influence the country and almost everyone in it. Concrete evidence
of this traditional culture can be seen everywhere--in the ancient
arts and crafts that are still essentiasl parts of everyday life,
in the many shrines and temples that dot the nation, and in the
recent comeback of traditional fashions such as kimono and yakata

of this traditional culture's strength is the unique etiquette of
the Japanese. Like many nations, Japan has experienced vast

latest etiquette in mobile phone manners, texting, social media and
other forms of digital communication. The glossary at the back of
the book has been revised to include the latest technology-related
words and expressions used by Japanese today. Two new chapters
address the changing role of foreigners in the workplace and the
contemporary business style and etiquette used by the younger
generation of Japanese who are now increasingly cosmopolitan--but
still very Japanese!

Arizona's Navajo Indians, the largest tribe of Native Americans in
the U.S. with a Reservation larger than 10 of the smaller states,
arrived in the area several thouand years agos--an amazing event
chornicled in their oral history and in key words in their
language. Author Boye Lafayette De Mente has used these key words
to reveal not only the history but the extraordinary culture and
wisdom of the Navajos. Far from being simple savages when they
first encountered white men in the 1500s, they had a long tradition
of poetry and healing that equaled that of European nations. The
book also details the virtual extinction of the Navajos in the
1860s by the U.S. military and their comback from this "Fearing
Time"--an amazing saga of American arrogance, ignorance and inhuman
treamtment of an extraordinary people.
The oral history of Arizona's Hopi Indian tribe tells them that
they were the first human beings to inhabit the North and South
American continents and that they arrived aboard large rafts,
island-hopping across the Pacific Ocean...not by the land bridge
that once connected Alaska and Siberia. The details of their
arrival, splitting up into groups and going in different directions
to populate the two continents, are so detailed that it is hard to
believe that they are just myths concocted for some ulterior
purpose. In this provocative title, the author, known for his
code-word books on the cultures of China, Japan, Korea and Mexico,
uses key Hopi words as windows to reveal the traditional beliefs,
customs and spirit of the Hopi people. The spiritual-based
lifestyle they created was in many ways far superior to those that
developed in Europe and other parts of the world...especially in
their understanding of both humans and nature, and the cosmos at
large. Perhaps most astounding of all in the story of the Hopi is
their tradition of prophecies and their in-credible accuracy.
This book describes customs that reveal the mindset of present-day
Japanese, providing a fascinating look at how they think and why
they think and behave the way they do. These things include
historical events, their "kata-based" business practices,
male-female relationships, nighttime entertainment trades and other
forms of recreation from sightseeing to the imaginative use of
high-tech devices. It is a useful read for business people as well
as for travelers and anyone interested in modern-day Japanese
culture.

AMERICA'S FALL FROM GRACE / QUOTES YOU MAY WANT TO USE This
handbook distills into quotable comments the more obvious faults,
failures, idiosyncrasies and occasional flashes of wisdom displayed
by humanity-an incredibly mixed bag of ignorance, willful
stupidity, intelligence and accomplishment that boggles the mind.
Topics covered in the handbook cover boys, business,
businesspeople, Christianity, cultures, drugs, economics,
entertainment, girls, God, gods, homosexuals, the Internet, Islam,
Jews, men, news media, obesity, politics, politicians, religions,
sex, sexuality, TV commercials, women, and more The contrasts
between the animalistic qualities and the god-like qualities of
human beings described in the book may suggest to some that the
differences may be one of nature's greatest jokes-or that nature is
just experimenting as it has done with all other life forms on the
planet. There is also a summation at the end of the book that
delves into the physical, intellectual and spiritual nature of
human beings-aspects that make them amazing, frustrating,
intriguing and provocative creatures. As noted, the book presents
insights into the human condition in a collection of incisive
quotes you may want to use on any number of occasions
In this book the author offers explanations of why male dominance
and religious dogma have prevented human beings from achieving the
peace, security and prosperity that most people desire. Known for
his business and cultural-insight books on China, Japan, Korea and
Mexico, De Mente attributes the weaknesses and/or failings of all
of the fundamental elements of human cultures on the dominance
factor in the genetic programming of human males. "Males are
designed to dominate in all of their relationships, particularly
with females, and this is at the core of most of the problems that
have afflicted mankind since the origin of the species," De Mente
says. "This dominate trait in the make-up of males was responsible
for the creation not only of the world's cultures but also the
creation of gods to explain the phenomena of life, nature and the
cosmos in general," he adds. De Mente says that when males in the
human species became self-aware they developed a compelling urge
for an explanation of life and the material world around them, and
began creating gods to explain how it all came about. "Virtually
all if not all ancient people created a multitude of gods to
explain their existence and the existence of animals, the seas, the
mountains, the weather and other elements of nature-resulting in an
array of gods that in some cultures continue to be worshipped
today." he adds. "Then between four and five thousand years ago the
religious leaders of a group of Hebrew tribes who lived what is now
Israel gradually came to the conclusion that there should be just
one god so they created a single god and began to preach that he
was the only God." Members of these tribes later became known as
Jews, from the name of one of the tribes.] "However, this one-god
theology was not effective in changing the inherent nature of men,
so some two thousand years ago Jewish prophets decided to add an
additional element by introducing an earthly representative of God
who decades after his birth became known as Jesus Christ, the Son
of God, who could act directly with his followers and presumably be
more effective. "This too failed to curb the ignorance, willful
stupidity and violent nature of males, so still today all of the
different versions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam-along with
other religious cults-are rent with varying degrees of
discrimination, greed, intolerance and violence." The book explains
why males regard themselves as superior to females; why females are
in fact superior to males; why both male and female sexuality has
been misunderstood and misused; the damage done to females by
religions, and the transition from a religious-based morality to a
money-and-profit-based morality that has spread around the world.
De Mente outlines fundamental changes that he says are essential
before human beings can rise up out of the muck and mire of all of
the male-created and male-dominated cultural
institutions-religious, economic, educational, political and
social-and achieve their full potential.
In the early 1600s some of Japan's samurai who were not vassals of
fief clan lords traveled about the country challenging other
samurai to fight duels to the death as their way of training-a
shogunate approved custom known as shugyosha shuu-g'yoh-shah] or
"samurai-in-training," The shugyosha who was to become the most
famous samurai in Japan's history was a young man named Musashi
Miyamoto, who fought his first duel when he was 13 years old. By
the time Miyamoto was 28 he had killed over 60 other samurai in
death duels, a dueling record that has never been equaled in any
country where duels were a common practice. Somehow, at a very
young age, Miyamoto had developed a fighting technique based on 13
principles and 13 practices that made him invincible-simply
unbeatable by a single or multiple opponents. Miyamoto then retired
from killing, but continued roaming the country, teaching his way
of sword-fighting at the dojo of fief lords and staging
demonstrations. The principles and practices Miyamoto created were
based on the fundamentals of Zen: recognizing the difference
between illusion and reality; between the irrational and rational;
between the impractical and practical; between weakness and
strength, etc. In addition to the story of Zen in India, China,
Korea and Japan, I have identified and described the 26 principles
and practices Miyamoto created and reformulated them as guidelines
for the most desirable mindset and behavior of all categories of
people, from athletes, businesspeople, educators, parents and
politicians to students.
