This book examines the migration of older persons to rural
retirement destinations in the United States. While the majority of
older persons are residentially stable, those who migrate are
disproportionately likely to move to a rural community. Moreover,
with the aging of the baby boom generation, particular rural
communities can expect to continue attracting older in-migrants in
the future. The book examines rural retirement migration from the
older in-migrants' perspective and from the vantage point of the
destination communities to which they move. This integrated
micro-macro approach permits the authors to view older in-migrants
as embedded in particular types of environments that facilitate
and/or constrain their opportunities for productive living during
older age. It also permits the examination of positive and negative
effects of older in-migration for destination communities.

Safari 101 is written for the hunter that has always considered
Africa out of reach, someone who has a spark of desire just waiting
to be fanned into a flame. The myths of being "too expensive" and
"too difficult" are firmly entrenched in many hunters' minds.
Safari 101 has forty-six hints dispersed throughout 11 chapters and
proves these myths false. Personal stories are used to illustrate
the value of each hint and to make each one easy to remember. When
Brown took his first Safari, he was forced to rely on word of mouth
for information, as all of the books he found were for photo
Safaris. This book takes Brown's experiences, and what he learned
from professional hunters and outfitters, and puts the information
in a logical progression that is entertaining as well as
informative. The book will help fan the spark into a flame.
This book examines the transformations of rural society and economy
in the UK and US during the last half-century, and explores the
significance of these trends and changes for community
sustainability, quality of life and the environment. While both the
UK and US are highly urbanised, rural people and communities
continue to contribute to national identity, economic development
and social solidarity, as well as to environmental quality.
Contributors explore the degree to which rural people exhibit
agency and autonomy, rather than being merely passive in the face
of exogenous forces of change in a globalised world. They also
illuminate very different policy approaches to rural policy in two
advanced capitalist societies often thought to be similar, and show
how fundamental differences in rural policy approaches of the US
and the UK are based on different social ideologies and values that
shape policies relating to rural areas. This book will help to
stimulate transatlantic dialogue on rural scholarship and rural
policy analysis, while also contributing to theory and policy
development. It will be of interest to researchers, students and
everyone involved in the policy and practice of rural development.
This book contains the latest research on social and economic
trends occurring in rural America. Conducted by an
interdisciplinary and regionally diverse group of social
scientists, this original research highlights four major themes
transforming contemporary rural areas: population composition
change; industrial restructuring and changing livelihoods; changing
patterns of rural land use; and areas of persistent disadvantage
and emerging opportunity. Each theme is examined with an expanded
overview and geographically varied case studies. This volume is the
first scholarly assessment exclusively focused on rural demographic
trends that exploits data from Census 2000. It contributes to
knowledge of the interdependency between population change and
rural society, and it provides an empirical context for considering
policy choices.
