Rosen and Luebbert have edited a collection providing a diverse
sampling of theoretical and scientific approaches to understanding
important markers connected with the evolution of the psyche.
Markers from our evolutionary path can be discerned in the
structure of the human brain, in our similarities to our infrahuman
ancestors, and in contemporary behaviors that, as the essays make
clear, continue to serve purposes best understood in our original
environment of evolutionary adaptedness. Written by some of the
leading investigators in this field, they show why evolutionary
psychology is the most useful paradigm for overcoming the current
disintegration of the psychological sciences. All those with an
interest in the origin of the human mind will find this book
enlightening. It is an important collection for students, scholars,
and other researchers of the psyche.

This volume comprises the proceedings of the First International
Rehovot Conference on Modem Agriculture and the Environment, held
at the Rehovot Campus of the Faculty of Agriculture, the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, Israel, 2-6 October 1994. The conference,
first in a series intended to be convened in Rehovot at 4-5 year
intervals to address various aspects of the interaction of
agriculture and the environment, was initiated, organised and
carried out under the auspices of the Faculty of Agriculture, the
leading academic institution in agricultural and environmental
studies in Israel. It featured four keynote addresses, 39 invited
lectures, 40 submitted papers, and 62 posters. Of these, 51
articles, written by 122 contributing authors from 14 countries,
were selected by the editors to be presented in this book. All
through the twentieth century, and especially ever since the advent
of the Green Revolution, modem agriCUlture has been striving to
feed and clothe the ever increasing multitudes of the human species
through improved technology, relying heavily on tremendous inputs
of fertilisers, pesticides, and various other agrochemicals.
Undoubtedly, this has been a great blessing to mankind, and
enormous strides have indeed been made in the never-ending struggle
against starvation, but these have been achieved at a very steep
price of increased environmental deterioration. In fact, modem
agriculture has become one of the major factors contributing to the
degradation of the world's fragile biosphere.
The great importance of accurate systematics for biological control
has been pointed out and discussed time and again by numerous
authors (see Clausen, 1942; Sabrosky, 1955; Schlinger and Doutt,
1964; Compere, 1969; Rosen and De Bach, 1973; DeBach, 1974;
Delucchi, Rosen and Schlinger, 1976; and others) and does not
require any further elaboration here. Suffice it to say that when
natural enemies are being sought, or are transferred from one
region to another in order to bring about biological control of an
arthropod pest, correct identification of both the target pests and
their natural enemies is an essential prerequisite for ultimate
success. Failure in biological control has often resulted from
inadequate systematics. This monograph, presenting a bio systematic
revision of an important group of natural enemies, is therefore
intended as a contribution to biological control as well as to
basic science. The species of the genus Aphytis Howard
(Hymenoptera: Cha1cidoidea: Aphelinidae) are minute, yellow or
grayish wasps usually not exceeding one millimeter in length (see
Figure I). They develop exclusively as primary ectoparasites of
armored scale insects (Homoptera: Coccoidea: Diaspididae) and are
the most important natural enemies of these serious pests. Armored
scale insects are usually free beneath the hard covering scale or
shield. The adult Aphytis female pierces the shield with the
ovipositor and lays one to several eggs on the body of the scale
insect."
Verdi's Requiem is one of the most frequently performed works of the choral repertoire, and one of Verdi's most important nonoperatic works. In this new handbook, David Rosen discusses the work's composition and performance history, and analyzes each of the seven movements, considering Verdi's interpretation of the liturgical text, with reference to settings by Mozart and Cherubini. Rosen also considers the work's coherence and the controversial issue of its generic status--the degree to which it is "operatic."

Endorsements: ""I think a book should be intelligent, well-crafted,
and beautiful. A book is not a message to grasp but an object to
love. I love this new book of haiku and images and will be happy to
be in its presence, touch it, and feast on it for many years. It is
a perfect example of John Keats' idea of soul-making: transforming
the everyday into beautiful and probing reflection. It is what
Wallace Stevens called 'a mirror with a voice.'"" -- Thomas Moore,
author of "Care of the Soul" and "Dark Nights of the Soul" ""This
deeply human dialogue of haiku and commentary follows in the
footsteps of Issa and Buson. Rosen and Weishaus express their
psychological wisdom with lightness, humor, and a uniquely personal
touch. A treasure "" -- Claire Douglas, author of "Translate this
Darkness" and "The Woman in the Mirror" ""An altogether pleasurable
book indeed "" --Robert Creeley, author of "Life and Death" ""This
book of texts and encounters, of poetic moments and prose
commentaries, of interpersonal responses, has the feeling of a work
that is both very ancient and utterly contemporary. It enacts what
it's about--a spiritual journey, a creative healing."" --Edward
Hirsch, author of "Lay Back the Darkness" and "Wild Gratitude" ""To
have one's soul evoked by reading, that in itself can be a scared
act. To me, since forever, el libro es sancta: a book is
blessed--for inside, there can be water glistening to moisten the
parched throat, and a thunder of wings that can carry us to a
homeplace where exists essential remembrance of 'what truly
matters.' Haiku, to me, is the quintessential story form, one that
like a twilight is meant to be walked through with care, so as to
see and feel the clarity of things that cannot be seen from a dusky
afar. This work you hold in your hands offers that twilight walk,
and more."" --Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., author of "Women Who
Run with the Wolves" and "The Gift of Story"
Spanning nearly 500 years of cultural and social history, this book
examines the ways that literature and surveillance have developed
together, as kindred modern practices. As ideas about
personhood-what constitutes a self-have changed over time, so too
have ideas about how to represent, shape, or invade the self. The
authors show that, since the Renaissance, changes in observation
strategies have driven innovations in literature; literature, in
turn, has provided a laboratory and forum for the way we think
about surveillance and privacy. Ultimately, they contend that the
habits of mind cultivated by literature make rational and
self-aware participation in contemporary surveillance environments
possible. In a society increasingly dominated by interlocking
surveillance systems, these habits of mind are consequently
necessary for fully realized liberal citizenship.

Simulation; Computer-Aided Product and Process Development; Systems
Engineering, Information and Knowledge Management; Virtual
Environments and Systems.
Now a new MTV series, from acclaimed director and executive
producer Doug Liman ("Mr. and Mrs. Smith, "Swingers," "Go," "The
Bourne Identity")
Jason Strider is a twentysomething young man with an English degree
from an Ivy League university, a very small apartment in New York,
a vapid job as a receptionist at a casting agency--and no
particular idea what to do with his life. On most evenings he gets
stoned and goes out, sometimes with his long-time best friend and
wingman Tina and sometimes alone, if not to get laid then at least
to get hammered enough to really regret it the next day "and" be
late for work.
Then one night Jason has athletic, appliance-assisted intercourse
with a cute girl named Jane--and ends up lending her his favorite
Dickies jeans. Many unanswered e-mails and text messages later, he
is reduced to the plaint "I just want my pants back." How he does,
in a" most" unexpected way, find those pants and how he is forced
to face his immaturity--and mortality--are at the heart of this
smart, raunchily comic and deeply affecting novel.
