Out and Running - Gay and Lesbian Candidates, Elections, and Policy Representation (Paperback): Donald P Haider-Markel Out and Running - Gay and Lesbian Candidates, Elections, and Policy Representation (Paperback)
Donald P Haider-Markel
R1,060 Discovery Miles 10 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Out and Running" is the first systematic analysis of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) political representation that explores the dynamics of state legislative campaigns and the influence of lesbian and gay legislators in the state policymaking process. By examining state legislative elections from 1992 to 2006 and state policymaking from 1992 to 2009, Donald Haider-Markel suggests that the LGBT community can overcome hurdles and win elections; and, once in office, these officials can play a critical role in the policy representation of the community. However, he also discovers that there are limits to where and when LGBT candidates can run for office and that, while their presence in office often enhances policy representation, it can also create backlash. But even with some of these negative consequences, "Out and Running" provides compelling evidence that gays and lesbians are more likely to see beneficial legislation pass by increasing the number of LGBT state legislators. Indeed, grassroots politics in the states may allow the LGBT community its best opportunity for achieving its policy goals.

Gay and Lesbian Americans and Political Participation - A Reference Handbook (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Raymond A. Smith,... Gay and Lesbian Americans and Political Participation - A Reference Handbook (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)

R2,541 Discovery Miles 25 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A groundbreaking volume surveying the contributions that gay and lesbian Americans have made to the democratic process. In 1969, when lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people first participated as a group in the political process, they faced an imposing array of obstacles. Everything from personal rejection and violence; state anti-sodomy laws; exclusion from the armed forces; and legal discrimination in employment, housing, credit, consumer service, and public accommodations. Nevertheless, by the end of the millennium, LGBT people had transformed themselves into a well-organized and begrudgingly respected political force. In the process, they dramatically changed laws and attitudes across the nation. This new volume tells the story of the rapid growth and remarkable successes of the LGBT movement—a record that makes it one of the most successful social movements in U.S. history and, ironically, the least studied.

The Remarkable Rise of Transgender Rights (Hardcover): Jami Kathleen Taylor, Donald P Haider-Markel, Daniel Clay Lewis The Remarkable Rise of Transgender Rights (Hardcover)
Jami Kathleen Taylor, Donald P Haider-Markel, Daniel Clay Lewis
R2,372 Discovery Miles 23 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

While medical identification and treatment of gender dysphoria have existed for decades, the development of transgender as a "collective political identity" is a recent construct. Over the past 25 years, the transgender movement has gained statutory nondiscrimination protections at the state and local levels, hate crimes protections in a number of states, inclusion in a federal law against hate crimes, legal victories in the courts, and increasingly favorable policies in bureaucracies at all levels. It has achieved these victories despite the relatively small number of trans people and despite the widespread discrimination, poverty, and violence experienced by many in the transgender community. This is a remarkable achievement in a political system where public policy often favors those with important resources that the transgender community lacks: access, money, and voters. The Remarkable Rise of Transgender Rights explains the growth of the transgender rights movement despite its marginalized status within the current political opportunity structure.

The Oxford Handbook of State and Local Government (Paperback): Donald P Haider-Markel The Oxford Handbook of State and Local Government (Paperback)
Donald P Haider-Markel
R1,830 Discovery Miles 18 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Oxford Handbook of State and Local Government is an historic undertaking. It contains a wide range of essays that define the important questions in the field, evaluate where we are in answering them, and set the direction and terms of discourse for future work. The Handbook will have a substantial influence in defining the field for years to come. The chapters critically assess both the key works of state and local politics literature and the ways in which the sub-field has developed. It covers the main areas of study in subnational politics by exploring the central contributions to the comparative study of institutions, behavior, and policy in the American context. Each chapter outlines an agenda for future research.

Transgender Rights and Politics - Groups, Issue Framing, and Policy Adoption (Hardcover): Jami K. Taylor, Donald P Haider-Markel Transgender Rights and Politics - Groups, Issue Framing, and Policy Adoption (Hardcover)
Jami K. Taylor, Donald P Haider-Markel
R2,245 Discovery Miles 22 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To date, media and scholarly attention to gay politics and policy has focused on the morality debates over sexual orientation and the legal aspects of rights for non-heterosexuals. However, transgender concerns as such have received little attention. As transgender activism has become more visible, policymakers, both in the United States and around the world, have begun to respond to demands for more equitable treatment. Jami K. Taylor and Donald P. Haider-Markel bring together new research employing the concepts and tools of political science to explore the politics of transgender rights. Volume contributors address the framing of transgender rights in the U.S. and in Latin America. They discuss transgender interest groups, the inclusion of transgender activists in advocacy coalitions, policy diffusion at the state and local levels, and, importantly, the implementation of transgender public policy. This volume sets the standard for empirical research on transgender politics and demonstrates that the study of this topic can contribute to the understanding of larger questions in the field of political science.
