Paintings displayed in properties now cared for by the National Trust across England, Wales and Northern Ireland amount to one of the finest collections of historic fine art in the world. Indeed, many National Trust houses should perhaps be considered miniature 'National Galleries' for their counties as they display works by some of the most renowned European artists of all time including Titian, El Greco, Holbein, Rubens, van Dyck, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Canaletto, Hogarth, Stubbs, Angelica Kauffman, Edward Burne-Jones, James Tissot, Max Ernst, Vanessa Bell, Barbara Hepworth and Stanley Spencer, to name but a few. Selected by National Trust curators from over 13,000 works, the 100 paintings showcased in this book are arranged chronologically, each accompanied by an illuminating, easy-to-read caption. The book ends with a handy glossary of terms and a list of National Trust properties that house important paintings.

Ed Glinert, David Taylor
R340 Discovery Miles 3 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There might be more books on Oxford than students who have attended the world’s greatest university, but there has never been one as dynamic and exciting as 111 Places in Oxford That You Shouldn’t Miss. Author Ed Glinert has sifted through all the college histories, records and lists of alumni; examined all the quads and cloisters of the great colleges; explored the glorious villages hewn from honey-dripping Cotswold stone; luxuriated in the glamorous coffee houses of High Street; imagined society’s earliest motor cars built at the Morris garages; been struck dumb by the never-ending peal of bells at Tom Tower; relaxed at Carfax, the very centre of the universe; and tippled at each of the legendary pubs between St Giles and Merton. This is a volume which will send residents into paroxysms of laughter, remind students why they’re there, and warn prospective undergrads of the joys of living in one of the world’s most beautiful and cleverest cities.

"Whether you are new to the area or a frequent visitor, this book will be the perfect companion for your exploration of Northumberland and Hadrian's Wall." - Worldwide Writer Hadrian's Wall once marked the northern edge of the Roman Empire, and was built to intimidate the uncouth tribes of hostile local natives. You'll discover how the Romans took a bath - and where they went to spend a penny; why aliens came to stay in a small rural town; where King Arthur lies sleeping until his country needs him; and whether Robin Hood really did take a wrong turn on his journey from Dover to Sherwood Forest. You can also find out if Hadrian was a great emperor or a ruthless tyrant; why pubs were state-owned in Carlisle; where to find the Centre of Britain; and why treasure may lie unclaimed at the bottom of a deep, dark lake. Written by someone with extensive knowledge of the region, this book will help you discover the delights of Hadrian's Wall Country, and even learn some local dialect along the way.

R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Northumberland is the ‘Land of the Far Horizon’ and England’s most northerly county. It was once a place of industrial innovation and manufacturing, literally fuelled by the coal brought up from its depths. Now Northumberland is a quieter place, loved by residents and visitors alike for its rolling hills and long, sandy beaches, as well as its charming towns and villages. With this book in hand, meet Grace Darling, a Victorian heroine who took to storm-tossed seas to help rescue survivors of a terrible shipwreck; visit Amble, the ‘Friendliest Port’, and discover its connection to the Mauretania, once the fastest passenger ship to sail the Atlantic; and take in Turner’s View, an atmospheric stretch of coastline that was a lifelong inspiration to Britain’s greatest landscape painter. You can also take a walk to the top of Cheviot, the county’s highest mountain and what was once a massive and very active volcano; and then top it off in the tranquil setting of St Cuthbert’s Island, where the eponymous saint went to get away from the strangely hectic whirl of monastic life. Written by a proud northerner, this book will help you discover the more offbeat corners of Northumberland, and appreciate its many treasures.

