The Newnes Know It All Series takes the best of what our authors
have written to create hard-working desk references that will be an
engineer's first port of call for key information, design
techniques and rules of thumb. Guaranteed not to gather dust on a
shelf! III Preamplifiers and Amplifiers
This true account of the rise of country music is told by a 1940s' band musician, Don Davis, who became a music business executive and worked with all the Grand Ole Opry stars. Johnny Cash, the Carter family, Waylon Jennings, Minnie Pearl, Roy Acuff, and many others were his friends and appear throughout the book. They played from Mobile to Nashville and back again to his beloved Alabama. This masterful storyteller recalls colorful songwriters, record personalities, and fans with real incidents over his sixty-year career, that will move readers from laughter to tears. View 100 photographs showing real people, places, and instruments that have become country music legends. The stories will inform the fans and inspire current musicians to keep to their roots and enjoy the music.
This book explains the importance of psychological factors for achievement and performance in competitive sport. It deals with the development of ability, maximization of performance in competition, emotional health, social adjustement and general well being of the participants in sport. The two main aims are firstly to select and outline ways in which young people can learn to become highly skilled and well adjusted sportsmen and secondly to describe the techniques by which players, having become highly skilled, can perform consistently well under pressure or stress. This book is based on tried and tested methods in teaching and on extensive research findings in the field of sport psychology. There is a strong bias towards the practical and most chapters contain specific guidelines to be followed and detailed practices to be undertaken, making it ideal as a practical text for teachers, coaches or as an aid to self-improvement in the competitor.
They smelled the foul odors. They heard the power saw buzzing in the dead of night but neighbors never imagined the horrors happening right next door.
This hugely successful blockbuster stars Keanu Reeves as Neo, a young computer hacker who comes to believe that the world around him is not as it appears to be. With the aid of mysterious subversive Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Neo discovers that his whole existence as he knows it is a lie. Together with Morpheus' acolyte Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), Neo begins to fight back against the computerised hierarchy which is secretly manipulating the human race.
Long considered one of the key books on the well-informed audio engineer's shelf, Sound System Engineering provides an accurate, complete, and concise tool for all those involved in designing, implementing, and testing sound reinforcement systems. This new fourth edition includes eight new chapters leading the reader through both cutting-edge topics-e.g., IBM's proposed thought-controlled sound system-and solid basics, such as loudspeaker specifications, wave equations, and digital audio. Topics covered include: Psychoacoustics and how the brain processes sound Digital theory Mathematics for audio systems Using the decibel Interfacing electrical and acoustical systems Audio and acoustic measurements Large room and small room acoustics Designing for acoustic gain Designing for speech intelligibility Wave equations Microphones Loudspeakers, loudspeaker arrays, and loudspeaker directivity Power ratings for amplifiers and loudspeakers Computer-aided system design Signal delay, signal synchronization, and signal processing Sound system equalization Packed with numerous illustrations and useful appendices, this is a concentrated capsule of industry standards and knowledge that spans the complete range of sound systems, from the simplest all-analog paging systems to the largest multi-purpose digital systems.
Eugene Cernan is a unique American who came of age as an astronaut during the most exciting and dangerous decade of spaceflight. His career spanned the entire Gemini and Apollo programs, from being the first person to spacewalk all the way around our world to the moment when he left man's last footprint on the Moon as commander of Apollo 17.
This book addresses the problem of articulatory speech synthesis based on computed vocal tract geometries and the basic physics of sound production in it. Unlike conventional methods based on analysis/synthesis using the well-known source filter model, which assumes the independence of the excitation and filter, we treat the entire vocal apparatus as one mechanical system that produces sound by means of fluid dynamics. The vocal apparatus is represented as a three-dimensional time-varying mechanism and the sound propagation inside it is due to the non-planar propagation of acoustic waves through a viscous, compressible fluid described by the Navier-Stokes equations. We propose a combined minimum energy and minimum jerk criterion to compute the dynamics of the vocal tract during articulation. Theoretical error bounds and experimental results show that this method obtains a close match to the phonetic target positions while avoiding abrupt changes in the articulatory trajectory. The vocal folds are set into aerodynamic oscillation by the flow of air from the lungs. The modulated air stream then excites the moving vocal tract. This method shows strong evidence for source-filter interaction. Based on our results, we propose that the articulatory speech production model has the potential to synthesize speech and provide a compact parameterization of the speech signal that can be useful in a wide variety of speech signal processing problems. Table of Contents: Introduction / Literature Review / Estimation of Dynamic Articulatory Parameters / Construction of Articulatory Model Based on MRI Data / Vocal Fold Excitation Models / Experimental Results of Articulatory Synthesis / Conclusion
Eastern spirituality has exerted considerable influence on the fields of counseling and psychology through the use of mindfulness-based practices. This book serves as a practical introduction to integrating mindfulness-based practices in therapy, with a focus on assessing whether it is appropriate to use or adapt mindfulness activities to the specific cultural identity or identities of clients. Interventions can be adapted to account for clients' religious/spiritual identity, gender norms, racial/ethnic background, community values and pressures, personality traits, unfamiliarity with mindfulness-based practices, cognitive flexibility, and individual life experiences. The authors present an approach to integrating mindfulness in therapy that emphasizes cultural humility, which combines an accurate view of oneself (including limits in one's awareness, knowledge, and skills for working with individuals from diverse groups) with the ability to cultivate an "other-oriented" stance, thus enhancing one's ability to work with clients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. By incorporating this client-centered approach, therapists will be better able to align the therapy process with clients' values, narratives about change, and therapy goals.
This is a new release of the original 1945 edition.
