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
W. David Joyner, Caroline Grant Melles
R1,764 Discovery Miles 17 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This textbook acts as a pathway to higher mathematics by seeking and illuminating the connections between graph theory and diverse fields of mathematics, such as calculus on manifolds, group theory, algebraic curves, Fourier analysis, cryptography and other areas of combinatorics. An overview of graph theory definitions and polynomial invariants for graphs prepares the reader for the subsequent dive into the applications of graph theory. To pique the reader's interest in areas of possible exploration, recent results in mathematics appear throughout the book, accompanied with examples of related graphs, how they arise, and what their valuable uses are. The consequences of graph theory covered by the authors are complicated and far-reaching, so topics are always exhibited in a user-friendly manner with copious graphs, exercises, and Sage code for the computation of equations. Samples of the book's source code can be found at github.com/springer-math/adventures-in-graph-theory. The text is geared towards advanced undergraduate and graduate students and is particularly useful for those trying to decide what type of problem to tackle for their dissertation. This book can also serve as a reference for anyone interested in exploring how they can apply graph theory to other parts of mathematics.
