Provenance Research in Book History - A Handbook (Hardcover, New edition): David Pearson Provenance Research in Book History - A Handbook (Hardcover, New edition)
David Pearson
R1,682 Discovery Miles 16 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since this handbook was first published in 1994, interest in the book as a material object, and in the ways in which books have been owned, read and used, has burgeoned. Now established as a standard reference work, this book has been revised and expanded with a new set of over 200 colour illustrations, updated bibliographies and extended international coverage of libraries and online resources. It covers the history and understanding of inscriptions, bookplates, ink and binding stamps, mottoes and heraldry, and describes how to identify owners and track down books from particular collections via library and sale catalogues. Each section features an evaluated bibliography listing further sources, both online and in print. Illustrated examples of the many kinds of ownership evidence which can be found in books are also shown throughout. Relevant to anyone seeking to identify previous owners of books, or trace private libraries, this title will also support the work of all book historians interested in the history of reading or the use of books and in the book as a material object. An essential handbook for anyone working in provenance research.

Speaking Volumes - Books with Histories (Hardcover): David Pearson Speaking Volumes - Books with Histories (Hardcover)
David Pearson
R1,029 Discovery Miles 10 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Every individual book has a history which can help us to understand what difference it may have made in the world. Within these pages you will find books damaged by bullets or graffiti, recovered from fire or water, or even disguised as completely different texts for protection in dangerous times. Marks of ownership - be it a rich treasure binding or a humble family inscription - shine a light on social history and literacy, while student doodles from the sixteenth century and a variety of pithy annotations give us a sense of readers through the ages. We increasingly recognise that the cultural and research value of books lies not just in their printed contents, but in the many other things they can tell us about the ways they have been used, read and regarded. Generously illustrated with examples from the early Middle Ages to the present day, Speaking Volumes presents a fascinating selection of books in both public and private collections whose individual histories tell surprising and illuminating stories, encouraging us to look at and appreciate books in new and non-traditional ways.

Handbook of Reading Research, Volume II (Hardcover): Rebecca Barr, Michael L. Kamil, Peter B. Mosenthal, P. David Pearson Handbook of Reading Research, Volume II (Hardcover)
Rebecca Barr, Michael L. Kamil, Peter B. Mosenthal, P. David Pearson
R8,010 Discovery Miles 80 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A comprehensive overview of important contemporary issues in the field of reading research from the mid 1980s to mid 1990s, this well-received volume offers readers an examination of literacy through a variety of lenses--some permitting microscopic views and others panoramic views. A veritable "who's who" of specialists in the field, chapter authors cover current methodology, as well as cumulative research-based knowledge. Because it deals with society and literacy, the first section provides the broadest possible view of literacy. The second section defines the range of activities culturally determined to be a part of the enterprise known as literacy. The third focuses on the processes that individuals engage in when they perform the act of reading. The fourth section visits the environment in which the knowledge that comprises literacy is passed on from one generation to the next. The last section, an epilogue to the whole enterprise of reading research, provides apt philosophical reflection.

Handbook of Reading Research, Volume III (Hardcover, c1996-<c2000): Michael L. Kamil, Peter B. Mosenthal, P. David Pearson,... Handbook of Reading Research, Volume III (Hardcover, c1996-
Michael L. Kamil, Peter B. Mosenthal, P. David Pearson, Rebecca Barr
R7,400 Discovery Miles 74 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Volume III, as in Volumes I and II, the classic topics of reading are included--from vocabulary and comprehension to reading instruction in the classroom--and, in addition, each contributor was asked to include a brief history that chronicles the legacies within each of the volume's many topics. However, on the whole, Volume III is not about tradition. Rather, it explores the verges of reading research between the time Volume II was published in 1991 and the research conducted after this date. The editors identified two broad themes as representing the myriad of verges that have emerged since Volumes I and II were published: (1) broadening the definition of reading, and (2) broadening the reading research program. The particulars of these new themes and topics are addressed.

Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation (Paperback, New): Fiona Kennedy, Helen... Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation (Paperback, New)
Fiona Kennedy, Helen Kennerley, David Pearson
R1,370 Discovery Miles 13 700 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The study of dissociation is relevant to anyone undertaking research or treatment of mental health problems. Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation uses a cognitive approach to de-mystify the processes involved in linking traumatic incidents to their effects. Kennedy, Kennerley and Pearson present a full and comprehensive understanding of mental health problems involving dissociative disorders and their treatment, bringing together an international range of experts. Each chapter addresses a single topic in full, including assessment of previous research from a cognitive perspective, recommendations for treatment and case studies to illustrate clinical approaches. Using an evidence-based scientific approach combined with the wisdom of clinical experience, the authors make the relevance of dissociation immediately recognisable to those familiar with PTSD, dissociative identity disorder, eating disorders, hallucinations and a wide range of psychological and non-organic physical health disorders. Designed to provide new perspectives on both research and treatment, Cognitive Behavioural Approaches to the Understanding and Treatment of Dissociation includes a wide range of material that will appeal to clinicians, academics and students.

Integrating CBT and Third Wave Therapies - Distinctive Features (Paperback): Fiona Kennedy, David Pearson Integrating CBT and Third Wave Therapies - Distinctive Features (Paperback)
Fiona Kennedy, David Pearson
R573 Discovery Miles 5 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Integrating CBT and Third Wave Therapies offers a thought-through approach to integrating evidence-based therapies. It provides help for all of us who are developing or have expertise in a variety of evidence-based approaches. The theoretical part of the book briefly reviews four therapies, namely: CBT, DBT, ACT and CFT. The authors identify core processes of change and examine how each therapy contributes to each core process, helping in the integration of all four. The text considers the influence of early adversity on later mental wellbeing, the theoretical underpinnings of mindfulness, behaviour analysis, reliving and re-scripting and dissociation. Theory and practice chapters are illustrated using case vignettes. The book will be useful for therapists to structure sessions with clients. It demonstrates how to follow a theoretical approach and offers a therapeutic structure for integrated clinical work. It will be useful in reflective practice and supervision, and for students learning about a variety of therapeutic approaches.

Handbook of Reading Research, Volume IV (Hardcover): Michael L. Kamil, P. David Pearson, Elizabeth Birr Moje, Peter Afflerbach Handbook of Reading Research, Volume IV (Hardcover)
Michael L. Kamil, P. David Pearson, Elizabeth Birr Moje, Peter Afflerbach
R8,564 Discovery Miles 85 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Handbook of Reading Research is the research Handbook for the field. Each volume has come to define the field for the period of time it covers. Volume IV follows in this tradition. The editors extensively reviewed the reading research literature since the publication of Volume III in 2000, as portrayed in a wide array of research and practitioner-based journals and books, to identify the themes and topics covered. As in previous volumes, the focus is on reading research, rather than a range of literate practices. When taken as a set, the four volumes provide a definitive history of reading research. Volume IV brings the field authoritatively and comprehensively up-to-date.

Teaching Reading - Effective Schools, Accomplished Teachers (Hardcover): Barbara M. Taylor, P. David Pearson Teaching Reading - Effective Schools, Accomplished Teachers (Hardcover)
Barbara M. Taylor, P. David Pearson
R4,172 Discovery Miles 41 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This unique book tells the story of a select group of schools and teachers who have managed to beat the odds in terms of improving elementary students reading achievement. Originating with the CIERA "School Change Project" directed by Barbara Taylor and David Pearson, it was subsequently expanded to include the work of other research teams doing similar work. It combines large scale studies of effective schools and teachers (Part I) with case studies of individual schools and teachers who have successfully transformed research findings into situation-specific strategies appropriate to their schools and classrooms (Parts II and III). The book's distinct contribution is showing that no matter how consistent the research findings on effective school and classroom practice, groups of teachers must improvise their own situation-specific programs and practices. In short, they must be able to create variations on a common theme. Key features of this outstanding new volume include:
*Integration of research and cases--One cannot fully understand research-based general principles without knowing how they play themselves out in specific settings. Similarly, one cannot fully understand cases without seeing the commonalities across different schools and classrooms sharing similar goals. This book provides both perspectives.
*Diverse cases--The schools and classrooms depicted in this book are urban, rural, and suburban; poor and middle class; and English-only and bilingual. Rather than telling readers how to beat the odds, it provides them with a wide variety of cases from which they can extrapolate to build their own customized teaching programs and practices.
*Summarizing section--The final section contains a summary of research on effective schools and teachers and a concluding chapter by Gerry Duffy and Jim Hoffman in which they reflect on the book's content and possible directions for future research.
The book is targeted to both in-service elementary teachers and literacy students in advanced college courses.

