Jim Clark in the 20th Century and Thomas Chalmers in the 19th are two of those who have gone out from the rural obscurity of Kilmany to wider fame. It is one of the historic parishes of North East Fife dating back to the beginning of the 13th Century, if not a little earlier. However, its name implies the existence of a Christian community here at least from the 8th Century. Though it has always been an agricultural area, in the Middle Ages it contained an important base for the Earls of Fife whose hereditary role was to crown the Scottish Kings. From 1450, for over four hundred years it had a close association with St Salvator's College in the University of St Andrews. Set in the quiet beauty of unspoilt countryside, its story still reflects the turbulence of Scotland's past. The author lives in the village.
David Weeks exposes the brutal reality of modern-day violence - lightening the often vicious tales with humour - and takes the reader into the very 'essence of a man'. It appears that we live in shockingly violent times; dominated by media depictions of gun and knife crime and amoral street gangs. This book explores the myriad theories behind male violence and looks at the history of 'street' conflict; from the Irish-American gangs of the 19th century to the stabbings and brawling of modern-day football hooligans. Are we 'born to fight'? Is it an instinctive drive that's enabled man to survive as a species so successfully? What about gender stereotypes; male role models; the influence of alcohol, drugs, pornography and profanity? How influenced are we by the media? How big a role does religion and racism play in modern societal violence? What about our own personal morality? What percentage of our genetic make-up influences our behaviour, as opposed to our environment? This book examines the root causes of anger, fear and aggression and how we can learn to understand these often damaging emotions and the negative effects they have on the human body. Why do certain young people gravitate towards gangs? How common is the use of a weapon on Britain's streets today? This book includes 23 gripping interviews with people who reveal the true stories of their own awful experiences with violence.

Yet during the game's history, hundreds of players, coaches and spectators have died while playing or watching the National Pastime. In its the second edition, this ground breaking study provides the known details for 150 years of game-related deaths, identifies contributing factors and discusses resulting changes to game rules, protective equipment, crowd control and stadium structures and grounds. Topics covered include pitched and batted-ball fatalities, weather and field condition accidents, structural failures, fatalities from violent or risky behavior and deaths from natural causes.
