Climate ChangeImpact on Coastal Habitation - Impact on Coastal Habitation (Paperback): Doeke Eisma Climate ChangeImpact on Coastal Habitation - Impact on Coastal Habitation (Paperback)
Doeke Eisma
R1,861 Discovery Miles 18 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Temperature and precipitation increase and decrease because of natural causes. However, anthropogenic changes, such as an enhanced greenhouse effect, may result in alterations in the regional climate and in relative sea level. Serious changes in climate and sea level-with adverse effects particularly along low-lying coasts-would affect millions of people. Climate Change takes an in-depth, worldwide look at coastal habitation with respect to these natural and anthropogenic changes. No universally applicable coastal model can be used to describe climatic changes. This unique book provides individual discussions of beaches and barrier islands, cliffs, deltas, tidal flats and wetlands, reefs, and atolls. The impact of climatic change on coastal ecology and agriculture is investigated, and human responses to the effects of climatic change along the world's coasts are included.

Suspended Matter in the Aquatic Environment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993): Doeke Eisma Suspended Matter in the Aquatic Environment (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1993)
Doeke Eisma
R2,967 Discovery Miles 29 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The purpose of this book is to give an introduction to the most important aspects of suspended matter in the aquatic environment: its origin and composition, the concentration distribution, transport and deposition, and the most important physical-chemical-bio logical process that affects suspended matter: flocculation. In Chap ter 1 the development of suspended matter observation and study throughout history is given, with the coming of a more modern approach during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, and the development of the present science of suspended matter after 1945. The sources of suspended matter in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and the sea are discussed in Chapter 2, which includes the supply of detrital particles as well as the formation of new particles in the water (organic matter, carbonate, opal). The concentration distribution of suspended matter in rivers, lakes, estuaries, tidal is discussed in Chapter 3, to which is areas, lagoons, and in the sea added a discussion on the sampling of suspended matter and on methods to determine its concentration. Particle composition is treated in Chapter 4, to which is added a section (4. 6) on the compositional analysis of suspended particles. Also included is a discussion on particle surface characteristics and the adsorption of elements and compounds onto particles."

Engineered Coasts (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Jiyu Chen, Doeke Eisma, Kenji Hotta, H. Jesse Walker Engineered Coasts (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Jiyu Chen, Doeke Eisma, Kenji Hotta, H. Jesse Walker
R4,686 Discovery Miles 46 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Increasing population, expanding industry and commerce, and tourism are placing added pressures on an already highly-utilized coastal zone. This book, through a series of case studies, illustrates the variety of changes already made along the coastlines of the world. The examples used are mainly from China, Japan, The Netherlands, and the United States, all countries with extensively engineered shorelines. Modifications emphasized include those associated with protection against coastal erosion, building of artificial beaches and islands, reclamation for aquaculture and agriculture, and the construction of harbors. The information in this book should be useful for all planners and engineers involved in the construction of coastal engineering works and for students interested in coastal modification.