David Taylor
R354 Discovery Miles 3 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Newcastle is England's most northerly city and shares a long history with Gateshead, its neighbour on the south side of the River Tyne. The two, city and town respectively, are a heady mix of the old and new; both were industrial powerhouses during the 19th Century that have successfully embraced recent change, reinventing themselves as vibrant places of entertainment and culture. With this book in hand, journey over and under the Tyne to discover treasures such as the steam turbine ship Turbinia, a sleekly streamlined example of north-eastern mechanical know-how; wander across the wide-open space of the Town Moor, where President Jimmy Carter has the right to graze cattle; take in Saltwell Towers, an eccentric castle in the leafy surroundings of Saltwell Park; then top it all off with a pint in a pub where the ghost of Charles I may well make an appearance. Written by a Geordie, this book will help you explore the quirkier side of both Newcastle and Gateshead, and discover their hidden gems.

Civil Society in South Asia (Hardcover): David Taylor, Hee-won Kim Civil Society in South Asia (Hardcover)
David Taylor, Hee-won Kim
R4,127 Discovery Miles 41 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Are new ideas needed to disentangle the uses and abuses of the idea of civil society both in South Asia and beyond? This book seeks to explore this question by reviewing the debate on civil society mainly in India but also in Pakistan. Civil society is a term that has a rich history in European political and social thought since the 17th century. Yet it has also become shorthand either for groups who place themselves in opposition to state elites or for non- governmental organizations that initiate, often in partnership with international agencies, programmes of economic and social development that to a greater or lesser extent are distanced from the state. The purpose of this collection of essays, initially presented at a seminar in 2018 in Hyderabad in South India, is to explore these disconnects and to see if concepts of civil society can be developed that go with the grain of South Asia's political and historical experience. Some of the chapters in this edited volume focus specifically on theoretical dimensions, while others take case studies from India and Pakistan. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Civil Society.

David Taylor, Scott Slovic, Armando Fernandez Soriano; Contributions by Scott Slovic, David Taylor, …
R1,017 Discovery Miles 10 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An Island in the Stream, a collaboration between Cuban and American writers and scholars, is a diverse collection of ecocritical and literary responses to the natural environment in Cuba and to Cuban environmental culture. The chapters explore Cuba's vibrant cultural history with particular attention to literature and the visual and performing arts, which are viewed through such lenses as ecofeminism, postcolonial ecocriticism, multiculturalism, and the nuclear imaginary, among others. American environmentalists have long viewed modern Cuba as a model of progressive environmental thinking. In the 1990s, the Cuban government made sustainability a centerpiece of national policy initiatives. This book explores some of the historical foundations of contemporary sustainability efforts in Cuba, while also describing the current environmental situation in that part of the world. From Jose Marti to Excilia Saldana, from Antonio Nunez Jimenez to Lydia Cabrera, the chapters here aim to provide a starting point for others who wish to learn about Cuban environmental thought. The conjunction of scholarly and creative work is a gesture toward the interdependence of humanities research and artistic expression, both of which seek to encourage environmental and cultural mindfulness and sensitivity.

The Significance of Dreams - Bridging Clinical and Extraclinical Research in Psychoanalysis (Paperback): Peter Fonagy, Horst... The Significance of Dreams - Bridging Clinical and Extraclinical Research in Psychoanalysis (Paperback)
Peter Fonagy, Horst Kachele, Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber, David Taylor
R1,366 Discovery Miles 13 660 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book looks at dreams from a 21st century perspective. Taking inspiration from Freud 's insights, the contributors pursue psychoanalytic interest into both neuroscience and the modern psychoanalytic consulting room. The chapters cover laboratory research on dreaming alongside the modern clinical use of dreams and link together clinical and empirical research integrating classical ideas with the plurality of psychoanalytic theoretical constructs available to modern researchers. Dreams are created and psychoanalysts writing about dreams have traditionally represented the cutting edge of clinical and theoretical development. This book is no exception to this and many of the contributions, as well as the epistemological positions taken by the writers, represent a kind of radical openness to new ways of thinking about the clinical situation and about theory, which will be necessary for psychoanalysis as a discipline in the coming years. In line with the ambition of the editors of the volume, the book represents an integration of theories and disciplines, which creates the scientific context for modern psychoanalysis. Linking clinical research to extra-clinical research via the royal road of dreaming runs through all the contributions which cover dreaming as it sheds light on clinical conditions such as depression, trauma or dreams as they form a core aspect of clinical work, be that as a co-construction or as shared play between therapist and patients. The book provides insight through dreams to understand mental function in all clinical situations and across all conditions.

