Random Sets and Random Fuzzy Sets as Ill-Perceived Random Variables - An Introduction for Ph.D. Students and Practitioners... Random Sets and Random Fuzzy Sets as Ill-Perceived Random Variables - An Introduction for Ph.D. Students and Practitioners (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Ines Couso, Didier Dubois, Luciano Sanchez
R1,835 Discovery Miles 18 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This short book provides a unified view of the history and theory of random sets and fuzzy random variables, with special emphasis on its use for representing higher-order non-statistical uncertainty about statistical experiments. The authors lay bare the existence of two streams of works using the same mathematical ground, but differing form their use of sets, according to whether they represent objects of interest naturally taking the form of sets, or imprecise knowledge about such objects.

Random (fuzzy) sets can be used in many fields ranging from mathematical morphology, economics, artificial intelligence, information processing and statistics per se, especially in areas where the outcomes of random experiments cannot be observed with full precision. This book also emphasizes the link between random sets and fuzzy sets with some techniques related to the theory of imprecise probabilities.

This small book is intended for graduate and doctoral students in mathematics or engineering, but also provides an introduction for other researchers interested in this area. It is written from a theoretical perspective. However, rather than offering a comprehensive formal view of random (fuzzy) sets in this context, it aims to provide a discussion of the meaning of the proposed formal constructions based on many concrete examples and exercises. This book should enable the reader to understand the usefulness of representing and reasoning with incomplete information in statistical tasks. Each chapter ends with a list of exercises.

Giulianella Coletti, Didier Dubois, R. Scozzafava
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Knowledge acquisition is one of the most important aspects influencing the quality of methods used in artificial intelligence and the reliability of expert systems. The various issues dealt with in this volume concern many different approaches to the handling of partial knowledge and to the ensuing methods for reasoning and decision making under uncertainty, as applied to problems in artificial intelligence. The volume is composed of the invited and contributed papers presented at the Workshop on Mathematical Models for Handling Partial Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture of Erice (Sicily, Italy) on June 19-25, 1994, in the framework of the International School of Mathematics "G.Stampacchia." It includes also a transcription of the roundtable held during the workshop to promote discussions on fundamental issues, since in the choice of invited speakers we have tried to maintain a balance between the various schools of knowl edge and uncertainty modeling. Choquet expected utility models are discussed in the paper by Alain Chateauneuf: they allow the separation of perception of uncertainty or risk from the valuation of outcomes, and can be of help in decision mak ing. Petr Hajek shows that reasoning in fuzzy logic may be put on a strict logical (formal) basis, so contributing to our understanding of what fuzzy logic is and what one is doing when applying fuzzy reasoning."

Fuzzy Sets in Approximate Reasoning and Information Systems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999): J.C.... Fuzzy Sets in Approximate Reasoning and Information Systems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999)
J.C. Bezdek, Didier Dubois, Henri Prade
R5,834 Discovery Miles 58 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Approximate reasoning is a key motivation in fuzzy sets and possibility theory. This volume provides a coherent view of this field, and its impact on database research and information retrieval. First, the semantic foundations of approximate reasoning are presented. Special emphasis is given to the representation of fuzzy rules and specialized types of approximate reasoning. Then syntactic aspects of approximate reasoning are surveyed and the algebraic underpinnings of fuzzy consequence relations are presented and explained. The second part of the book is devoted to inductive and neuro-fuzzy methods for learning fuzzy rules. It also contains new material on the application of possibility theory to data fusion. The last part of the book surveys the growing literature on fuzzy information systems. Each chapter contains extensive bibliographical material. Fuzzy Sets in Approximate Reasoning and Information Systems is a major source of information for research scholars and graduate students in computer science and artificial intelligence, interested in human information processing.

Fundamentals of Fuzzy Sets (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): Didier Dubois, Henri Prade Fundamentals of Fuzzy Sets (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)
Didier Dubois, Henri Prade
R4,604 Discovery Miles 46 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fundamentals of Fuzzy Sets covers the basic elements of fuzzy set theory. Its four-part organization provides easy referencing of recent as well as older results in the field. The first part discusses the historical emergence of fuzzy sets, and delves into fuzzy set connectives, and the representation and measurement of membership functions. The second part covers fuzzy relations, including orderings, similarity, and relational equations. The third part, devoted to uncertainty modelling, introduces possibility theory, contrasting and relating it with probabilities, and reviews information measures of specificity and fuzziness. The last part concerns fuzzy sets on the real line - computation with fuzzy intervals, metric topology of fuzzy numbers, and the calculus of fuzzy-valued functions. Each chapter is written by one or more recognized specialists and offers a tutorial introduction to the topics, together with an extensive bibliography.

