Ideologies in Action - Morphological Adaptation and Political Ideas (Hardcover): Mathew Humphrey, David Laycock, Maiken Umbach Ideologies in Action - Morphological Adaptation and Political Ideas (Hardcover)

Ideologies in Action: Morphological Adaptation and Political Ideas explores how political ideas move across geographical, social and chronological boundaries. Focusing on North American and European case studies ranging from populist tax revolts through parenting advice manuals to online learning environments, the contributors propose new methods for understanding how political entrepreneurs, intellectuals and ordinary citizens deploy and redefine ideologies. All of these groups are consumers of ideology, drawing on pre-existing, transnational ideological concepts and narratives in order to make sense of the world. They are also all producers of ideology, adapting and reconfiguring ideological material to support their own political aims, desires and policy objectives. In doing so, they combine common conceptual elements - interpretations of freedom, order, national identity, democracy, community or equality - with sentiments and imaginations deeply embedded in cultural and social practice. To render these ideological practices intelligible, the contributors to this volume blend conceptual morphology, which emphasizes how meaning emerges in and through connections between political ideas, with close readings of the vernacular and experiential dimensions of ideologies in action. This book offers new insights into how ideologies in varied social and political settings can be decoded, and challenges hierarchical distinctions between ideological 'producers' and 'consumers'. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Political Ideologies.

Regulating Next Generation Agri-Food Biotechnologies - Lessons from European, North American and Asian Experiences (Hardcover):... Regulating Next Generation Agri-Food Biotechnologies - Lessons from European, North American and Asian Experiences (Hardcover)
Michael Howlett, David Laycock
R4,279 Discovery Miles 42 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Agri-food bio-technology policy and regulation is transitioning from an early period focused on genetic engineering technologies to 'next-generation' rules and regulatory processes linked to challenges originating in a wide variety of new technological processes and applications. Can lessons learned from past and current regulatory oversights of agricultural biotechnology - and other high-technology sectors - help us address new and emerging regulatory challenges in the agri-food genetics sector? The expert contributors in this volume discuss the experiences of a wide range of North American, European and Asian countries with high technology regulation to address four key questions related to the past and future development of agri-food genomics regulation across the globe. how unique is agri-food biotechology regulation, and how can it be evaluated using the existing tools of regulatory analysis developed in examinations of other sectors? is a 'government to governance' model of regulatory regime development found in many other sectors relevant in this rapidly evolving sphere of activity? is a stages model of regulatory regime development accurate? And, if so, at which stage are we currently positioned in the regulation of agri-food genomics products and technologies? what drives movement between stages in different countries and sectors? In assessing such drivers, what are the key links between sectoral (meso) developments and more general macro and micro developments such as international relations and administrative behaviour? By updating, extending and challenging earlier empirical and theoretical social science perspectives on agricultural bio-technological regulation, this volume helps to inform future policy formulation. It will be of interest to practitioners and students of biotechnology, agriculture, and science and technology policy, and regulatory processes more generally.

Ideology is a ubiquitous, continuously innovating dimension of human experience, but its character and impact are notoriously difficult to pinpoint within political and social life. Political Ideology in Parties, Policy, and Civil Society demonstrates that the reach and significance of political ideology can be most effectively understood by employing a multidisciplinary approach. Offering analyses that are simultaneously empirical and interpretive - in fields as diverse as development assistance policy and game theory - the contributors to this volume reveal ideology's penetration in varied spheres, including government activity, party competition, agricultural and working-class communities, and academic life.

Populism and the Mirror of Democracy (Paperback, New): Francisco Panizza Populism and the Mirror of Democracy (Paperback, New)
Francisco Panizza; Contributions by Benjamin Arditi, Chantal Mouffe, David Howarth, David Laycock, …

Populism raises awkward question about modern forms of democracy. It often represents the ugly face of the people. It is neither the highest form of democracy nor its enemy. It is, rather, a mirror in which democracy may contemplate itself, warts and all, in a discovery of itself and what it lacks. This definitive collection, edited by one of the world's pre-eminent authorities on populism, Francisco Panizza, combines theoretical essays with a number of specially commissioned case studies on populist politics in the US, Britain, Canada, eastern Europe, Palestine, Latin America and South Africa. A broadly shared understanding of the nature of populism gives the book a coherence rarely found in collective works and enhances the richness of the case studies.

Reviving Social Democracy - The Near Death and Surprising Rise of the Federal NDP (Hardcover): David Laycock, Lynda Erickson Reviving Social Democracy - The Near Death and Surprising Rise of the Federal NDP (Hardcover)
David Laycock, Lynda Erickson
R2,093 Discovery Miles 20 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 2011, the NDP stunned political pundits by becoming the Official Opposition in the House of Commons. After near collapse in the 1993 election, how did the NDP manage to win triple the seats of its Liberal rivals and take more than three-quarters of the ridings in Quebec? This book examines the federal NDP's transformation from "nearly dead party" to new power player within a volatile party system. Its early chapters - on the party's emergence in the 1960s, its presence in Quebec, and the Jack Layton factor - pave the way for insightful analyses of issues such as party modernization, changing ideology, voter profile, and policy formation that played a significant role in driving the "Orange Crush" phenomenon.

Policy Analysis in Canada (Paperback): Laurent Dobuzinskis, Michael Howlett, David Laycock Policy Analysis in Canada (Paperback)

The growth of what some academics refer to as 'the policy analysis movement' represents an effort to reform certain aspects of government behaviour. The policy analysis movement is the result of efforts made by actors inside and outside formal political decision-making processes to improve policy outcomes by applying systematic evaluative rationality to the development and implementation of policy options. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of the many ways in which the policy analysis movement has been conducted, and to what effect, in Canadian governments and, for the first time, in business associations, labour unions, universities, and other non-governmental organizations.

Editors Laurent Dobuzinskis, Michael Howlett, and David Laycock have brought together a wide range of contributors to address questions such as: What do policy analysts do? What techniques and approaches do they use? What is their influence on policy-making in Canada? Is there a policy analysis deficit? What norms and values guide the work done by policy analysts working in different institutional settings? Contributors focus on the sociology of policy analysis, demonstrating how analysts working in different organizations tend to have different interests and to utilize different techniques. They compare and analyze the significance of these different styles and approaches, and speculate about their impact on the policy process.

Representation and Democratic Theory (Hardcover): David Laycock Representation and Democratic Theory (Hardcover)
David Laycock
R2,207 Discovery Miles 22 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With public confidence in representative institutions dropping to distressing levels, it is time for political theorists to turn their attention to representation, and to reconceive its normative foundations and connections to other aspects of a revived public life. With contributions from Canada's leading democratic theorists, this volume investigates theoretical and practical aspects of innovative political representation in the early 21st century. Some authors tackle problematic dimensions of representation head on, while others explore democratic participation and deliberation, multicultural pluralism, contested citizenship, and other background conditions of contemporary representation. Still others consider the challenges posed to representation by national minorities, national boundaries, multinational and federal governance, and cultural and social obstacles to either individual or group autonomy. the beginning of the 21st century, and demonstrates how normatively addressing the problem of representation crystallizes and illuminates debates over the nature of justice, equality, citizenship and deliberation in contemporary democratic politics. A crucial supplement to empirical studies of conventional political representation, Representation and Democratic Theory offers a timely and thought-provoking contribution to contemporary democratic theory. It will be a necessary and welcome addition to the libraries of a wide range of political and social scientists. A thought-provoking collection of essays by leading political theorists that illuminates the complexity of political representation in contemporary democratic politics.
