This Handbook is a comprehensive reference book for libraries,
scholars, and comparative and international studies researchers. It
contains 33 chapters on all major educational topics, including
research using all qualitative and quantitative methodologies, with
research from 23 countries and all inhabited continents. Here you
as a scholar will find research from countries not usually known
for published educational schooling topics. The globalization of
educational research has not typically kept pace with the
globalization of economies or communication technologies. This
Handbook includes expanded research capabilities from both
developed and less developed countries throughout the world.
Originally published in 1987, at a time when central government
control of education in many countries was growing rapidly, this
book on the historical determinants of US educational legislation
was of great relevance. The book looks in detail at the history of
the relationship between the US Government and the provision of
educational services. It assesses the contributions made to
educational legislation by key political figures such as Franklin,
Washington and Jefferson. The author also examines in depth the
role of congress and the president, the relationship between the
federal government and the state legislature and the role of the
judiciary in education. An account of the hard-fought battle for
the right to equal educational opportunities for the American Negro
and the American Indian is of considerable interest. Finally, the
book compares the American educational system at the time with that
of other countries.
The preparation of suitably qualified teachers is vital for
political, social and economic growth in developing countries. Some
major problems have been caused by the enormous growth in primary
enrolment and by the need to train more teachers without reducing
standards, exacerbated by the fact that in many cases the structure
of teacher education is still in its formative stages. However,
these problems can lead to innovative options and solutions.
Originally published in 1988, this book reports on research and
practice in teacher education around the world. It examines, for
example, what happens to teacher education at times of great social
change or political unrest, as in South Africa or Cyprus, how
programmes in, for example, Nigeria or China approach minority
education and how teachers are prepared for the teaching of
indigenous populations such as the Saskatchevan Indians in Canada.
These examples of international teacher education practice are
presented within a specific national, regional and cultural context
and provide important perspectives on the traditional views of how
teachers are and should be prepared and professionally maintained.
The book will be of interest to all involved in teacher education,
adult education and curriculum design as well as to students of
development studies.

Across the world cattle remain absolutely essential to
civilization's survival as a source of food, clothing, and labor.
Human beings eat beef and ice cream, drink milk, wear leather, and
love hamburgers and hot dogs. This book describes the history of
the domestication and deification of the cow and bull and their
intimate relation to humans. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
scares reveal its continued importance in daily life.
This book provides a new approach to curriculum development. It
combines past with present schooling needs by drawing on Western
historical traditions in the philosophy of education and contempary
designs for specific student groups.
Outcasts and Heretics is a historical survey of independent thought
in action. Divided into two sections, "Modern Outcasts" and "The
Legacy of Religious Heresy and Dissent," professor emeritus Donald
K. Sharpes traces common themes between courageous historical
individuals. Often looking at individuals in the context of
religion, Sharpes paints profiles of individuals who stood up
against oppressing forces and overwhelming odds. Offering numerous
profiles of varying lengths, the selection ranges from such
well-known 20th century figures as Gandhi to esoteric historical
figures, such as John Leo. Outcasts and Heretics is an inspiring
book for all readers.
The Evolution of the Social Sciences charts the development of the
main social sciences-religion, history, philosophy, law, sociology,
anthropology, and economics-through an examination of the lives and
works of each discipline's key historical figures. Sharpes
concentrates on areas of convergence, overlap, and disjunction,
discussing the many ways that these figures have influenced
scholarly development throughout the social sciences. Written in an
engaging style accessible to a wide academic audience, this
biographical map demonstrates the diversity and range of inquiries
into human social behavior.
This book covers the history of schooling from ancient times to the present, including biographies of major non-western figures as well as the canon of educational innovators. Sharples' approach synthesizes historical, philosophical and cultural standpoints. The text contains practical teaching applications alongside theory and an integrated emphasis of diversity and other multicultural themes.
This book is a partial review of the shift in American politics to
a more radical, ultraconservative, far-right posture, among both
the people and Republican congressional leadership during the Trump
era. There is also a corresponding shift to the left among
Democrats, and a dramatic rise, as high as 40% among Independent
voters. My theme is simple. The Trump presidency and the 115th
Congress was an updated Confederate government enabled by Russia.
Trump and ultraconservatives allowed themselves to be sponsored and
endorsed by an autocratic dictator, Putin, because Putin and his
obedient oligarchs gave Trump money and power to flourish and
demolish at least two pillars of democracy-the role of government
and the idea of an inclusive society, while also perverting our
global alliances. Additionally, and apart from Russia, the
ultraconservative and Libertarian aim has always been to reduce any
new legislation sponsoring social services and to attempt to
disassemble existing social legislation. Other major goals are
anti-government regulations and the lessening of taxes. I will
describe this tension throughout this book, demonstrate some of
this history, and show how it is the central element in our
political dysfunction. This book is also partially a chronicle
exposing Trump and the Republication-controlled Congress for
willful damage to the democracy, and, in the second part, a recipe
for restoring lost or mislaid values and ethics to government and
its citizen constituents following the exit of Trump.
This book is a chronicle of the astonishing rise of Donald Trump,
and reveals the personality and policies of the 45th president
throughout the presidential campaign and the early months of the
administration. The early chapters in the first section record his
lies and deceits, his fumbles and failures, his mishaps and
mistakes, his continuing ignorance and idiocies. Sections also
include indictments of Congresss hypocrisy in not condemning Trumps
errant and misguided policies, in tolerating his endorsement of
white supremacist activities and dangerous Russian intrusions into
the U.S. electoral process. The general voting public is also to
blame for electing such a toxic personality as our
Commander-in-Chief and Americas representative to the world. A
second section describes the libertarian philosophy and its ongoing
influence in our political process, Steven Bannons influence on
Trumps domestic policies, and details historical parallels of Trump
to events during the Andrew Jackson administration. The following
chapters describe ancient philosophical principles of Plato and
Aristotle that highlight how the management of the state can
proceed with virtue as its chief governing principle. A final
chapter describes selected historical revolts that have reshaped
the national character, and an epilogue concludes with an
assessment of how democracy can descend into chaos and uncertainty
and still rebound.

A study of the rise of American radical movements and the
historical legacy of our North/South division in politics
"A most compelling collection of historic facts regarding the
origin of Islamic militancy and its devolvement to the current
anti-Western jihadist terrorists-told in a most readable form. The
thorough scholarly research by Don Sharpes, coupled with his
on-the-ground personal experience, lay out an irrefutable
foundation to counter those today who seem to be blinded by
political correctness and are in denial that the Western
Civilization is literally in a war for survival against the modern
extremist followers of Mohammad. The reader should pay serious heed
to Sharpes' conclusions " Major General Albert B. Crawford, US Army
retired.
This book compiles essays on major countries throughout the world,
including Lebanon, Pakistan, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Israel,
Iran, India, Thailand, Malaysia, Cyprus, Malta, Borneo, Syria and
two chapters on terrorist threats, including ISIS. It is a
comprehensive review of selected countries based on personal and
professional experiences in these countries for the past 45 years,
extensive research and readings, and includes a discussion
throughout concerning climate change. It is topical and timely for
college students, professionals and experts. It will satisfy the
needs of area specialists and military, global, and international
studies' instructors.
