The two Voyager encounters with Jupiter were periods unparalleled
in degree and diversity of discovery. We had, or course, expected a
number of discoveries because we had never before been able to
study in detail the atmospheric motions on a planet that is a giant
spinning sphere of hydrogen and helium, nor had we ever observed
planet-sized objects such as the Jovian satellites Ganymedes and
Callisto, which are half water-ice. We had never been so close to a
Moon-sized satellite such as lo, which was known to be dispersing
sodium throughout its Jovian neighborhood and was thought to be
generating a one-million-ampere electrical current that in some way
results in billions of watts of radio emission from Jupiter.
This book has been described as, humorous, inspirational, and at
times thought provoking. Francis, a non-denominational clergy
person and his Gaurdian Angel, Sidekick, share their world with
you. This world is colored by the 12 step philosophy. It is also a
world where Francis is "human" and just trying to figure things
out. Issues like dealing with his mother, a wise cracking Angel,
and trying to keep his nephew Tom on the straight and narrow are
just a few things that keep poor Francis on his toes! Thrown in
between are some interesting quotes, word definitions and Francis'
Rules For Life.
During the Six Day War, Israel recaptured Gush Etzion, after it was
in the hands of the Arabs since 1948. At the time, Moshe Moscovic,
a charismatic and devoted Zionist leader, predicted that the Gush
will transform into a center of Jewish learning. Less than forty
years later, the reality has surpassed the dream. The Gush Etzion
region has been transformed into the capital of modern religious
Zionism. Its yeshivot are headed by such Torah luminaries as RAV
YEHUDA AMITAL, RAV AARON LICHTENSTEIN, and RAV SHLOMO RISKIN.
Graduates of yeshivot from Gush Etzion make up a disproportionately
high percentage of fighting men in the elite units of the Israeli
Defense Forces. WHAT compelled these leaders of Torah to leave much
more comfortable surroundings in order to settle the Judean Hills?
HOW did this region become the center of Torah study that it is
today? THE GUSH is the story of these inspiring historical
developments.
