James Stewart plays a vengeful cow-herder who arrives in New Mexico determined to find the man who was responsible for the killing of his brother. His brother was shot down by Apaches armed with automatic rifles, and Stewart is looking for the man who sold them to the Indians. Following 'Winchester 73', 'Bend in the River', 'The Naked Spur' and 'The Far Country', this was the last of the five classic westerns Stewart made with director Anthony Mann.
Double bill of two classic adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel 'The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde', in which a scientist investigates the nature of good and evil. The first, made in 1932, stars Frederic March, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as both the cultured man and the neanderthal. The second version was made in 1941, with Spencer Tracy in the lead role, and a strong supporting cast that included Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner.
Director John Ford's classic tale of a childhood spent in a turn-of-the-century Welsh mining village. Focusing on one family and their six sons, the action is seen through the eyes of young Huw (Roddy McDowall), and charts the everyday struggles of the local community. Nominated in the same year as 'Citizen Kane', 'The Maltese Falcon', 'The Little Foxes' and 'Suspicion', 'How Green Was My Valley' won the Oscar for Best Picture and also earned Ford the award for Best Director.
D.W. Griffith co-writes and directs this epic and controversial account of the American Civil War and its aftermath. It tells the story of two families, the pro-Union Stonemans from the North and the pro-Confederacy Camerons from the South, and the way in which they are both caught up in the turmoil which befalls a sleepy Deep South town when Northern Abolitionists threaten to outlaw the slave trade which has existed there for years. Things go from bad to worse when Ben Cameron (Henry B. Walthall)'s little sister dies at the hands of Gus (Walter Long), a black farmhand, and Ben dons a Ku Klux Klan mask both to avenge her death and to come to the rescue of his beloved girlfriend Elsie (Lillian Gish), who has been kidnapped by a corrupt mixed-race governor.
