Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

View 170 quilts that were in homes and collections in Cumberland
County, Pennsylvania, and learn about the county's role as a
crossroads in our nation's history. Documented by members of the
Letort Quilters, specimens from the 1700s through 1970 are
showcased in beautiful detail, inviting the reader to learn more
about these treasures. Their information is housed at the
Cumberland County Historical Society. The curated collection
highlights some of the features that make quilts of such lasting
interest, and basic information about them provides an overview of
quilting over the past several hundred years. It also serves as a
reminder of the value of preserving this part of our heritage
through simple practices such as labeling a quilt and storing it
properly. It will inspire readers to take a new interest in quilts
and leave them with basic skills for finding, appreciating, and
caring for vintage quilts.
This new book anticipates Virginia's 400th anniversary in 2007 by
presenting over 270 beautiful historic quilts and ephemera in over
430 color and vintage photographs. From quilted armor of the 17th
century to crazy quilts of the 19th century, these personal family
and museum treasures include homespun work of slaves and fancy work
of freed women and First Ladies. The eight Virginia-born U.S.
presidents are each represented here, with work from George
Washington's great great grandmother to quilting by Mrs. Woodrow
Wilson. The contents derive from the study of more than 3,000
quilts statewide that were meticulously examined by the Virginia
Consortium of Quilters' Documentation Project. This book is an
important contribution to quilting history and Virginia heritage,
and will be inspirational today for enthusiastic sewers everywhere.
Every entry follows a standard pattern: after the address and
telephone number of the institution there is a brief description of
its history and financial support, followed by the names of the
senior staff, total number of staff, the institution's structure
and services, its main research programmes and a list of its
publications. For this new edition a subject index has been added,
allowing the reader to identify centres of research activity on
individual construction topics throughout the world. The world-wide
investment in construction industry research is enormous. This
unique directory is a guidebook to that investment which will
enable its readers to isolate sources of advice on practical
problems, information on national standards and requirements and
potential research collaborators.
Quilting history encompasses much more than the final product--it
is also the story of the people (women, men, girls, and boys) who
lovingly stitched these beautiful and intricate objects. Just as a
quilt is multi-layered, so too is the story each quilt tells.
Featuring nearly 200 exquisite quilts--plus family stories and
local history--this book provides a fascinating look at quilting
traditions in York County, Pennsylvania, from 1790 to 1950.
Included are appliquA (c), pieced, and signature quilts, fads and
novelties (including crazy), crib and doll quilts, and a special
chapter on quilt construction. York County's 250-year history is
reflected in the quilting styles of those times. The quilts
featured in this book include one made by the women of Bryansville
for a young Civil War soldier, a highly original one made for a
soldier returning from World War I, and an unusual one that
includes fabric recycled from a lady's bustle. They are among those
identified in the 1998-99 York County Quilt Documentation Project,
which recorded nearly 1,600 quilts. This exceptional book will have
immense appeal to all who appreciate the arts, history, and the
creative expression stemming from generations of talented quilters.

A companion volume to the International Bibliography of the Social
Sciences, the Thematic List of Descriptors will be a valuable tool
for all those contributing to the development of information
systems in the social sciences.
This text is published as a companion to the "International
Bibliography of the Social Sciences". First published in 1952, the
IBSS is produced annually in four parts - Anthropology, Economics,
Political Science, Sociology - and has been widely acclaimed as a
tool for librarians, university departments, research institutions,
public and private institutions, and indeed for all whose work
requires reference to the current literature in any of the fields
comprised within its scope. Companion Descriptor lists are now
available for all four main subject areas. All volumes of the IBSS
published to date have been indexed and from this a language
representing every subject covered in this bibliography has been
developed. This language can be used for indexing social science
publications as well as for retrieving the references stored in the
IBSS data bank. The Descriptor List falls into two parts:
alphabetical and thematic. In the alphabetic section, terms appear
both in English and French. Cross reference is made to all four
volumes of the IBSS. The thematic section corresponds to the
relevant volume of the four IBSS volumes.
A companion volume to the International Bibliography of the Social
