Arthurian Poets - Charles Williams (Hardcover): David Llewellyn Dodds Arthurian Poets - Charles Williams (Hardcover)
David Llewellyn Dodds
R2,332 Discovery Miles 23 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

I believe this volume will give to scholars of Williams expanded vistas from which to view his work, and to the general reader glimpses of Camelot'. MYTHPRINT Includes Taliessin through Logres and The Region of the Summer Stars - complex and haunting works which constitute the major imaginative writings about the Grail this century in addition to much previously unpublished material. Charles Williams's two cycles of poems, Taliessin through Logres and The Region of the Summer Stars, constitute the major imaginative work about the Grail of the 20th century. Williams's vision of spiritual reality is expressed throughsymbols of great originality, and the complex patterns of sound and haunting rhythms make his poems deeply rewarding. In this new edition David Dodds collects together for the first time twenty-four of Williams's earlier poems on Arthurian themes, many never published before. They are from Williams's collection The Advent of Galahad, which both grew into and gave way to the Taliessincycle. There are also later poems showing this transmutation in process, and fragments, designed to form a sequel to The Region of the Summer Stars, which appear for the first time.Besides the publication of this important new material, the present edition will serve to introduce new readers to the magic of these rich and lyrical pieces, which evoke a spiritual world in keeping with the highest ideals of Arthurian literature.CODE>DAVID LLEWELLYN DODDS, A.M., /CODE> of Merton College, was a Rhodes Scholar and Richard Weaver Fellow. Arthurian Poets: John Masefield (Paperback): David Llewellyn Dodds Arthurian Poets: John Masefield (Paperback)
David Llewellyn Dodds
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Collected edition of Masefield's Arthurian poetry including previously unpublished material. Introduction by the author. At the end of the nineteenth century, a homeless runaway teenager in New York found a job in a bar and discovered Malory. So began the lifelong interest of the future Poet Laureate, John Masefield (1878-1967), in the story of KingArthur. After becoming a popular, successful narrative poet and playwright, Masefield turned to the Arthurian material in earnest, producing the verse drama Tristan and Isolt in 1927 and Midsummer Night a year laterwith its Arthurian cycle. All29 of Masefield's previously published Arthurian poems from the Ballad of Sir Bors (1903) to Caer Ocvran (1966) are collected here in addition to the full-length tragi-comedy When Good King Arthur. Also included are nine poems never before published which, together with prose notes, reveal Masefield undertaking an ambitious retelling of the Arthurian myth.
