This collection re-evaluates the work of fifteenth-century poet
John Lydgate in light of medieval material culture. Top scholars in
the field unite here with critical newcomers to offer fresh
perspectives on the function of poetry on the cusp of the modern
age, and in particular on the way that poetry speaks to the
heightened relevance of material goods and possessions to the
formation of late medieval identity and literary taste. Advancing
in provocative ways the emerging fields of fifteenth-century
literary and cultural study, the volume as a whole explores the
role of the aesthetic not only in late medieval society but also in
our own.
The Modernist movement in literature had revolutionary aspirations
and pioneered new possibilities of literary expression. One of its
major projects was to question the nature of selfhood and to
rewrite personal experience in terms of fragmentation, conflict and
discontinuity. English literary Modernism, in particular, broke
down the assumption that self-experience is unitary and
coherent.;This book represents an exploration of the ways in which
key modern writers challenged conventional ways of characterizing
selfhood and, whether by poetic montage or stream-of-consciousness
writing, developed a discourse expressive of the subtleties of
experience in a post-Freudian world. It is argued that modernist
texts were involved in self-representation long before
post-structuralist or post-modernist theories were applied.
The Arma Christi, the cluster of objects associated with Christ's
Passion, was one of the most familiar iconographic devices of
European medieval and early modern culture. From the weapons used
to torment and sacrifice the body of Christ sprang a reliquary
tradition that produced active and contemplative devotional
practices, complex literary narratives, intense lyric poems,
striking visual images, and innovative architectural ornament. This
collection displays the fascinating range of intellectual
possibilities generated by representations of these medieval
'objects,' and through the interdisciplinary collaboration of its
contributors produces a fresh view of the multiple intersections of
the spiritual and the material in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
It also includes a new and authoritative critical edition of the
Middle English Arma Christi poem known as 'O Vernicle' that takes
account of all twenty surviving manuscripts. The book opens with a
substantial introduction that surveys previous scholarship and
situates the Arma in their historical and aesthetic contexts. The
ten essays that follow explore representative examples of the
instruments of the Passion across a broad swath of history, from
some of their earliest formulations in late antiquity to their
reformulations in early modern Europe. Together, they offer the
first large-scale attempt to understand the arma Christi as a
unique cultural phenomenon of its own, one that resonated across
centuries in multiple languages, genres, and media. The collection
directs particular attention to this array of implements as an
example of the potency afforded material objects in medieval and
early modern culture, from the glittering nails of the Old English
poem Elene to the coins of the Middle English poem 'Sir Penny,'
from garments and dice on Irish tomb sculptures to lanterns and
ladders in Hieronymus Bosch's panel painting of St. Christopher,
and from the altar of the Sistine Chapel to the printed prayer
books of the Reformation.
This fourth edition of Introduction to Psychotherapy builds on
the success of the previous three editions and remains an essential
purchase for trainee psychotherapists, psychiatrists and other
professionals. It has been revised and extended to capture some of
the current themes, controversies and issues relevant to
psychotherapy as it is practised today.
Bateman has added new chapters on attachment theory and
personality disorder and has developed further the research
sections on selection and outcome. His new chapter on further
therapies covers a variety of therapeutic movements and establishes
links between these and classical psychoanalytical therapies.
Introduction to Psychotherapy is a classic text that has been
successfully updated to provide a relevant and essential
introduction for anyone interested in psychotherapy.

New investigations into Charles d'Orleans' under-rated poem, its
properties and its qualities. The compilation Fortunes Stabilnes,
the English poetry Charles d'Orleans wrote in the course of his
twenty-five year captivity in England after Agincourt, requires a
larger lens than that of Chaucerianism, through which it has most
often been viewed. A fresh view from another perspective, one that
attends to form and style, as well as to the poet's French
traditions, reveals a more conceptually complex and innovative kind
of poetry than we have seen until now. The essays collected here
reassess him in the light of recent work in Middle English studies.
They detail those qualities that make his text one of the most
accomplished and moving of the late Middle Ages: Charles's use of
English, his metrical play, his felicity with formes fixes lyrics,
his innovative use of the dits structure and lyric sequences, and
finally, above all, his ability to write beautiful poetry. Overall,
they bring out the underappreciated contribution made by Charles to
the canon of English poetry.

This book contains a stimulating diversity of chapters that explore
the development of Foulkesian ideas - [it is] a fine exposition of
group analysis.' - Group Analysis 'This is essential contemporary
reading.' - British Journal of Psychiatry In this examination of
the legacy of Foulkes, the theoretical foundations of group
psychotherapy are applied to a range of groups, including family
therapy, institutional dynamics and educational therapy.
