Selective cytoplasmic organelle and protein targeting has long been thought to constitute the sole determinant of cell polarity and complexity. This view has been changed, however, by the discovery of differential subcellular RNA distribution patterns. Over the past decade it has become clear that selective mRNA sorting and translation contributes to an accumulation of cognate proteins at discrete cellular sites. In this book, various systems are discussed (e.g. Xenopus oocytes, mammalian brain, invertebrate nervous system) in terms of RNA trafficking, RNA-targeting sequences (cis-elements) and RNA-transporting proteins (trans-factors), activity-dependent translational regulation and the significance of the cytoskeleton for neuronal function and plasticity. It also discusses nucleocytoplasmic export of mRNA and viral RNA as another example of subcellular RNA kinesis.
In the last two decades, our knowledge on regulatory peptides and their cognate receptors, most of which are members of the seven transmembrane receptor families, has increased enormously. Regulatory peptides are small proteins which, besides their hormonal functions in regulating cellular metabolism in various tissues, may also act as neurotransmitters, and thus they often carry the prefix "neuro." Many of the cognate receptors involved in transducing the peptidergic signal across the cell membrane via a family of G proteins exist in multiple forms, the number of which frequently exceeds that of the corresponding peptide ligands. In this book, various peptide-receptor systems are discussed, e.g. CRF, somatostatin, TRH, opioid peptides, vasopressin, and oxytocin. It also discusses new strategies such as "reverse physiology" to uncover new peptides and orphan receptors.

Gynecologists cannot fulfill the commitments of their profession without being psychosomatically oriented. Nevertheless, this field needs methodology and scientific thinking just as does any other subspeciality in clinical medicine. Although practiced by all gyne cologists, creative work is needed in order to develop the various aspects properly and to establish postgraduate training on a firm and sound basis. For this purpuse the European Symposia have been planned by several European Researchers on Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology in order to stimulate and integrate clinical scientific data and therapeutic skills in the bio-psycho-social field of obstetrics and gynecology. The first European Symposium in Leuven 1985 concentrated on the psychosomatic aspects of infertility and high risk pregnancies. This second European Symposium in Bad Sackingen centered around disturbed body perception, disturbances of the menstrual cycle, climacteric syndrome, and senium. These topics were elaborated in main lectures and workshops held by outstanding researchers in this rapidly expanding field. The second European Symposium on Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology was organized by the German Society of Psycho somatic Obstetrics and Gynecology, supported by the University Hospital Freiburg/Br., the University Hospital Basel, and the Women's District Hospital in Bad Sackingen."
Februar 1984 in Frankfurt.
