Joys and Sorrows, by Oklahoma-born poet Donald Smyth, is the author's first collection of poems, and generous gathering of work from rich and diverse life. These poems show the author at his best, rendering distinctive poetic flourishes and imagination. They may begin in mystery and end in sadness; they may start in irony and end in lyric ascendancy. Whether writing about love and hope or about war and death of loved ones, he reveals a voice that is unique and melodic.
According to Donald Smyth, Former Chief Press Officer, Editor of an international labor publication and author of poetry and short stories: "From early days, Steve Schlossberg was guided by the notion that the true mettle of a democratic society is to guarantee full opportunity to the downtrodden and oppressed. As a union organizer in the South, a labor lawyer, legal counsel and advisor to presidents of one of America's leading unions, a high-level public servant and a crusading official of the International Labor Organization, Steve has spent a lifetime dedicated to reaching this democratic idea."
The product of nearly 25 years of research, Pershing: General of the Armies remains one of the most authoritative biographies of the man known as "Black Jack." Newly appointed head of the American Expeditionary Forces, Pershing sailed for Europe in May 1917. Once in France, he set about the task of building an army. By October the Americans were at the front and over the next year became involved in increasingly significant battles, all vividly recounted here: Cantigny, Chateau-Thierry, Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Mihiel, and the 47-day slugfest in the Meuse-Argonne. Although the impact of the American forces on the outcome of the war has been much debated, there is no question that the troops acquitted themselves well under Pershing s command. Pershing s postwar life included an unsuccessful run for president, a stint as Chief of Staff, and a secret romance with a French woman 34 years younger than he; nonetheless, his influence as a leader extended into World War II."
