Why do we exist, what are we and why does it matter? As creatures of logic and reason it seems unreasonable to say that every thought, desire and event in the entire universe has a direct association with the individual. The reason this seems unfathomable is that we are attempting to understand this from an external or ego centered perspective. If we take a brief look at what is happening inside our own physical bodies, we see millions of chemical activities occurring simultaneously and effortlessly. Within our nervous system, neurons are receiving and relaying thousands of electrical signals to control and coordinate all essential functions of your body. Even if we do not take into account the work of the digestive system, the musculoskeletal system, the respiratory system and other networked systems, it is a wonder in and of itself that you are alive and reading these words. This physical manifestation called you, whether fathomable in its entirety or not is who you are A negative reaction to the statement that you have created everything in your world; body, mind, personality, dreams and shortcomings exemplifies the fact that you see your conscious mind as a sole power broker. Ironically, whether you believe you have self-created this individual called you or not, you would be right in both cases. You the conscious thinker or ego has not, but the larger 'you' the intuitive mind within has.

This monograph describes a possible technique to allow military planners to identify key objectives that may be affected in gaining control of a city without destroying it. This technique involves viewing a city as a complex "system of systems" and offers the planner insights as to where to apply military means to achieve the desired ends. While much has been written on Effect Based Operations (EBO), this monograph attempts to "operationalize" the concept. It presents a planning technique to assist in identifying targets, understanding target interrelationships, and analyzing second and third order effects. This study uses the urban environment to present this planning technique. The primary research question is: Is it possible to seize and control a city without destroying it? The secondary question is: Is there a systems approach process to achieve military success in an urban environment? The purpose of this paper is to provide the operational commander with an approach to manage the complexity of the urban environment. It should provide the reader with a systems approach that is grounded in doctrine, a methodology to reduce complexity, and a practical planning approach to assist in urban operations. The systems approach discussed in this paper allows commanders to seize control of a city without destroying it. The approach can be seen as a graduated response matrix where critical requirements are affected in sequence in order to achieve a desired result. While it is impossible to determine to which threshold the adversary would relinquish his control of the city (aim), the systems approach does provide a method to gradually reach that threshold. In addition, the systems approach allows commanders to war-game and record the effects of an action throughout the entire greater system. This important monograph summarizes a comprehensive study on the maturation of walking in normal children. Research, undertaken at one of the world's leading gait analysis centers, involved over 400 studies on a total of nearly 300 children in ten age-groups from one to seven years. Data are presented on anthropometric measurements; tests of developmental progress; time/distance parameters such as stride length and walking velocity; twelve joint angles on each side measured throughout the gait cycle; dynamic electromyography of phasic activity in seven lower-extremity muscle groups; and force measurements including vertical force, fore/aft shear, medial/lateral shear and torque. At each age, composite joint-angle graphs and time/distance parameters are brought together with film tracings of a representative child in that age group. In addition, advanced methods of statistical analysis have been applied to the joint-angle data to define prediction regions within which ninety-five percent of normal children should lie throughout the gait cycle. Finally, a 'decision tree' is presented from which a fitted age can be inferred for a subject based on non-age-specific data gathered in a motion analysis lab. Practical applications are demonstrated in a chapter devoted to two case studies.

For more than two and a half centuries Halifax has experienced both war and peace, growing from a frontier outpost to one of Canada's most appealing and forward-looking cities.
For many years the fate of the city was determined by the rivalries among Britain, France, and the United States: conflict meant prosperity for Halifax in 1812 and again during the U.S. Civil War. During the Victorian era Halifax enjoyed lively commerce and manufacturing and an active and progressive social and cultural life. The early decades of the twentieth century, punctuated by economic depression, world war and the devastation of the 1917 Explosion, were difficult for the city. It was not until the 1960s that Halifax started to prosper again, its growth fuelled by government policies and trends favouring urbanization.
