The Routledge Companion to Decolonization (Hardcover): Dietmar Rothermund The Routledge Companion to Decolonization (Hardcover)
Dietmar Rothermund
R3,415 Discovery Miles 34 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The decolonization of the European colonies in Africa and Asia was perhaps the most important historical process of the 20th century. Within less than two decades from 1947 to the mid-1960s several colonial empires disappeared and scores of new nations became independent. Altogether it had taken more than three centuries to expand and consolidate these empires, yet it took less than twenty years for colonialism to become an anachronism.
This essential companion to the process of decolonization includes thematic chapters as well as a detailed chronology, a thorough glossary, biographies of key figures, suggestions for further reading, maps and a guide to sources. Examining decolonization in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific this guide explores:
- The global context for decolonization
- Nationalism and the rise of resistance movements
- Resistance by white settlers to moves towards independence
- Hong Kong and Macau and decolonization in the late 20th century
- Debates surrounding neo-colonialism, and the rise of 'development' projects and aid
- The legacy of colonialism in law, education, administration and the military
An invaluable resource for students and scholars of the colonial and post-colonial eras, this volume is an indispensable guide to the reshaping of the world in the 20th century.

An Economic History of India (Paperback, 2nd edition): Dietmar Rothermund An Economic History of India (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Dietmar Rothermund
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This compact synthesis describes the economic history of India from the Moghul invasions, through the East India Company and colonialism to the twentieth century. Much has been written on the Indian economy, but this is the first major attempt to present India's economic history as a process. Rothermund places the development of agriculture and industry in political context and discusses currency and monetary policies, which are of central importance in all periods of Indian history.
In this paperback edition the chapters covering the `Green Revolution' and the Industrial Recession, and Population Growth and Economic Development, have been rewritten to bring the book totally up-to-date.

The Layman's Progress - Religious and Political Experience in Colonial Pennsylvania, 174-177 (Hardcover, Reprint 2016):... The Layman's Progress - Religious and Political Experience in Colonial Pennsylvania, 174-177 (Hardcover, Reprint 2016)
Dietmar Rothermund
R2,448 Discovery Miles 24 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The religious and political activities in Pennsylvania during the period between the Great Awakening and the eve of the Revolution (1740-1770) were at once typical and unique: typical as far as he general trend of American experience is concerned, unique, however, with regard to the participants and many of the issues at stake. This volume provides a balanced picture of these activities and, more specifically, describes and interprets three interrelated trends that obtained during this period-the transformation of diverse groups into a public, the shift from religious to secular interests, and the sequence of revivalistic fervor and denominational consolidation. These trends are considered with respect to the long-term developments of history, as well as with regard to their short-term interaction in the particular situation of Colonial Pennsylvania. The pattern of the interaction of these trends is delineated in detail with a view to examining the practical evolution of American Democracy and the roots of a distinct American civilization. It is noteworthy that The Layman's Progress attempts to introduce a new point of view into American Colonial historiography by focusing on contemporary attitudes rather than interpreting the period from the viewpoint of subsequent events. To this end the author has utilized a great deal of unpublished source material, some of which now appears for the first time in the Appendix. In addition, an effort has been made to emphasize those aspects of colonial history that have heretofore been largely neglected. Thus, the author gives special consideration to the interaction of the various ethnic and religious groups; more attention is devoted to religious affairs than to political, and the German groups are examined in closer detail than are the English groups. Thoroughly documented, clearly and imaginatively written, The Layman's Progress is a significant contribution to American Colonial historiography.
