For hundreds of years, the biblical story of the Curse of Ham was
marshalled as a justification of serfdom, slavery and human
bondage. According to the myth, having seen his father Noah naked,
Ham's is cursed to have his descendants be forever slaves. In this
new book the Curse of Ham is explored in its Reformation context,
revealing how it became the cornerstone of the Christian defence of
slavery and the slave trade for the next four hundred years. It
shows how broader medieval interpretations of the story became
marginalized in the early modern period as writers such as Annius
of Viterbo and George Best began to weave the legend of Ham into
their own books, expanding and adding to the legend in ways that
established a firm connection between Ham, Africa, slavery and
race. For although in the original biblical text Ham himself is not
cursed and race is never mentioned, these writers helped develop
the story of Ham into an ideological and theological defence for
African slavery, at the precise time that the Transatlantic Slave
Trade began to establish itself as a major part of the European
economy during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Skilfully
weaving together elements of theology, literature and history, this
book provides a fascinating insight into the ways that issues of
religion, economics and race could collide in the Reformation
world. It will prove essential reading, not only for those with an
interest in early modern history, but for anyone wishing to try to
comprehend the origins of arguments used to justify slavery and
segregation right up to the 1960s.

Martin Luther remains a popular, oft-quoted, referenced, lauded
historical figure. He is often seen as the fulcrum upon which the
medieval turned into the modern, the last great medieval or the
first great modern; or, he is the Protestant hero, the virulent
anti-Semite; the destroyer of Catholic decadence, or the betrayer
of the peasant cause. An important but contested figure, he was all
of these things. Understanding Luther's context helps us to
comprehend how a single man could be so many seemingly
contradictory things simultaneously. Martin Luther in Context
explores the world around Luther in order to make the man and the
Reformation movement more understandable. Written by an
international team of leading scholars, it includes over forty
short, accessible essays, all specially commissioned for this
volume, which reconstruct the life and world of Martin Luther. The
volume also contextualizes the scholarship and reception of Luther
in the popular mind.
This title presents the European Reformation as seen through the
life of an important but little-known participant-Philipp of Hesse,
a nobleman who became a Reformation leader in Germany. The
Reformation was the most cataclysmic event in Western Christianity.
An ideal resource for undergraduate history students and general
readers, this title provides an accessible human narrative through
the complex events of the period that many find bewildering.
History comes alive and events unfold through the eyes of Philipp
of Hesse, a German nobleman who ascended to becoming a key
Reformation leader. The book begins with a detailed survey of the
Holy Roman Empire at the turn of the 16th century and provides
chronological coverage of Philipp's life and role in the
Reformation through to after his death in 1567, after which
Calvinism rose within the empire. The chapters document how Philipp
of Hesse knew every major figure of the German Reformation;
participated in every major Reformation-era imperial diet; was
present at every important event in the Lutheran-dominated,
foundational period of 1521 to 1555; and became a leading Lutheran
prince in the Holy Roman Empire. Additionally, the work thoroughly
documents the connections between religion, politics, and society
and explains the important role of the German nobility in the
development of the Reformation. Provides a fresh approach to a
curricular staple topic that is critical to the understanding of
early modern history, the history of religion, and the current
state of Christianity Enables readers to understand how the events
of the Reformation unfolded by viewing the events through the
perspective of one man central to the cause and demonstrating how
certain individuals' convictions led to the theology that followed
This is an upper-level introduction to the German Reformer Martin
Luther, who by his thought and action started the Reformation
movement. Martin Luther was one of the most influential and
important figures of the second millennium. His break with Rome and
the development of separate Evangelical churches affected not just
the religious life of Europe but also social and political
landscapes as well. More books have been written about Luther than
nearly any other historical figure. Despite all these books, Luther
remains an enigmatic figure. This book proposes to examine a number
of key moments in Luther's life and fundamental theological
positions that remain perplexing to most students. This book will
also present an introduction to the primary sources available to a
student and important secondary works that ought to be consulted.
Continuum's Guides for the Perplexed are clear, concise and
accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that
students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed
downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is
that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and
explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough
understanding of demanding material.
