Active Plasmonic Devices - Based on Magnetoplasmonic Nanostructures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Diana Martin Becerra Active Plasmonic Devices - Based on Magnetoplasmonic Nanostructures (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Diana Martin Becerra
R3,272 Discovery Miles 32 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This thesis investigates the effect of the magnetic field on propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), or surface plasmons for short. Above all, it focuses on using the magnetic field as an external agent to modify the properties of the SPPs, and therefore achieving active devices. Surface plasmons are evanescent waves that arise at metal-dielectric interfaces. They can be strongly confined (beyond the light diffraction limit), and provide a strong enhancement of the electromagnetic field at the interface. These waves have led to the development of plasmonic circuitry, which is a key candidate as an alternative to electronic circuitry and traditional optical telecommunication devices, since it is faster than the former and less bulky than the latter. Adopting both a theoretical and an experimental point of view, the book analyzes the magnetic modulation in SPPs by means of an interferometer engraved in a multilayer combining Au and Co. In this interferometer, which acts like a modulator, the SPP magnetic modulation is studied in detail, as are the parameters that have a relevant impact on it, simple ways to enhance it, its spectral dependence, and the highly promising possibility of using this system for biosensing. The thesis ultimately arrives at the conclusion that this method can provide values of modulations similar to other active methods used in plasmonics.

Camps Revisited - Multifaceted Spatialities of a Modern Political Technology (Hardcover): Irit Katz, Diana Martin, Claudio Minca Camps Revisited - Multifaceted Spatialities of a Modern Political Technology (Hardcover)
Irit Katz, Diana Martin, Claudio Minca
R3,156 Discovery Miles 31 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Facing the current growing global archipelago of encampments, this book project intends to develop a geographical reflection on 'the camp', as a modern institution and as a spatial bio-political technology. This book focuses on past and present camp geographies and on the dispositifs that make them an ever-present spatial formation in the management of unwanted populations characterizing many authoritarian regimes as well as many contemporary democracies. It also offers and investigates possible ways to resist the present-day proliferating manifestations of camps and 'camp thinking', by calling for the incorporation of 'camp studies' into the broader field of political geography and to consider the geographies of the camp as constitutive of much broader modern geo-political economies. By linking spatial theory to the geopolitical and biopolitical workings and practices of contemporary camps, the contributions in this collection argue that the camps seem to be here-to-stay, like a permanent/temporary presence giving shape to improvised, semi-structured and hyper-orderly structured spatialities in our cities and our countryside. Camps are also a specific response, for example, to the changing conditions of European borders due to the 'refugee crisis' and the rise of nationalism in many countries affected by such crisis.

Solomon/Martin/Martin/Berg, BIOLOGY is often described as the best majors text for LEARNING biology. Working like a built-in study guide, the superbly integrated, inquiry-based learning system guides you through every chapter. Key concepts appear clearly at the beginning of each chapter and learning objectives start each section. You can quickly check the key points at the end of each section before moving on to the next one. At the end of the chapter, a specially focused summary provides further reinforcement of the learning objectives and you are given the opportunity to test your understanding of the material. The tenth edition offers expanded integration of the text's five guiding themes of biology (the evolution of life, the transmission of biological information, the flow of energy through living systems, interactions among biological systems, and the inter-relationship of structure and function) and innovative online and multimedia resources.
