Dr. Omar Bagasra MD PhD, Dr. Donald Gene Pace PhD
R696 Discovery Miles 6 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How many human immune systems are there? How old are they? Why is there no AIDS vaccine? Is a new approach needed? Why is public opinion growing skeptical of the scientific community after three decades of public awareness about HIV/AIDS?

Consider answers to these puzzling questions. Learn from the decades of experience of two senior scholars: Dr. Omar Bagasra (an eminent molecular biologist, immunologist, and retrovirologist) and Dr. Donald Gene Pace (a highly published writer who examines public health policy). Explore intriguing new possibilities about human immunity, and the development of an effective AIDS vaccine.

Read Immunology and the Quest for an HIV Vaccine. Benefit from an informed synthesis backed by a wealth of peer-reviewed scientific references. Review basic concepts of immunology, and stretch your perspective by contemplating this creative synthesis that provides a provocative treatise on the origin, evolution, and etiology of several forms of immune systems. Consider compelling ideas that will have an important bearing on HIV vaccine development. Enjoy this informative volume designed for anyone interested in the development of a safe AIDS vaccine, for anyone curious about present knowledge about human immunity, and for anyone yearning for a solution to the global pandemic that is AIDS.

Unfettering Confession - Ritualized Performance in Spanish Narrative and Drama (Paperback): Donald Gene Pace Unfettering Confession - Ritualized Performance in Spanish Narrative and Drama (Paperback)
Donald Gene Pace
R992 Discovery Miles 9 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Confessional literature stretches beyond autobiography and overlaps every literary genre. It is eminently dramatic and always performative, it is a hopeful crying out in response to crisis, and a plea for reconciliation with community. It is an individual's private admission of guilt or a community's open plea for mercy, an auricular-ocular confession, and a pervasive human activity that is both heard and seen. This study introduces two major theoretical perspectives that have been consistently overlooked: the performance nature of confession, and the incorrect classification of confession as only a subset of autobiography. As this book demonstrates, confession is not always autobiographical but is always performative.

Reassessing HIV Vaccine Design & Approaches - Towards a Paradigm Shift (Hardcover): Omar Bagasra, Donald Gene Pace Reassessing HIV Vaccine Design & Approaches - Towards a Paradigm Shift (Hardcover)

Why do we not have a vaccine for HIV? What are we doing wrong? Every HIV vaccine has failed so far, and public opinion is turning pessimistic against the scientific community. HIV vaccine efforts need a major shift in strategy. They require a better understanding of the immunological mechanisms that prevent African primates from getting AIDS. None of the 40 species of African primates, including chimpanzees and gorillas, get AIDS, even though all of them carry HIV-like viruses in their bodies. Why are they "naturally vaccinated," while all of the man-made vaccines against HIV have failed miserably? This book offers intriguing new possibilities for the nature of human immunity, and the development of an effective AIDS vaccine. It is also a provocative treatise on the origin, evolution, and etiology of several forms of immune systems that is supported by a wealth of peer-reviewed scientific references. The compelling ideas presented in this study should have an important bearing on HIV vaccine development. It is a must read for anyone interested in the development of a safe AIDS vaccine, and for individuals interested in human immunity generally.

Commodities, Cash, and Clerics - Economic Priorities and Administrative Strategies in Nineteenth Century Utah (Paperback):... Commodities, Cash, and Clerics - Economic Priorities and Administrative Strategies in Nineteenth Century Utah (Paperback)
Donald Gene Pace
R469 Discovery Miles 4 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The massive movement of pioneer migrants into the Great American West has long captured the attention of writers. As with immigration to America generally, the prime motive for trans-Atlantic uprooting and settlement was economic. Yet there are major exceptions, such as John Winthrop's Puritans, whose city-on-a-hill motives were largely other-worldly. So it was with the great Mormon migration that resulted in the unlikely confluence of desert and Saints in the Great Basin. These members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, imbued with the religious zeal needed to reenact the Hebrew exodus on an American stage, had been the victims of intolerance and bigotry. Their momentous spiritual odyssey in the West required economic diligence to achieve. Their economy was in many ways typical of that of other areas; cash was used, but commodities were also a major means of exchange. Yet there was a major difference, a practice seen nowhere else in America on the scale to which it emerged in Utah. For numerous Latter-day Saints, the first and foremost religious duty, and economic priority, was to give away one-tenth of their increase to the Church. Payment of the religious tithe became both common and extensive, so much so that the management of commodities became a major concern. This area of public resource management not only had religious implications, but also economic and social welfare consequences. As settlements expanded, tithing donations likewise grew, and an accompanying network of bishops proliferated to manage the tithing resources at the local, regional, and central levels. It is on these leaders, these ecclesiastical managers of donated resources that could melt, rot, make noise, and even run away, that this book focuses.
