As the number of postmodern theoretical contributions to the
literature of psychology has grown, so have postmodernism's appeals
and recognitions of its relevance. Many of these writings suggest
practical applications, yet there is a gap in the literature
between theoretical explications and in-depth accounts of the many
forms of everyday practice that flow from it. The proposed work
will provide a means to bridge this gap.
Gehart's MASTERING COMPETENCIES IN FAMILY THERAPY: A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO THEORY AND CLINICAL CASE DOCUMENTATION, 4th Edition, not only teaches you about family therapy theories, but also how to use them. A resource you will turn to again and again, it covers most of what you need to know in graduate school and to pass your licensing exams. Students love the book's relaxed, down-to-earth style that makes even complex concepts easy to understand, along with its real-world clinical forms -- case conceptualization and treatment planning -- that can be used with clients. Integrating diversity and research considerations into theoretical discussions and practical applications, the book provides a more holistic and nuanced understanding of couple and family therapy. The fourth edition is packed with the latest research, new theories, telehealth practices, licensure exam prep tips and more.

These assignments empower readers to apply theoretical concepts and develop real-world skills as early as possible in their training. The author uses a down-to-earth style to explain concepts in clear and practical language. She also includes extensive discussions about how diversity issues and research inform contemporary practice of family therapy.
Gehart's book helps readers gain the skills and knowledge outlined in current CACREP Standards. It introduces counseling and psychotherapy theories using theory-informed case conceptualization as well as treatment planning. Assignments empower readers to apply theoretical concepts and develop real-world skills as early as possible in their training, resulting in greater mastery of the material.
CASE DOCUMENTATION IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY teaches counselors and psychotherapists how to apply counseling theories in real-world settings. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to case documentation using four commonly used clinical forms: case conceptualization, clinical assessment, treatment plan, and progress note. These documents are uniquely designed to incorporate counseling theory and help new practitioners understand how to use theory in everyday practice. Case studies illustrate how to complete documentation using each of seven counseling models: psychodynamic, Adlerian, humanistic, cognitive-behavioral, family systemic, solution-focused, and postmodern/feminist. Readers also learn about the evidence base for each theory as well as applications for specific diverse populations. Outcome-based pedagogy engages readers in an active learning process. The book's case documentation assignments-created using national standards for counseling, family therapy, psychology, and social work-empower readers to apply theoretical concepts and develop professional skills early in their training. With its practical overviews of theories, conceptualization, treatment planning, and documentation, this is a book that future mental health professionals will want to keep and use as a clinical reference manual for years to come.
