An all-star cast of scholars and politicians from Europe and
America propose and debate the creation of a new European
parliament with substantial budgetary and legislative power to
solve the crisis of governance in the Eurozone and promote social
and fiscal justice and public investment. The European Union is
struggling. The rise of Euroskeptic parties in member states,
economic distress in the south, the migrant crisis, and Brexit top
the news. But deeper structural problems may be a greater long-term
peril. Not least is the economic management of the Eurozone, the
nineteen countries that use the Euro. How can this be accomplished
in a way generally acceptable to members, given a political system
whose structures are routinely decried for a lack of democratic
accountability? How can the EU promote fiscal and social justice
while initiating the long-term public investments that Europe needs
to overcome stagnation? These are the problems a distinguished
group of European and American scholars set out to solve in this
short but valuable book. Among many longstanding grievances is the
charge that Eurozone policies serve large and wealthy countries at
the expense of poorer nations. It is also unclear who decides
economic policy, how the interests of diverse member states are
balanced, and to whom the decision-makers are accountable. The four
lead authors-Stephanie Hennette, Thomas Piketty, Guillaume
Sacriste, and Antoine Vauchez-describe these and other problems,
and respond with a draft treaty establishing a parliament for
economic policy, its members drawn from national parliaments. We
then hear from invited critics, who express support, objections, or
alternative ideas. How to Democratize Europe offers a chance to
observe how major thinkers view some of the Continent's most
pressing issues and attempt to connect democratic reform with
concrete changes in economic and social policies.
This second edition of Concrete Pavement Design, Construction, and
Performance provides a solid foundation for pavement engineers
seeking relevant and applicable design and construction
instruction. It relies on general principles instead of specific
ones, and incorporates illustrative case studies and prime design
examples to highlight the material. It presents a thorough
understanding of materials selection, mixture proportioning, design
and detailing, drainage, construction techniques, and pavement
performance. It also offers insight into the theoretical framework
underlying commonly used design procedures as well as the limits of
the applicability of the procedures. All chapters have been updated
to reflect recent developments, including some alternative and
emerging design technologies that improve sustainability. What's
New in the Second Edition: The second edition of this book contains
a new chapter on sustainability, and coverage of
mechanistic-empirical design and pervious concrete pavements. RCC
pavements are now given a new chapter. The text also expands the
industrial pavement design chapter. Outlines alternatives for
concrete pavement solutions Identifies desired performance and
behavior parameters Establishes appropriate materials and desired
concrete proportions Presents steps for translating the design into
a durable facility The book highlights significant innovations such
as one is two-lift concrete pavements, precast concrete pavement
systems, RCC pavement, interlocking concrete pavers, thin concrete
pavement design, and pervious concrete. This text also addresses
pavement management, maintenance, rehabilitation, and overlays.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

This classic test first published in 1966 has withstood the test of
time as a teaching aid for English-speaking singers, coaches, and
accompanists, in order that their art may be more communicative to
the public. This word-by-word translation allows the artist to
properly interpret and express the feelings and emotions that the
words require at the proper time.
This book provides informative, useful, and stimulating reading on
the topic of organic sonochemistry - the core of ultrasound-based
applications. Given the increasing interest in new and improved
technologies, allied to their green and sustainable character (not
always a valid premise), there is a great attraction for organic
chemists to apply these protocols in synthesis and process
chemistry. Unfortunately, as with other enabling technologies, many
researchers new to the field have received a simple and dishonest
message: just switch on! Therefore a significant portion of
sonochemical syntheses lack reproducibility (surprisingly
cavitation control and/or ultrasonic parameters are omitted) and
the actual role of sonication remains uncertain. While this book
does not provide a detailed description of fundamentals, the
introductory remarks highlight the importance of cavitational
effects and their experimental control. It presents a number of
concepts of sonochemical reactivity and empirical rules with
pertinent examples, often from classical and recent literature. It
then focuses on scenarios of current interest where organic
chemistry, and synthesis in particular, may benefit from sonication
in terms of both chemical and mechanical activation. The
"sustainable corner" of this field is largely exemplified through
concepts like atom economy, renewable sources, wasteless syntheses,
and benign solvents as reaction media. This book is useful for both
researchers and graduate students, especially those familiar with
the field of sonochemistry and applications of ultrasound in
general. However, it is also of interest to a broader audience as
it discusses the fundamentals, techniques, and experimental skills
necessary for scientists wishing to initiate the use of ultrasound
in their domain of expertise.

In 1943 a young official from the German foreign ministry contacted
Allen Dulles, an OSS officer in Switzerland who would later head
the Central Intelligence Agency. That man was Fritz Kolbe, who had
decided to betray his country after years of opposing Nazism. While
Dulles was skeptical, Kolbe's information was such that he
eventually admitted, "No single diplomat abroad, of whatever rank,
could have got his hands on so much information as did this man; he
was one of my most valuable agents during World War II." Using
recently declassified materials at the U.S. National Archives and
Kolbe's personal papers, Lucas Delattre has produced a work of
remarkable scholarship that moves with the swift pace of a Le Carre
thriller.
Since the first edition was published in 1989, Character and Cops
has been considered the bible of police ethics training. The book
is a comprehensive guide to the ethical challenges faced daily by
police officers, especially in times of heightened security. The
updated sixth edition features a new foreword by David Bores, a
retired lieutenant colonel in the United States military police,
and a new chapter titled 'From War Veterans to Peace Officers, '
which explores policies for incorporating soldiers returning from
Iraq and Afghanistan into the domestic police force
