The ignorant bystander: Britain and the Rwandan genocide uses a
case study of Britain's response to the genocide to explore what
factors motivate humanitarian intervention in overseas crises. The
Rwandan genocide was one of the bloodiest events in the late
twentieth century and the international community's response has
stimulated a great deal of interest and debate ever since. In this
study, Dean White provides the most thorough review of Britain's
response to the crisis written to date. The research draws on
previously unseen documents and interviews with ministers and
senior diplomats, and examines issues such as how the decision to
intervene was made by the British Government, how media coverage
led to a significant misunderstanding of the crisis, and how
Britain shaped debate at the UN Security Council. The book
concludes by comparing the response to Rwanda, to Britain's
response to the recent crises in Syria and Libya. -- .
"Readers and comics fans who prefer their sci-fi full of weird
creatures, complicated world building, lots of action, and
protagonists with heart will find plenty to like in this series.
Hand to fans of Brian K. Vaughan's Saga (2012) or Jonathan
Hickman's Manhattan Projects (2012)." -Booklist In this second
volume of the hit series, the Anarchist League of Scientists dives
further into the Onion construct of reality than ever before,
jumping wildly through worlds of wonder, fantastic beauty, and
cosmic horrors. Beset on dangers from without and within, the team
must learn to be a family if they're ever to survive and find their
way home again.
"A must-read for Remender's fans or anyone thrilled by bizarre and
compelling sci-fi." Starred Review - Booklist "There is a lot of
meat to this book. Plenty for everyone to like, or dislike. The
dangers are real. People die. The worldbuilding is solid even
though we're jumping through different realities. Each of those
worlds pops off the page and has their own distinct look and feel."
- Kirkus "This is a solid adventure tale..." - PW Grant McKay,
former member of The Anarchistic Order of Scientists, has finally
done the impossible: He has deciphered Black Science and punched
through the barriers of reality. But what lies beyond the veil is
not epiphany, but chaos. Now Grant and his team are lost, living
ghosts shipwrecked on an infinite ocean of alien worlds, barreling
through the long-forgotten, ancient, and unimaginable dark realms.
The only way is forward, through the madness of the lightning
sea-swamp and a futurepast trenchworld, where the Sons of the Wakan
Tech-Tanka wage never-ending war on the savages of Europe! How did
the Anarchist League of Scientists end up this deep in the onion?
And, who among them sabotaged the Pillar?

This is a guide for baby boomers who are about to retire from an
all-consuming profession, and are concerned about what they are
going to do next. Retirement for Type "A" overachieving
professionals can be an opportunity to do something else that is
equally as important as what they once did. This book explores the
nature of change, balance, aging, health, boredom, solitude,
thankfulness, volunteering, mentoring, freedom, legacy and the art
of piddling.