Contributors to this volume include distinguished group analysts,
such as Pines and De Mar , and more junior analysts selected for
their original thinking. The complexity of creating a coherent
theory of group analysis is underlined by the multiple authorship
of a single volume compiled and edited along group principles.
Editors Brown and Zinkin also had access to the preliminary notes
of a proposed book on group theory, cut short by Foulkes's death,
which cover topics as wide-ranging as psychoneurosis, social
inheritance and the Oedipus complex.
Blood Trail of a Serial Killer Detective Tom Richards just retired
after serving twenty-five years in the New Orleans, Louisiana
Police Department. For years, he had to stand by, and watch some of
the most hardened criminals skate through the justice system, with
only a slap on the wrist. In some cases, the criminal was back on
the street before the paperwork could even be filed. There will be
no more paperwork or court proceedings. When Tom takes on a case,
he makes sure that the punishment fits the crime. "Period" There is
a serial killer on the loose in New Orleans. Mutilated bodies of
young boys are turning up on Catholic premises around the city.
This psychopath is cunning and devious, but Tom has picked up his
trail. Tom Richards is for the people and by the people. Sometimes
an honest law abiding citizen just reaches that point where enough
is enough, and now its time that true justice is served.
Most books on beekeeping describe how to perform beekeeping tasks.
These books talk mostly about the mechanical parts of beekeeping.
There are many beekeeping books on the market for you to choose
from. You could, in most cases, remove the title from one of those
books and post it on another without noticing any difference. When
writing this book I wanted to blend the mechanical parts of
beekeeping with the passion beekeepers feel when working with their
bees. This book is written not only for the hobby beekeeper but
also for the commercial beekeeper. I have, over the many years,
challenged some of the long standing techniques of beekeeping and
have either modified some of them or created new ones. For me,
these improvements have worked better for today's lifestyle. In
this book I share some of those techniques with you along with my
own philosophy about raising stronger and healthier bees without
placing any chemicals or pesticides inside the hive. I hope that
you enjoy reading this book and that the information teaches you
how to work your bees smarter and with passion. Dennis Brown
Chronicles 300 years in the development of Charles County. The area
known today as Charles County lies along a wide curve of the
Potomac River, just south of Washington, D.C., and across the river
from George Washington's boyhood home in Virginia. It has been
steeped in history since Captain John Smith explored the area in
1608. This commemorative book marked Charles County's 300th
birthday by chronicling its beginning in the 17th century, its
growth and development in the 18th century, and its maturity in the
19th and 20th centuries. It is illustrated with ancient maps and
portraits of historical figures, from Charles Calvert, third Lord
Baltimore, for whom the county was named, to the Lincoln
conspirators, who fled across the county in their desperate escape
bid. Researchers will find an abundance of valuable material: a
thorough list of notes and references is followed by appendices
which include a description of the original boundaries of "old"
Charles County (which included parts of St. Mary's, Calvert,
present-day Charles and Prince George's counties); a list of
Charles Countians of prominence; bibliography; 1790 U.S. census for
Charles County, and a comprehensive index of names, places, and
subjects. This work is cited in the Harvard Guide to American
History.
From the day I picked up my first two hives, back in 1964, I have
been asked questions about honey bees. Some questions were asked by
folks who were just curious about bees and other questions were
asked by folks who had an interest in getting into beekeeping
themselves. Even my scout master couldn't resist asking me
questions about beekeeping. When I was taking my beekeeping Merit
badge exam, (which unfortunately the Boy Scouts don't offer any
longer.) my scout master was so fascinated about all the beekeeping
equipment and my presentation that he got into beekeeping himself.
There is so much to learn about beekeeping. I could spend another
lifetime studying beekeeping and never be able to learn all of it.
My bees amaze me every day with something new. That is what keeps
beekeeping so interesting to me. I wanted to write this book so
that you could learn from all my years of experience and not have
to re-invent the wheel. I have assembled a vast number of questions
and answers for you. Since all of the questions and answers in this
book are in no special order, I have provided you with an index in
the back of the book for your convenience. These questions are real
questions from folks who have emailed me on the Lone Star Farms
website and from folks who contacted me with questions about
beekeeping throughout the years. There is rarely just one answer to
a beekeeping question (especially among beekeepers) but, I have
answered the questions with the answers that have always worked
best for me over the years. I do hope that you enjoy reading my
book and that you are able to use my book as a reference guide for
your beekeeping endeavor for as long as you keep bees. Dennis Brown
Talkeetna is Northern Exposure. Using my life journals, in 1981 I
helped cast the characters incorporated into the pilot of Northern
Exposure. Within the covers of Talkeetna Good Time, you will
trespass on Arctic treasures and be introduced to "bigger than
life" Alaskans.
