The third edition of this concise, popular textbook on elementary
differential equations gives instructors an alternative to the many
voluminous texts on the market. It presents a thorough treatment of
the standard topics in an accessible, easy-to-read, format. The
overarching perspective of the text conveys that differential
equations are about applications. This book illuminates the
mathematical theory in the text with a wide variety of applications
that will appeal to students in physics, engineering, the
biosciences, economics and mathematics. Instructors are likely to
find that the first four or five chapters are suitable for a first
course in the subject. This edition contains a healthy increase
over earlier editions in the number of worked examples and
exercises, particularly those routine in nature. Two appendices
include a review with practice problems, and a MATLAB (R)
supplement that gives basic codes and commands for solving
differential equations. MATLAB (R) is not required; students are
encouraged to utilize available software to plot many of their
solutions. Solutions to even-numbered problems are available on
springer.com.
This textbook is for the standard, one-semester, junior-senior
course that often goes by the title "Elementary Partial
Differential Equations" or "Boundary Value Problems". The audience
consists of students in mathematics, engineering, and the sciences.
The topics include derivations of some of the standard models of
mathematical physics and methods for solving those equations on
unbounded and bounded domains, and applications of PDE's to
biology. The text differs from other texts in its brevity; yet it
provides coverage of the main topics usually studied in the
standard course, as well as an introduction to using computer
algebra packages to solve and understand partial differential
equations. For the 3rd edition the section on numerical methods has
been considerably expanded to reflect their central role in PDE's.
A treatment of the finite element method has been included and the
code for numerical calculations is now written for MATLAB.
Nonetheless the brevity of the text has been maintained. To further
aid the reader in mastering the material and using the book, the
clarity of the exercises has been improved, more routine exercises
have been included, and the entire text has been visually
reformatted to improve readability.
This textbook develops the basic ideas of transport models in
hydrogeology, including diffusion-dispersion processes, advection,
and adsorption or reaction. The book serves as an excellent text or
supplementary reading in courses in applied mathematics,
contaminant hydrology, ground water modeling, or hydrogeology.
Therearemanyexcellenttextsonelementarydi?erentialequationsdesignedfor
the standard sophomore course. However, in spite of the fact that
most courses are one semester in length, the texts have evolved
into calculus-like pres- tations that include a large collection of
methods and applications, packaged with student manuals, and
Web-based notes, projects, and supplements. All of this comes in
several hundred pages of text with busy formats. Most students do
not have the time or desire to read voluminous texts and explore
internet supplements. The format of this di?erential equations book
is di?erent; it is a one-semester, brief treatment of the basic
ideas, models, and solution methods.

book. I have tried to write concisely, to the point, and in plain
language. Many worked examples and exercises are included. A
student who works through this primer will have the tools to go to
the next level in applying di?erential eq- tions to problems in
engineering, science, and applied mathematics. It can give some
instructors, who want more concise coverage, an alternative to
existing texts.
Junk has jumped through space and time to find his sister Ambeline.
She has been taken to a country ruled by the nine emperors. Junk
and his friends Garvan and Lasel set off to find her. On his quest,
Junk will fight off lions, morph into a cyborg, discover the secret
of the universe, and play with time itself. Join Junk on an
adventure full of humour and heart-pounding action.
On the eve of Granny Hazel's burial in the back garden, a stranger
in his time machine - a machine that bears an uncanny resemblance
to a Morris Minor - visits five year-old Edward with a strange
request. And Edward agrees to be his friend. But Edward is not
alone in the world. His twin sister Sophia is about to bring future
tragedy upon herself through an all-too-literal misunderstanding of
a promise she's made to their father. So while Sophia stays at
home, seemingly condemned to spend the rest of her days in The
Manse - a world untouched by modern trappings - Edward is sent to
boarding school. There he encounters the kind and the not-so-kind,
and meets the strangest child. His name is Alf, and Alf is a boy
whose very existence would seem to hint at universes of unlimited
possibilities...and who might one day help Edward liberate Sophia.
With its Gothic backdrop, Half-Sick of Shadows is a novel of many
parts: at once a comical tragedy, a dark and dazzlingly told tale
of childhood wonder and dismay, of familial dysfunction, of poetry,
the imagination and theoretical physics.
Since running away from home at the age of 13, Junk has jumped
through space and time to find his sister Ambeline ... Or has he?
When Junk wakes up to find himself locked in a high security
facility, he starts to question everything he believed to be true.
But there is one thing he is sure of: he didn't kill his sister,
and he needs to find her. In this high-octane finale to the League
of Sharks trilogy, Junk and his friends find themselves battling
more than just the odds. They're running out of time. A nightmarish
countdown has begun.
This book develops the basic ideas of transport models in hydrogeology, including diffusion-dispersion processes, advection, and adsorption or reaction. While balancing the mathematical and physical concepts, it is written in a scientific pedagogical style that is accessible to graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, the geosciences, civil engineering, and other environmental sciences. The book is organized into six chapters that focus on the diffusion equation, the transport of contaminants and other solutes through porous media, the existence of traveling wave fronts in such systems, filtration theory, the kinematics and dynamics of ground water transport, and the flow and reactions in permeable rocks. Analytic methods for both elementary linear and nonlinear partial differential equations are discussed in detail. Appendices develop numerical methods for partial differential equations, including the method of lines and finite difference methods, and numerical methods for inverting Laplace transforms. Exercises are interspersed throughout the book and over one hundred and twenty references are cited. The book serves as an excellent text or supplementary reading in courses in applied mathematics, contaminant hydrology, ground water modeling, or hydrogeology.

Private companies and multinationals have been around since the
beginning of recorded history. For both good and ill they have done
an immense amount to shape human culture around the world. We have
just come through a period in history when communist and socialist
societies tried to eliminate or severely constrain private
enterprise, but companies are now back, big time. Consequently, the
question now is: `What is their role in our global economic and
social system?' Providing goods and services and making a profit
for their shareholders are important, but in that process, they
also have responsibilities to their stakeholders and the wider
society. Companies are in fact corporate citizens of society; just
as individuals are private citizens. They exercise certain rights
but also have profound responsibilities. They have to step up as
good citizens and use their power and influence to help humanity
face the challenges of the future. This book discusses why and how
they must do that as a step towards learning to live with modern
capitalism.