Didier Dubois, Henri Prade, Erich Peter Klement
R4,531 Discovery Miles 45 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fuzzy Sets, Logics and Reasoning about Knowledge reports recent results concerning the genuinely logical aspects of fuzzy sets in relation to algebraic considerations, knowledge representation and commonsense reasoning. It takes a state-of-the-art look at multiple-valued and fuzzy set-based logics, in an artificial intelligence perspective. The papers, all of which are written by leading contributors in their respective fields, are grouped into four sections. The first section presents a panorama of many-valued logics in connection with fuzzy sets. The second explores algebraic foundations, with an emphasis on MV algebras. The third is devoted to approximate reasoning methods and similarity-based reasoning. The fourth explores connections between fuzzy knowledge representation, especially possibilistic logic and prioritized knowledge bases. Readership: Scholars and graduate students in logic, algebra, knowledge representation, and formal aspects of artificial intelligence.

Preferences and Similarities (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008): Giacomo Riccia, Didier Dubois,... Preferences and Similarities (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2008)

The fields of similarity and preference are still broadening due to the exploration of new fields of application. This is caused by the strong impact of vagueness, imprecision, uncertainty and dominance on human and agent information, communication, planning, decision, action, and control as well as by the technical progress of the information technology itself. The topics treated in this book are of interest to computer scientists, statisticians, operations researchers, experts in AI, cognitive psychologists and economists.

This volume contains papers read at the 7th International Workshop entitled "Intelligent Agents: Decision-Support and Planning", Udine, Italy, Sep 30th - Oct 2nd, 2004. All papers were reviewed after they were presented, and revised for final publication. As its preceding ones, this workshop took place under the auspices of the International School for the Synthesis of Expert Knowledge (ISSEK) and was held in the picturesque Palazzo del Torso of the Centre International des Sciences Mecaniques (CISM), Udine, see picture below. CISM location " Palazzo del Torso " The workshop was jointly organised by Prof. G. Delia Riccia (University of Udine), Dr. D. Dubois ( CNRS and University of Toulouse III), Prof. R. Kruse (University of Magdeburg), and Prof. H .- J. Lenz (Free University Berlin). As the workshop was an invitational one, there was no need for a call for contributed papers. Contrarily, the four organisers recruited research workers from Europe who have had an impact in the last decade on "Intelligent Agents: Decision-Support and Planning".

This collection of articles is devoted to fuzzy as well as rough set theories. Both theoriesarebasedonrigorousideas, methodsandtechniquesinlogic, mathem- ics, and computer science for treating problems for which approximate solutions are possible only, due to their inherent ambiguity, vagueness, incompleteness, etc. Vast areas of decision making, data mining, knowledge discovery in data, approximatereasoning, etc., aresuccessfully exploredusing methods workedout within fuzzy and rough paradigms. By the very nature of fuzzy and rough paradigms, outlined above, they are related to distinct logical schemes: it is well-known that rough sets are related to modal logicsS5andS4(Orl owska, E., Modal logics in the theory of infor- tion systems, Z. Probability theory has been the only well-founded theory of uncertainty for a long time. It was viewed either as a powerful tool for modelling random phenomena, or as a rational approach to the notion of degree of belief. During the last thirty years, in areas centered around decision theory, artificial intelligence and information processing, numerous approaches extending or orthogonal to the existing theory of probability and mathematical statistics have come to the front. The common feature of those attempts is to allow for softer or wider frameworks for taking into account the incompleteness or imprecision of information. Many of these approaches come down to blending interval or fuzzy interval analysis with probabilistic methods.

This book gathers contributions to the 4th International Conference on Soft methods in Probability and Statistics. Its aim is to present recent results illustrating such new trends that enlarge the statistical and uncertainty modeling traditions, towards the handling of incomplete or subjective information. It covers a broad scope ranging from philosophical and mathematical underpinnings of new uncertainty theories, with a stress on their impact in the area of statistics and data analysis, to numerical methods and applications to environmental risk analysis and mechanical engineering. A unique feature of this collection is to establish a dialogue between fuzzy random variables and imprecise probability theories.