Facing the Past - Amending Historical Injustices Through Instruments of Transitional Justice (Hardcover): Peter Malcontent Facing the Past - Amending Historical Injustices Through Instruments of Transitional Justice (Hardcover)
Peter Malcontent; Contributions by Peter Malcontent, Fred Grunfeld, Duco Hellema, Ken Rodman, …
R2,561 Discovery Miles 25 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do societies at the national and international level try to overcome historical injustices? What remedies did they develop to do justice to victims of large scale atrocities? And even more important: what have we learned from the implementation of these so-called instruments of transitional justice in practice?Lawyers, socials scientists and historians have published shelves full of books and articles on how to confront the past through international criminal tribunals, truth commissions, financial compensation schemes and other instruments of retributive/punitive and restorative justice. A serious problem continues to be that broad interdisciplinary accounts that include both categories of measures are still hardly available. With this volume a group of international experts in the field endeavors to fill this gap, and even more. By alternating historical overviews with critical assessments this volume does not only offer an extensive introduction to the world of transitional justice, but also food for thought concerning the effectiveness of the remedies it offers to face the past successfully.

Islam in South Asia (Hardcover): David Taylor Islam in South Asia (Hardcover)
David Taylor
R33,221 Discovery Miles 332 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There are more Muslims over 400 million in South Asia than in any other region in the world. Many of the most important political, intellectual and spiritual developments within Islam have had their origins, or have flourished, in the area, and Muslims from the region have played important roles in the global history of Islam. Pakistan was specifically created to provide a homeland for South Asia s Muslim population, and its trials and tribulations over the past 60 years have been carefully watched by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Muslims constitute India s largest minority, with an often uneasy relationship to the majority.

The early history of Islam in South Asia, including migration, conversion and Muslim dynasties, as well as religious developments, are studied in depth, as is the role of Islam in the colonial period, including resistance to colonial rule, and intellectual responses to, and dialogue with, Western thought. Articles also cover Islam since independence, including political movements, Muslims as majorities and minorities, and the South Asian Muslim diaspora. In addition, Islam and development, including material related to women and Islam, legal reform, Islamic finance, and education issues, are all areas that Islam in South Asia considers.

During the last hundred years there has been extensive English-language writing and research on Islam in South Asia, both by Muslim scholars and by non-Muslims. This new Major Work from Routledge brings together the most significant and enduring work, most of it published in the past thirty years, but with occasional use of older material. Islam in South Asia, with a comprehensive introduction, newly written by the editor to place the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, is destined to be an essential work of reference.

Combatants in African Conflicts - Professionals, Praetorians, Militias, Insurgents, and Mercenaries (Hardcover): Simon David... Combatants in African Conflicts - Professionals, Praetorians, Militias, Insurgents, and Mercenaries (Hardcover)
Simon David Taylor
R4,147 Discovery Miles 41 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on the different types of combatants in conflicts in Africa, exploring the fine lines between what might be classified as a militia in one conflict, a rebel in another, or a terrorist in a third. Drawing on the work of Carl von Clausewitz, this book provides a conceptually stable and analytically sound new typology on combatants. Analysing the relationships between state and society, and drawing on Clausewitz's Trinity of passion, chance, and reason, the book presents a set of five types of armed actors: Professionals, Praetorians, Militias, Insurgents, and Mercenaries. Each type is developed through a close reading of foundational theoretical texts, reviews of contemporary studies, and a historical analysis of their unique characteristics. Unlike a reductionist binary perspective, this typology accounts for the dynamic, complex, and evolving relationships of these actors with the state and society. A typology of combatants in conflicts in Africa can provide avenues for more in-depth analysis of such conflicts and holds implications for Security Sector Reform projects and other peace-building programmes. As such, this book will be an essential reference for scholars and students of African Politics and Military and Security Studies.
