War Doctor - Surgery on the Front Line (Paperback): David Nott War Doctor - Surgery on the Front Line (Paperback)
David Nott 1
R535 R432 Discovery Miles 4 320 Save R103 (19%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For more than twenty-five years, David Nott has taken unpaid leave from his job as a general and vascular surgeon with the NHS to volunteer in some of the world’s most dangerous war zones. From Sarajevo under siege in 1993, to clandestine hospitals in rebel-held eastern Aleppo, he has carried out life-saving operations and field surgery in the most challenging conditions, and with none of the resources of a major London teaching hospital.

The conflicts he has worked in form a chronology of twenty-first-century combat: Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur, Congo, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Gaza and Syria. But he has also volunteered in areas blighted by natural disasters, such as the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal.

Driven both by compassion and passion, the desire to help others and the thrill of extreme personal danger, he is now widely acknowledged to be the most experienced trauma surgeon in the world. But as time has gone on, David Nott began to realize that flying into to a catastrophe - whether war or natural disaster – was not enough. Doctors on the ground needed to learn how to treat the appalling injuries that war inflicts upon its victims. Since 2015, the Foundation he set up with his wife, Elly, has disseminated the knowledge he has gained, training other doctors in the art of saving lives threatened by bombs and bullets.

War Doctor is his extraordinary story.

Flexible Bayesian Regression Modelling (Paperback): Yanan Fan, David Nott, Mike Smith, Jean-Luc Dortet-Bernadet Flexible Bayesian Regression Modelling (Paperback)
Yanan Fan, David Nott, Mike Smith, Jean-Luc Dortet-Bernadet
R2,576 Discovery Miles 25 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Flexible Bayesian Regression Modeling is a step-by-step guide to the Bayesian revolution in regression modeling, for use in advanced econometric and statistical analysis where datasets are characterized by complexity, multiplicity, and large sample sizes, necessitating the need for considerable flexibility in modeling techniques. It reviews three forms of flexibility: methods which provide flexibility in their error distribution; methods which model non-central parts of the distribution (such as quantile regression); and finally models that allow the mean function to be flexible (such as spline models). Each chapter discusses the key aspects of fitting a regression model. R programs accompany the methods. This book is particularly relevant to non-specialist practitioners with intermediate mathematical training seeking to apply Bayesian approaches in economics, biology, finance, engineering and medicine.

Disaster Medicine - A Case Based Approach (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): David MacGarty, David Nott Disaster Medicine - A Case Based Approach (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
David MacGarty, David Nott
R5,167 Discovery Miles 51 670 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Whether switching on the TV, picking up a newspaper or simply logging on to the internet, one is constantly faced with images of natural disasters, conflict and human suffering. Humanity has experienced these problems throughout time and we have evolved methods and mechanisms for alleviating suffering, from trauma care following a traffic accident to international pacts and the Millennium Development Goals. In exploring such diverse cases of aid intervention, Disaster Medicine: A Case Based Approach provides interesting, easily accessible content and context for understanding disaster medicine and global health. In each case the reader will be put in the position of the decision maker and as in real life some of the cases will portray success and some will show failure. It is hoped the reader will consider the issues and problems for themselves and perhaps consider things they would choose to do differently. Written by a team of experts with extensive experience in the field and a progressive perspective Disaster Medicine: A Case Based Approach is a valuable text for students and professionals of disaster medicine.

R1,283 Discovery Miles 12 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A story of ambition and failure, "325,000 Francs "is remarkable for its dramatic construction, vivid characterization and clear, economical style. Psychological interest centers on the relationship between the characters of Bernard and Marie-Jeanne, but they are also shown in their social setting. The presence of an observer-narrator involves the reader in a challenging way, while leaving open the interpretation of a novel which, in Vailland's words has, "toutes les faces possibles de la realite."
