The Routledge Handbook of Religious Literacy, Pluralism, and Global Engagement: Chris Seiple, Dennis R. Hoover The Routledge Handbook of Religious Literacy, Pluralism, and Global Engagement
Chris Seiple, Dennis R. Hoover
R1,439 Discovery Miles 14 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Provides a rigorous yet broadly accessible introduction to a relatively new and fast-emerging field that can be used in both teaching/training and professional preparation/discourse. Solid mix of scholars and practitioners. Emphasis on newer, perhaps less known, voices, who have lived the ideas and practices of covenantal pluralism and cross-cultural religious literacy (especially within a minority community). Chris Seiple himself coined the terms “covenantal pluralism” and “cross-cultural religious literacy” – no other book on the market that combines the practical perspectives that this approach does, particularly the cross-cultural and leadership dimensions.

Exploring Religious Diversity and Covenantal Pluralism in Asia - Volume I, East & Southeast Asia (Hardcover): Dennis R. Hoover Exploring Religious Diversity and Covenantal Pluralism in Asia - Volume I, East & Southeast Asia (Hardcover)
Dennis R. Hoover
R3,846 Discovery Miles 38 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the growing diversity of religions and worldviews across East & Southeast Asia, and the factors affecting prospects for 'covenantal pluralism' in these regions. According to the Pew Religious Diversity Index, half of the world's most religiously diverse countries are in Asia. The presence of deep religious/worldview difference is often seen as a potential threat to socio-political cohesion or even as a source of violent conflict. Yet in Asia (as elsewhere) the degree of this diversity is not consistently associated with socio-political problems. Indeed, while religious difference is implicated in some social challenges, there are also many instances of respectful multi-faith engagement, practical collaboration, and peaceful debate. Whether or not religious/worldview difference is part of a positive pluralism depends on a complex array of legal and cultural conditions. This book explores these dynamics and contingencies in Asia, structuring the inquiry according to the theory of 'covenantal pluralism'. Covenantal pluralist theory calls for (a) a constitutional order characterized by freedom of religion/conscience and equality of rights and responsibilities, combined with (b) a culture of practical religious literacy and virtues of mutual respect and protection. Volume I offers a pioneering exploration of the prospects for this robust and non-relativistic type of pluralism in East & Southeast Asia. (Volume II examines South & Central Asia.) The chapters in these volumes originally appeared as research articles in a series on covenantal pluralism published by The Review of Faith & International Affairs.

This book examines the growing diversity of religions and worldviews across South & Central Asia, and the factors affecting prospects for 'covenantal pluralism' in these regions. Going beyond banal appeals for mere 'tolerance', the theory of covenantal pluralism calls for a constitutional order of religious freedom and equal treatment combined with a culture of practical religious literacy and everyday virtues of engagement across lines of religious difference. According to the Pew Religious Diversity Index, half of the world's most religiously diverse countries are in Asia. The presence of deep religious/worldview difference is often seen as a potential threat to socio-political cohesion or even as a source of violent conflict. Modern Papal Diplomacy and Social Teaching in World Affairs (Paperback): Mariano P. Barbato, Robert J Joustra, Dennis R. Hoover Modern Papal Diplomacy and Social Teaching in World Affairs (Paperback)
Mariano P. Barbato, Robert J Joustra, Dennis R. Hoover
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This comprehensive collection offers a concise introduction to the institutional framework of the Holy See, conceptualizing papal agency and positions from a range of international theory perspectives. The authors - international scholars from political science, history, and religious studies - explore multiple fields of papal and Vatican influence, ranging from spy networks and inter-religious dialogue to social doctrine and religious freedom. This book demonstrates that, contrary to secularization theory, the papacy is not in decline in world politics. Since World War II, the Holy See has played a steadily increasing role in international relations. Globalization supports the role of the Catholic Church as a transnational actor not only in the advanced industrial societies of the West but also increasingly across the Global South. In this volume, the authors document the legacies of John Paul II and Benedict XVI as well as the current pontificate of Pope Francis from a range of contemporary perspectives. This book comprises research articles and commentary essays on the papacy in world politics originally published in The Review of Faith & International Affairs.

The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Security (Hardcover): Chris Seiple, Dennis R. Hoover, Pauletta Otis The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Security (Hardcover)
Chris Seiple, Dennis R. Hoover, Pauletta Otis
R6,695 Discovery Miles 66 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This Handbook breaks new ground by addressing global security through the lens of religion and examining the role religion plays in both war and peace.

In recent years there has been a considerable upsurge of public concern about the role of religion in contemporary violence. However, other than historical materials, there has been a relative neglect of the subject of religion and security. The Routledge Handbook of Religion and Security fills this gap in the literature by providing an interdisciplinary, comprehensive volume that helps non-specialists and experts alike understand how religion is both part of the problem and part of the solution to security challenges. Featuring contributions from many of the key thinkers in the field, the Handbook is organized into thematic sections, reflective of three basic questions:

  • What does religion think of security?;
  • What does security think of religion?; and,
  • What happens when the two are mixed in specific real-world cases of religious conflict?

