This volume provides an in-depth overview from world experts on prion disease. These fatal diseases include Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, chronic wasting disease in deer, scrapie of sheep, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (mad cow's disease) of cattle and related diseases. Understanding what causes neuronal death in these diseases is essential to both preventing and curing them. The most recent advances in understanding neuronal death in prion diseases are presented. Prion diseases serve as an experimental model for all neurodegenerative conditions. This book will provide understanding of neurodegeneration and provide an up-to-date record of the state of the art for other specialists and non-specialists in related fields.
This is the first and only book on the subject of prions to cover the cause of cell death in the disease. It covers the full range of competing theories on the subject, from broad description and basic points up to the final details of the basic science.
The most comprehensive and conceptual one-volume treatment of this field available and the first to emphasize the cellular and molecular aspects of gut peptide biology. Authored by an array of internationally distinguished scientists, it deals with issues of peptide localization and biosynthesis in gastrointestinal cells, mechanisms of peptide release and inactivation and the nature of peptide receptors. The breadth and readability make it an invaluable reference source for scientists in all disciplines interested in any aspect of brain-gut peptides.
Richard Kepperman was on top of his game until blowing the whistle on his high powered Atlanta accounting firm. Black balled from the financial arena, on the verge of bankruptcy, he returns to his roots in coastal Georgia to be near his aging grandfather, Clayton. Frustrated and underemployed, he is an easy mark when approached by a stranger who offers to bet ten million dollars that he can capture Richard within a span of thirty days. In return, Richard will be required to risk all that he holds dear. Given a twenty four hour head start, Richard embarks on an odyssey that will forever change the way he views love, life, friendship and the power of money. On the run, he encounters forces that threaten to do irreparable damage to his sanity and rip his family to shreds. Fighting to stay alive, Richard uncovers the startling truth about the deaths of his parents and learns that the real power behind the stranger is a man who harbors a sixty year old grudge against Clayton and is willing to commit unspeakable atrocities to satisfy his desire for revenge.
This thesis reviews the use of the amphibious airplane in open ocean search and rescue, and examines the applicability of a seaplane to future ocean rescue operations. The author examines the history of amphibious aircraft and why they are no longer in use by the U.S. military, including the Coast Guard. Then a comprehensive review of open ocean search and rescue missions conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard between 1993 and 1995 is used to analyze and predict whether the use of seaplanes by U.S. search and rescue agencies would save additional lives over the current methods in the open ocean environment.
"I am Your Neighbor" is a story of community. It is a collection of stories from 21 people on Chicago's North Side who are clients of the Common Pantry, a non-profit organization that provides emergency groceries and other services to qualifying individuals and families. 100% of all proceeds from book sales will be donated to the Common Pantry to continue their mission of food distribution and expanded services during their Wednesday afternoon "Common Community." VIDEO: "I am Your Neighbor" (Copy and Paste into your Browser) http: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4_0qpiAWC4&feature=g-upl The authors of "I am Your Neighbor" have captured the wonderfully moving stories of some of their neighbors and allow their own words to bring to life the root causes of hunger and economic distress in a way that statistics cannot. Our nation's food pantries and their teams of volunteers provide a great service and work hard each day. However, one of the first steps to alleviating the problem of food insecurity is recognizing that clients are not anonymous strangers, but our neighbors who deserve our compassion and understanding. "I am Your Neighbor" allows each of us to take that first step. "I am Your Neighbor" was inspired by the lives of those people who come to the Common Pantry to be fed -- groceries, hot meals, friendship, direction and community. The book was also inspired by those neighbors who at times do not have a complete understanding of who these people are and what circumstances have combined to bring them to the doors of the Common Pantry. The people whose words fill the chapters of the book were thrilled to have the opportunity to tell their stories and we hope that all who read "I am Your Neighbor" will have a better understanding of what it means to be a neighbor in need and how they can help their neighbor.
This book examines the current Darwinian Evolution evidences commonly presented in secondary and college level biology text books. Each iconic evolution topic is explained, and then critically analyzed in easy to understand terms . Scientific quotes from contemporary naturalists and well-known evolution experts are included as additional evidential support. This book is written BY a veteran biology educator, FOR teachers and students, and also makes an excellent resource for parents to give to their teenagers to stimulate critical thinking. It would be a fantastic addition to public school science classrooms to provide solid counter-arguments to Darwinian Evolution. It promises to strongly challenge Charles Darwin's 150 year old theory with contemporary scientific data and arguments.
