Biopolitics, Militarism, and Development - Eritrea in the Twenty-First Century (Paperback): David O'Kane, Tricia Redeker... Biopolitics, Militarism, and Development - Eritrea in the Twenty-First Century (Paperback)
David O'Kane, Tricia Redeker Hepner
R862 Discovery Miles 8 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"This volume offers significant and new information on and insights into current developments in many different areas and - thanks to a comprehensive bibliography on Eritrea and theoretical foundations of the concept of biopolitics as an appendix - inspirations for further general readings and reflections in the field of political.science." . Peripherie

Bringing together original, contemporary ethnographic research on the Northeast African state of Eritrea, this book shows how biopolitics - the state-led deployment of disciplinary technologies on individuals and population groups - is assuming particular forms in the twenty-first century. Once hailed as the "African country that works," Eritrea's apparently successful post-independence development has since lapsed into economic crisis and severe human rights violations. This is due not only to the border war with Ethiopia that began in 1998, but is also the result of discernible tendencies in the "high modernist" style of social mobilization for development first adopted by the Eritrean government during the liberation struggle (1961-1991) and later carried into the post-independence era. The contributions to this volume reveal and interpret the links between development and developmentalist ideologies, intensifying militarism, and the controlling and disciplining of human lives and bodies by state institutions, policies, and discourses. Also assessed are the multiple consequences of these policies for the Eritrean people and the ways in which such policies are resisted or subverted. This insightful, comparative volume places the Eritrean case in a broader global and transnational context."

The Palgrave Handbook of Blue Heritage (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Rosabelle Boswell, David O'Kane, Jeremy Hills The Palgrave Handbook of Blue Heritage (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Rosabelle Boswell, David O'Kane, Jeremy Hills
R6,625 Discovery Miles 66 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook is unique in its consideration of social and cultural contributions to sustainable oceans management. It is also unique in its deconstruction of the hegemonic value attached to the oceans and in its analysis of discourses regarding what national governments in the Global South should prioritise in their oceans management strategy. Offering a historical perspective from the start, the handbook reflects on the confluence of (western) scientific discourse and colonialism, and the impact of this on indigenous conceptions of the oceans and on social identity. With regard to the latter, the authors are mindful of the nationalisation of island territories worldwide and the impact of this process on regional collaboration, cultural exchange and the valuation of the oceans. Focusing on global examples, the handbook offers a nuanced, region relevant, contemporary conceptualisation of blue heritage, discussing what will be required to achieve an inclusive oceans economy by 2063, the end goal date of the African Union's Agenda 2063. The analysis will be useful to established academics in the field of ocean studies, policymakers and practitioners engaged in research on the ocean economy, as well as graduate scholars in the ocean sciences.

Middle Classes in Africa - Changing Lives and Conceptual Challenges (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Middle Classes in Africa - Changing Lives and Conceptual Challenges (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Lena Kroeker, David O'Kane, Tabea Scharrer
R2,969 Discovery Miles 29 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume challenges the concept of the 'new African middle class' with new theoretical and empirical insights into the changing lives in Sub-Saharan Africa. Diverse middle classes are on the rise, but models of class based on experiences from other regions of the world cannot be easily transferred to the African continent. Empirical contributions, drawn from a diverse range of contexts, address both African histories of class formation and the political roles of the continent's middle classes, and also examine the important interdependencies that cut across inter-generational, urban-rural and class divides. This thought-provoking book argues emphatically for a revision of common notions of the 'middle class', and for the inclusion of insights 'from the South' into the global debate on class. Middle Classes in Africa will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, as well as NGOs and policy makers with an interest in African societies.
