With the ever increasing use of computers for critical systems, computer security that protects data and computer systems from intentional, malicious intervention, continues to attract attention. Among the methods for defense, the application of a tool to help the operator identify ongoing or already perpetrated attacks (intrusion detection), has been the subject of considerable research in the past ten years. A key problem with current intrusion detection systems is the high number of false alarms they produce. Understanding Intrusion Detection Through Visualization presents research on why false alarms are, and will remain a problem; then applies results from the field of information visualization to the problem of intrusion detection. This approach promises to enable the operator to identify false (and true) alarms, while aiding the operator to identify other operational characteristics of intrusion detection systems.

ETAPS 2001 was the fourth instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conferences. This year it comprised ve conferences (FOSSACS, FASE, ESOP, CC, TACAS), ten satellite workshops (CMCS, ETI Day, JOSES, LDTA, MMAABS, PFM, RelMiS, UNIGRA, WADT, WTUML), seven invited lectures, a debate, and ten tutorials. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system de- lopment process, including speci cation, design, implementation, analysis, and improvement. The languages, methodologies, and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on one hand and soundly-based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware systems, and the emphasis on software is not intended to be exclusive.

This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Principles of Security and Trust, POST 2019, which took place in Prague, Czech Republic, in April 2019, held as part of the European Joint Conference on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2019.