This Handbook offers analyses of how nine different world religions have related to issues of war and peace, theologically and practically; overviews of how scholars and practitioners in nine different topical areas of security studies have (or have not) dealt with the relationship between religion and security; and five case studies of particular countries in which the religion--security nexus is vividly illustrated: Nigeria, India, Israel, the former Yugoslavia and Iraq.

This Handbook will be of great interest to students of religion, security studies, war and conflict studies and IR in general.

Religion and Foreign Affairs - Essential Readings (Paperback): Dennis R. Hoover, Douglas M. Johnston Religion and Foreign Affairs - Essential Readings (Paperback)
Dennis R. Hoover, Douglas M. Johnston
R2,134 Discovery Miles 21 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The role of religion in foreign policy debates, while never absent, has often been sidelined by popular prejudices and secular demands. The religious resurgence in America and the threat of extremist terrorism abroad have paved the way for a renewed recognition of the necessity of careful and candid dialogue about religion's place in international affairs. In recent years, scholars, practitioners, and policymakers have consistently reflected upon the role of religion in foreign policy, resulting in a vast, rich array of resources important for moving forward in an increasingly pluralistic world. Dennis Hoover and Douglas Johnston here present the writings of leading scholars, revealing distinctive approaches to religion and global politics. Religion and Foreign Affairs offers readers a broad selection of essays, ranging across cultures and worldviews. From the ethics of force and peacemaking to globalization and American foreign policy, this compendium provides a solid introduction to the field of religion and foreign affairs that will stimulate discussion and encourage intelligent practice.

Prospects and Ambiguities of Globalization - Critical Assessments at a Time of Growing Turmoil (Hardcover, New): James W.... Prospects and Ambiguities of Globalization - Critical Assessments at a Time of Growing Turmoil (Hardcover, New)
James W. Skillen; Contributions by Alice-Catherine Carls, Charles L. Glenn, Dennis R. Hoover, Rodney D. Ludema, …
R3,190 Discovery Miles 31 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Assumptions and institutions that we have taken for granted for fifty years are proving inadequate for the world now emerging. Moreover, mono-casual explanations of rapid global change do not work. Religious as well as economic dynamics, cultural as well as political forces, environmental as well as military constraints, are frequently working at cross-purposes in shaping a globe we cannot yet fathom. The essays in this volume reach beyond the mere description of phenomena to explore deeper currents of institutional breakdown and competing cultural drives that are radically reshaping our world. Covering topics ranging from the New Silk Road to changes in school governance around the world, the authors offer a critical, historically-informed assessment of the diverse dynamics that are undermining or nullifying current paradigms of thought and action. Drawing on their diverse backgrounds in economics, international affairs, ethics, history, education, and religion, the authors share the conviction that long-standing assumptions about a state-centered, secular-tending, economically converging world are in large measure mistaken. A paradigm shift is required if we are to understand and constructively shape the twenty-first century world.

Religion and Security - The New Nexus in International Relations (Paperback, New): Robert A. Seiple, Dennis R. Hoover Religion and Security - The New Nexus in International Relations (Paperback, New)
Robert A. Seiple, Dennis R. Hoover; Contributions by Osman Bin Bakar, Manfred T. Brauch, Jean Bethke Elshtain, …
R1,366 Discovery Miles 13 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Religion and Security: The New Nexus in International Relations focuses on a groundbreaking theme. In global security today, religion is not only part of the problem but also part of the solution. This book explores positive nexus points between religion and security, paying particular attention to the resources within the Abrahamic faith traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam that foster sustainable peace. Religion and Security is a lively and insightful collection of analyses by distinguished scholars and practitioners in security, diplomacy, conflict resolution, human rights and theology. As states and nongovernmental organizations alike reconsider their strategies for being relevant in the 21st century, this book provides a practical framework through which both can work toward reducing violence and promoting human dignity. Divided into four parts, Religion and Security addresses themes of war and terrorism, pluralism and stability, military intervention and conflict resolution, and religious freedom and civil society. It underscores a crucial irony: nations that violate religious human rights in the name of "security" will ultimately be vulnerable to a number of significant threats to stability. This volume is a timely guide to the intersection of religion and security for human rights organizations, security experts, scholars of religion and politics, government and non-government staffers and decision-makers, and students in the disciplines of international affairs.

Sojourners in the Wilderness - The Christian Right in Comparative Perspective (Paperback, New): Corwin E. Smidt Sojourners in the Wilderness - The Christian Right in Comparative Perspective (Paperback, New)
Corwin E. Smidt; Contributions by R.Scott Appleby, Mary E. Bendyna, Laura A. Berkowitz, Allison Calhoun-Brown, …
R1,915 Discovery Miles 19 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While the Christian Right has been the subject of a good deal of scholarly analysis, it has not been adequately studied within a comparative context -- across time, across different institutional systems, or across different religious communities. In Sojourners in the Wilderness, a host of distinguished scholars examine these dimensions of the Christian Right. The contributors analyze the Christian Right historically -- what is its relationship today with earlier manifestations? How have its organizational structures and strategies changed over time? Sociologically -- what are the current opportunities for Christian Right inroads within African-American, Catholic, and Jewish communities?; and politically -- what accounts for the affinity between many evangelical Protestants and the Christian Right within the American political context, while such an affinity appears to be lacking in other political contexts? All of those interested in religion's role in politics and history will find this book valuable.
