Quadrature Domains and Their Applications - The Harold S. Shapiro Anniversary Volume (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Peter Ebenfelt,... Quadrature Domains and Their Applications - The Harold S. Shapiro Anniversary Volume (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)

Quadrature domains were singled out about 30 years ago by D. Aharonov and H.S. Shapiro in connection with an extremal problem in function theory. Since then, a series of coincidental discoveries put this class of planar domains at the center of crossroads of several quite independent mathematical theories, e.g., potential theory, Riemann surfaces, inverse problems, holomorphic partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, operator theory. The volume is devoted to recent advances in the theory of quadrature domains, illustrating well the multi-facet aspects of their nature. The book contains a large collection of open problems pertaining to the general theme of quadrature domains.

Complex Analysis and Spectral Theory (Paperback): H. Garth Dales, Dmitry Khavinson, Javad Mashreghi Complex Analysis and Spectral Theory (Paperback)

This volume contains the proceedings of the Conference on Complex Analysis and Spectral Theory, in celebration of Thomas Ransford's 60th birthday, held from May 21-25, 2018, at Laval University, Quebec, Canada. Spectral theory is the branch of mathematics devoted to the study of matrices and their eigenvalues, as well as their infinite-dimensional counterparts, linear operators and their spectra. Spectral theory is ubiquitous in science and engineering because so many physical phenomena, being essentially linear in nature, can be modelled using linear operators. On the other hand, complex analysis is the calculus of functions of a complex variable. They are widely used in mathematics, physics, and in engineering. Both topics are related to numerous other domains in mathematics as well as other branches of science and engineering. The list includes, but is not restricted to, analytical mechanics, physics, astronomy (celestial mechanics), geology (weather modeling), chemistry (reaction rates), biology, population modeling, economics (stock trends, interest rates and the market equilibrium price changes). There are many other connections, and in recent years there has been a tremendous amount of work on reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, on the operators acting on them, as well as on applications in physics and engineering, which arise from pure topics like interpolation and sampling. Many of these connections are discussed in articles included in this book.

Analysis of Operators on Function Spaces - The Serguei Shimorin Memorial Volume (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Alexandru Aleman,... Analysis of Operators on Function Spaces - The Serguei Shimorin Memorial Volume (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Alexandru Aleman, Haakan Hedenmalm, Dmitry Khavinson, Mihai Putinar
R3,133 Discovery Miles 31 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contains both expository articles and original research in the areas of function theory and operator theory. The contributions include extended versions of some of the lectures by invited speakers at the conference in honor of the memory of Serguei Shimorin at the Mittag-Leffler Institute in the summer of 2018. The book is intended for all researchers in the fields of function theory, operator theory and complex analysis in one or several variables. The expository articles reflecting the current status of several well-established and very dynamical areas of research will be accessible and useful to advanced graduate students and young researchers in pure and applied mathematics, and also to engineers and physicists using complex analysis methods in their investigations.

Why do solutions of linear analytic PDE suddenly break down? What is the source of these mysterious singularities, and how do they propagate? Is there a mean value property for harmonic functions in ellipsoids similar to that for balls? Is there a reflection principle for harmonic functions in higher dimensions similar to the Schwarz reflection principle in the plane? How far outside of their natural domains can solutions of the Dirichlet problem be extended? Where do the continued solutions become singular and why? This book invites graduate students and young analysts to explore these and many other intriguing questions that lead to beautiful results illustrating a nice interplay between parts of modern analysis and themes in ``physical'' mathematics of the nineteenth century. To make the book accessible to a wide audience including students, the authors do not assume expertise in the theory of holomorphic PDE, and most of the book is accessible to anyone familiar with multivariable calculus and some basics in complex analysis and differential equations.
