In this volume, operators, engineers, and researchers present
information about all aspects of current processing technologies
for nickel and cobalt, as well as emerging technologies for both
metals. Contributions from industry and academia encompass
metallurgical aspects of metals commonly associated with nickel and
cobalt, such as copper and platinum group metals (PGMs). Specific
focus areas of the collection include, but are not limited to
mineral processing, metallurgy of nickel and cobalt ores, battery
materials, recycling, recovery of associated byproducts and PGMs,
and sulfide and laterite processing.
This collection honoring Professor Jiann-Yang Hwang focuses on
characterization and processing development in minerals, metals,
and materials. Topics include but are not limited to:*
Characterization methodology of minerals, metals, and materials *
Microwave-assisted material processes * Recycling and reuse of
metallurgical byproducts * Materials for hydrogen storage *
Wastewater treatment and environmental protection * Natural
materials for value-added applications * Principles and
interactions of material characterization and manufacturing
processing
In recent years, global metallurgical industries have experienced
fast and prosperous growth. High-temperature metallurgical
technology is the backbone to support the technical, environmental,
and economical needs for the growth. This collection features
contributions covering the advancements and developments of new
high-temperature metallurgical technologies and their applications
to the areas of processing of minerals; extraction of metals;
preparation of metallic, refractory and ceramic materials;
treatment and recycling of slag and wastes; and saving of energy

The technology, operation, energy, environmental, analysis, and
future development of the metallurgical industries utilizing high
temperature processes are covered in the book. The innovations on
the extraction and production of ferrous and nonferrous metals,
alloys, and refractory and ceramic materials, the heating
approaches and energy management, and the treatment and
utilizations of the wastes and by-products are the topics of
special interests. This book focuses on the following issues: *High
Efficiency New Metallurgical Process and Technology Fundamental
Research of Metallurgical Process *Alloys and Materials Preparation
*Direct Reduction and Smelting Reduction *Coking, New Energy and
Environment *Utilization of Solid Slag/Wastes and Complex Ores
*Characterization of High Temperature Metallurgical Process
This collection includes the analysis, development, and operation
of high-temperature processes that involve the extraction and
processing of material resources, production, and treatment of
metals, alloys, and ceramic materials. Contributions describe
innovative methods for achieving property enhancement, impurity
segregation and removal, byproduct recovery, waste minimization,
energy efficiency, and utilization of complex ores. Also included
are various technical, economic, and environmental issues
associated with commercial-scale high-temperature processing
methods.
No pyrometallurgical smelter can operate without some form of
tapping system. It is the one thing all smelters have in common.
This collection discusses this meeting point of the science,
technology, and skill involved in this process. The tap-hole design
process includes a set of design criteria, which need to be revised
as the results of laboratory, computational fluid dynamics (CFD),
and time-and-motion studies become available. The tap-hole life
cycle is considered in this volume, with authors addressing the
requirements for installation and operability as well as for
maintenance. Matters such as online monitoring of the tap-hole
wear, handling of liquid products, and extraction of fumes are all
discussed. Although much has been done to make the tapping process
as automatic as possible, tapping of smelters cannot be done
without labor. Tap floor operators work in harsh environments where
safety is of utmost importance. Selection of suitable personnel and
intensive training is required and is discussed in this collection.
