This fascinating story begins with post-World War Two sales of surplus Mustangs to various foreign governments and a few civilian customers. More than a decade later, in 1957 and 1958, the US Air Force auctioned off its remaining inventory of P-51s. These Mustangs became high-speed executive transports in the days before the introduction of the LearJet and other corporate aircraft. Soon after, in the mid-1960s and early 1970s, as the warbird movement was gaining traction, many of the remaining Mustangs came onto the civilian market. Today, these warbirds are the stars of airshows around the world. The effort to restore them to as close to their original wartime condition as possible has reached new levels of authenticity. With over 140 images, accompanied by service histories, this book shows the fighters where they should be seen - in the air.
This volume is just what any pastor needs when looking for something special to spice up a Sunday sermon - it's full of imaginative and inspirational meditations that breathe new life into scripture texts from Cycle C of the Revised Common Lectionary. Leininger gives readers a new perspective on a passage from each week's assigned readings with a thought-provoking reflection that puts in the context of modern life. This is much more than just a source of stimulating sermon illustrations - it's also a treasure chest of devotional reading that will make any reader pause and reflect on God's wonderful hand at work in our daily activities. It's a must-have resource for any church library. Some of the intriguing chapters are: [ The Speed Bump on the Road to Bethlehem [ Silly Goose [ Love Your Enemy? Are You Kidding, Lord? [ Sonny Moneybags [ The Judas Gene [ The Forgiveness Business [ Trouble in the Parsonage [ Pax Christi or Pox Christi? [ The Locust Years ...and many more! David E. Leininger had planned be a "pastor out to pasture" and retire from active ministry at the end of 2008, but God had other plans. Instead of chasing little white balls around a proverbial pasture, he is now the interim pastor of Dorchester Presbyterian Church in Summerville, South Carolina. He has previously served congregations in Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. A graduate of Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (M.Div) and Erskine Theological Seminary (D.Min.), Leininger is the author of six books: A Color-Blind Church; God of Justice: A Look at the Ten Commandments in the 21st Century; As We Believe, So We Behave: Living the Apostles' Creed; and three volumes of Lectionary Tales for the Pulpit. He has also been a contributing writer for the online services StoryShare and The Immediate Word (www.sermonsuite.com).
When it comes to our faith, what exactly do we believe? ManyChristians might be hard-pressed to give a coherent answer to that question... atleast on their own. Yet we do clearlyarticulate our faith week in and week out during worship as we repeat thefamiliar affirmations in the Apostles' Creed. And we not only give voice tothese statements, we also live them - since belief and behavior areinextricably linked, even if we are not always aware of it. For example, if webelieve that we will be burned when we touch a hot iron, then we will avoidtouching it. What we believe determineshow we behave. If we truly believe the creed, how does that affect ourbehavior? If we truly believe in "one God, the Father almighty" or in "JesusChrist, his only Son, our Lord," how do our lives reflect that belief? As WeBelieve, So We Behave examines each tenet of the Apostles' Creed andilluminates how it affects what we say and do on a daily basis. Leiningerdemonstrates that the faith statements embedded in the creed are not drycollections of ancient words mumbled quietly every Sunday. Rather, they arevibrant and vital elements in our walk with God, impacting every aspect of ourlives. David E. Leiningeris the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Warren, Pennsylvania. He has alsoserved congregations in North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Priorto entering the ministry, Leininger had a successful career for almost twodecades in radio and television. He is the author of God of Justice, A Color-BlindChurch, and two volumes of LectionaryTales for the Pulpit (for Cycles A and B), and his sermons have appeared inthe Best Sermons 4 anthology(HarperCollins). Leininger has also been a contributing writer for the onlineservices StoryShare and The Immediate Word (www.sermonsuite.com).
