Continuing a Gold Medallion Award-winning legacy, this completely
revised edition of The Expositor s Bible Commentary series puts
world-class biblical scholarship in your hands. Based on the
original twelve-volume set that has become a staple in college and
seminary libraries and pastors studies worldwide, this new
thirteen-volume edition marshals the most current evangelical
scholarship and resources. Of the fifty-six contributors, thirty of
them are new. Reflecting the commentary s international and
cross-denominational approach, they come from the United States,
Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from a
broad diversity of churches, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren,
Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. The Expositor s
Bible Commentary uses the complete New International Version for
its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and
to the original languages. The thoroughly revised features consist
of: Comprehensive introductions A short and precise bibliography A
detailed outline Insightful exposition of passages and verses
Overviews of sections of Scripture to illumine the big picture
Occasional reflections to give more detail on important issues
Notes on textual questions and special problems, placed close to
the text in question Transliterations and translation of Hebrew and
Greek words, enabling readers to understand even the more technical
notes A balanced and respectful approach toward marked differences
of opinion"
This collection of essays is committed to the belief that
evangelicalism continues to have the historical assets and
intellectual (hermeneutical and theological) tools able to
contribute to the global church. Evangelicalism possesses assets
with explanatory power to address significant theological and
cultural issues arising out of the churches in the Global South.
Evangelical approaches to contextualization and biblical studies
can produce valuable fruit. Therefore in May 2008 over a dozen
evangelical scholars (Chinese and Western) from the United States,
Hong Kong and Taiwan, came together to address issues of Christian
and evangelical identity. The Inter-Cultural Theological
Conversation was titled Beyond Our Past: Bible, Cultural Identity,
and the Global Evangelical Movement. This collection of papers from
the conference demonstrates the value of the careful balancing of
judicious appropriation of the social sciences and thorough
biblical inquiry. Questions of evangelical identity in China and
around the world are addressed from the disciplines of history,
biblical studies, and systematic theology/contextualization.
This series is designed for those who know biblical languages. It
is written primarily for the pastor and Bible teacher, not for the
scholar. That is, the aim is not to review and offer a critique of
every possible interpretation that has ever been given to a
passage, but to exegete each passage of Scripture succinctly in its
grammatical and historical context. Each passage is interpreted in
the light of its biblical setting, with a view to grammatical
detail, literary context, flow of biblical argument, and historical
setting. While the focus will not be on application, it is expected
that the authors will offer suggestions as to the direction in
which application can flow.
"Be thankful" (Colossians 3:15) is a recurring exhortation in the
letters of the apostle Paul. No other New Testament writer gives
such a sustained emphasis on thanksgiving--and yet, major modern
studies of Paul fail to wrestle with it. David Pao aims to
rehabilitate this theme in this comprehensive and accessible study,
a New Studies in Biblical Theology volume. He shows how, for Paul,
thanksgiving is grounded in the covenantal traditions of salvation
history. To offer thanks to God is to live a life of worship and to
anticipate the future acts of God, all in submission to the
lordship of Christ. Ingratitude to God is idolatry. Thanksgiving
functions as a link between theology, including eschatology, and
ethics. Here Pao provides clear insights into the passion of an
apostle who never fails to insist on the significance of both the
gospel message and the response this message demands. Addressing
key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies
in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians
better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A.
Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact
with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.
In comparison with other aspects of Jesus' life and ministry, his
ascent into heaven has often been overlooked within the history of
the church. However, considering its placement at the end of the
Gospel and the beginning of Acts - the only narrative depictions of
the event in the New Testament-the importance of Jesus' ascent into
heaven is undeniable for Luke's two-volume work. While select
studies have focused on particular aspects of these accounts for
Luke's story, the importance of the ascension calls for renewed
attention to the narratological and theological significance of
these accounts within their historical and literary contexts. In
this volume, leading scholars discuss the ascension narratives
within the ancient contexts of biblical, Second Temple Jewish, and
Greco-Roman literature; the literary contours of Luke-Acts; and
questions of historical and theological significance in the wider
milieu of New Testament theology and early Christian
historiography. The volume sets out new positions and directions
for the next generations of interpreters regarding one of the most
important and unique elements of the Lukan writings.