The Gradual Release of Responsibility in Literacy Research and Practice (Paperback): Mary McVee, Evan Ortlieb, Jennifer... The Gradual Release of Responsibility in Literacy Research and Practice (Paperback)
Mary McVee, Evan Ortlieb, Jennifer Reichenberg, P. David Pearson
R2,501 Discovery Miles 25 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Educators are always in search of approaches that promote student development and academic achievement. Engaging learners in purposeful instruction in skills and strategies is a cornerstone in every classroom. The gradual release of responsibility (GRR) model requires the responsibility of learning to shift from being teacher-centric towards students gradually assuming responsibility as independent learners. In the last 35 years, the gradual release of responsibility model of instruction has become synonymous with some of the most effective approaches to teach both skills and content to students of all ages. Evidence-based practices have been documented across the globe not only in literacy but also in most disciplines across the curriculum. While the GRR model is a well-established theory, its implementations have not been researched. This edited volume discusses how the GRR model evolved and has been applied, how it benefits learners and teachers, and how it can be utilised for years to come. By looking not only at the gradual release of responsibility model from a theoretical standpoint but also the research and practice of this approach, this book will prove invaluable for educational leaders and researchers alike.

The clearly articulated and useful framework shifts the focus away from children and toward teachers' thinking about their own teaching practice. Interwoven with practical examples of the framework in use, this book identifies ways that teachers and teacher educators can foster more productive kinds of reflection about video-recorded classroom interactions and support preservice and inservice teachers. Offering key tools such as templates for reflection, video viewing guides, self-analysis checklists, and activities, this book moves the field forward and establishes video reflection and the GRR process as critical tools for teacher reflection, professional development, and effective teaching and learning.

Rebel Music in the Triumphant Empire - Punk Rock in the 1990s United States (Paperback): David Pearson Rebel Music in the Triumphant Empire - Punk Rock in the 1990s United States (Paperback)
David Pearson
R1,304 Discovery Miles 13 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the dawn of the 1990s, as the United States celebrated its victory in the Cold War and sole superpower status by waging war on Iraq and proclaiming democratic capitalism as the best possible society, the 1990s underground punk renaissance transformed the punk scene into a site of radical opposition to American empire. Nazi skinheads were ejected from the punk scene; apathetic attitudes were challenged; women, Latino, and LGBTQ participants asserted their identities and perspectives within punk; the scene debated the virtues of maintaining DIY purity versus venturing into the musical mainstream; and punks participated in protest movements from animal rights to stopping the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal to shutting down the 1999 WTO meeting. Punk lyrics offered strident critiques of American empire, from its exploitation of the Third World to its warped social relations. Numerous subgenres of punk proliferated to deliver this critique, such as the blazing hardcore punk of bands like Los Crudos, propagandistic crust-punk/dis-core, grindcore and power violence with tempos over 800 beats per minute, and So-Cal punk with its combination of melody and hardcore. Musical analysis of each of these styles and the expressive efficacy of numerous bands reveals that punk is not merely simplistic three-chord rock music, but a genre that is constantly revolutionizing itself in which nuances of guitar riffs, vocal timbres, drum beats, and song structures are deeply meaningful to its audience, as corroborated by the robust discourse in punk zines.
