Dee and Cathy travel extensively, in and out of the United States.
They also enjoy teaching about this great country, starting from
both a historic perspective and a geographic one. Along the route
they have put together a number of lapbooks for the use of their
own students and other families. Here you find lapbooks and mini
units of four sample states: Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, and
Tennessee; two sample cities: Washington, D.C. and New York City;
and two other mini units on National Parks and Animals across the
U.S.
This little book brings the history of Jamestown to life with an
annotated timeline and simple pictures...A simple look at an
important part of our history that was anything but simple.
For many young writers the most difficult part of their task is
getting started. They want to write. (Or someone else wants them to
write ) But they don't know where to begin. And oftentimes when
they do begin, they are overwhelmed by the risks of improper
spelling or improper punctuation. This workbook takes away the
writer's block and the risks. It gives struggling writers starting
points and enough minimal direction to get them writing. It also
reminds them that in a rough draft spelling and punctuation are not
critical, the writing is. Proper spelling and punctuation are
important, but they can come later, after the writing has really
begun. The workbook takes the student through the process of
improving ten sentences, in four different ways. Only after the
student has written a sentence four different ways are they even
asked to turn it into a paragraph. And only after they have done
all ten sentences and paragraphs are they asked to go beyond those
and try their hand at constructing a story. And at that point they
are reminded to pay attention to proper spelling and grammar.
Now, in this expanded version, you also receive masters of nine
different lapbooks to get you and your students started on the
journey to lapbooking fun A lapbook is a portable project filled
with pictures and other neat information about a topic. It's a
great hands-on way for students to start learning about a topic, or
to wrap up a study. But many teachers/parents are intimidated by
where to begin with these great resources. Our goal is to take the
unknown out of lapbooking and show you how easy it is to
incorporate lapbooks into your educational options. There are many
bigger and more complicated guides to lapbooking out there - in
this booklet we want to show families how easy it can be - and
encourage them to add consider it for their homeschooling journey.

Catherine and Deirdre have brought together a variety of their
travel related materials in one convenient place. They start with
their "Ultimate (Field) Trip Survival Guide" - a booklet that gives
lots of great suggestions on traveling with children. They follow
that up with a variety of lapbooks and mini units, including their
Vacation Lapbook, the National Parks Lapbook, and the Washington,
and D.C. Monuments and Memorials Mini Unit. Those are followed by
two of Catherine's travel journals, Stars Over Central America: The

Catherine and Deirdre give you a simple introduction to lapbooking
and a variety of lapbooks they have created through the years about
eight different countries (Canada, Chile, Dominican Republic,
Haiti, "Emerald Isle," Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, Panama, and
Papua New Guinea). Clearly these countries are a mere sampling of
the wonderful countries across the world that you can study with
your students. Our hope is that you and your students will take
these ideas and put together your own lapbooks after you've done
several of these. You will quickly see that these lapbooks have
many things in common: maps, flags, timelines, and pictures. They
also have one other thing in common - little to no instructions.
Catherine and Deirdre believe in giving students and teachers some
basic tools to get them started and then the flexibility to go in
whichever directions they desire. Add file folders, students, and
imagination and you should be ready to go
This large, reproducible book includes numerous resources to help
teach students about this important topic It includes Catherine's
first Civil Rights book, The Rocky Road to Civil Rights, a Civil
Rights Time-line Game, Tales from the Troubled South, and several
lapbooks. A discussion ensued at my house while I was finishing
this project - was it racist to continue to teach "Black History"
separately? To have a Black History month? And is there anything to
celebrate when we look at Civil Rights - or is it just a tale of
tragedy and misdoings? The discussion certainly made me pause and
think. Here are my brief answers to the questions, the way I see
them at this point in American History: 1.No, it is not racist to
teach Black History separately, as long as it is lacking in our
regular History studies, which I think is still the case at the
moment. 2.Ditto for having a Black History month. 3.There has
certainly been no shortage of tragedy and misdoings on the rocky
road to Civil Rights in this country, but there is much to be
celebrated along the way. The larger portion of this book, A Rocky
Road to Civil Rights, came initially from a lengthy study I did in
preparation for a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration many years
ago. I was amazed at how much I didn't know of the events/people
that fill its pages. It took me too many years from writing that
book to turn most of the dates from it into a Time-Line Game. I had
been writing time-line games on a number of historic topics for
several years before I finally made the Civil Rights game. Part of
me struggled with having a game on such a serious topic - but I
finally realized that students often learn well from games, and it
was too important a topic not to make into a game. The Troubled
Tales book came out of a need to know more (and teach more) about
the course of Civil Rights in the state in which I have resided for
more than fifteen years. My hope is to eventually write several
more in the series, on some of our neighboring states, but what
happened in Alabama during the struggle for Civil Rights is
important, even to those who don't live here. I only recently
finished the Matching Game. It remained a "work in progress" for
too many years. There are many more people who could be added to
game, it is by no means complete. But I think it gives a good
sampling of historic Blacks, many of whom are too often forgotten.
My good friend Dee has graciously made the lapbooks of Booker T.
Washington, George Washington Carver, and Jesse Owens. Again, the
amount of information we didn't know about these three important
men was rather staggering. My hope is that this topic will be
studied more than one month per year and that someday all Americans
will have a greater appreciation for the contributions throughout
our history by minorities. The resources here can be used in any
order, as stand-alone mini units, or incorporated into the
appropriate places in an overall American History study. I also
included several "fillers" that I think need to be included more in
not just a Black History study, but any American History studies:
the relevant portions of the United States Constitution, Abraham
Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and a very small sampling of
Phillis Wheatley's poetry.
Over the years we have enjoyed frequent studies of astronomy -
particularly the History of Astronomy. I am not an astronomer, I am
a historian, and that's how I've approached these studies. During
those times we have developed a fair number of educational products
to increase our enjoyment - including timeline games, several
min-units/lapbooks, and more. Now for the first time, we have put
all of those different things together in one book. Here you will
find: an introduction to astronomers, mini units on five specific
astronomers (Copernicus, Galileo, Charles Messier, William
Herschel, and Caroline Herschel), a planets mini unit/lapbook, a
mini unit on the development of the microscope and telescope, a
History of Astronomy Time-Line Game, and a Space Exploration
Time-Line Game. Warning: This is a book about astronomy written by
a Christian. As such, it includes Scriptures in several places. If
you do not want the Biblical perspective when you teach it, you can
easily leave out those portions. For more on lapbooking, see our
Lapbooking Made Easy Expanded Edition. There you will find many
ideas (general and specific) on using lapbooking in your
educational journey.
Please Note: In response to the concerns in some of the reviews, we
have come out with the Lapbooking Made Easy Expanded Version. (It
includes everything from this, the original book, as well as many
sample lapbooks to help get you started. And it only costs $1.00
more ) What is Lapbooking? A lapbook is a portable project filled
with pictures and other neat information about a topic. It's a
great hands-on way for students to start learning about a topic, or
to wrap up a study. But many teachers/parents are intimidated by

is to take the unknown out of lapbooking and show you how easy it
is to incorporate lapbooks into your educational options. Why this
booklet? There are many bigger and more complicated guides to
Lapbooking out there - in this SMALL, CONSISE booklet we have
worked to show families how easy it can be - and encourage them to
add consider it for their homeschooling journey.
