The Application of the Chebyshev-Spectral Method in Transport Phenomena (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Wei Dong Guo, Gerard Labrosse,... The Application of the Chebyshev-Spectral Method in Transport Phenomena (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Wei Dong Guo, Gerard Labrosse, Ranga Narayanan
R1,348 Discovery Miles 13 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Transport phenomena problems that occur in engineering and physics are often multi-dimensional and multi-phase in character. When taking recourse to numerical methods the spectral method is particularly useful and efficient. The book is meant principally to train students and non-specialists to use the spectral method for solving problems that model fluid flow in closed geometries with heat or mass transfer. To this aim the reader should bring a working knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and should be readily conversant with simple concepts of linear algebra including spectral decomposition of matrices as well as solvability conditions for inhomogeneous problems. The book is neither meant to supply a ready-to-use program that is all-purpose nor to go through all manners of mathematical proofs. The focus in this tutorial is on the use of the spectral methods for space discretization, because this is where most of the difficulty lies. While time dependent problems are also of great interest, time marching procedures are dealt with by briefly introducing and providing a simple, direct, and efficient method. Many examples are provided in the text as well as numerous exercises for each chapter. Several of the examples are attended by subtle points which the reader will face while working them out. Some of these points are deliberated upon in endnotes to the various chapters, others are touched upon in the book itself.

Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading: Wei Dong Guo Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading
Wei Dong Guo
R3,072 Discovery Miles 30 720 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book presents models that capture the nonlinear response of piles subjected to lateral forces. Utilising a consistent approach encompassing new mathematical models, it offers solutions presented as closed-form expressions and underpinned by the same set of 3-5 measurable soil-input parameters. These focus on nonlinear response of mono piles, anchored piles, pile groups, and torsional piles, as well as passive piles subjected to soil movement induced in shearing, sliding slopes or excavation, and earthquake shaking. The models can also be used for pipelines and similar beam structures. Solutions are provided in the form of design charts, with each parameter obtained using available test data and illustrated with real-world cases. The models reveal, for the first time, the mysterious mechanisms of amplification resulting from back-rotation, which have incurred the collapse of structures such as the Showa Bridge and Nicoll Highway, as well as the distortion of piles during earthquakes. Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading is ideal for practising foundation engineers and students at graduate level.

Theory and Practice of Pile Foundations (Hardcover, New): Wei Dong Guo Theory and Practice of Pile Foundations (Hardcover, New)
Wei Dong Guo
R4,608 Discovery Miles 46 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pile Foundations are an essential basis for many structures. It is vital that they be designed with the utmost reliability, because the cost of failure is potentially huge. Covering a whole range of design issues relating to pile design, this book presents economical and efficient design solutions and demonstrates them using real world examples. Coverage includes nonlinear response of single piles to vertical or torsional loading and to cyclic lateral loading, as well as prediction of nonlinear response of lateral pile groups, vertically loaded pile groups and the design of slope stabilising piles. Most solutions are provided as closed-form expressions.

Theory and Practice of Pile Foundations is:

  • illustrated with case studies
  • accompanied by practical applications in Excel and MathCad
  • the first book to incorporate nonlinear interaction into pile design.

A valuable resource for students of geotechnical engineering taking courses in foundations and a vital tool for engineers designing pile foundations.

The Sustainable City (Paperback, second edition): Steven Cohen, Dong Guo The Sustainable City (Paperback, second edition)
Steven Cohen, Dong Guo
R569 Discovery Miles 5 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Living sustainably is not just about preserving the wilderness or keeping nature pristine. The transition to a green economy depends on cities. Economic, technological, and cultural forces are moving people out of rural areas and into urban areas. If we are to avert climate catastrophe, we will need our cities to coexist with nature without destroying it. Urbanization holds the key to long-term sustainability, reducing per capita environmental impacts while improving economic prosperity and social inclusion for current and future generations. The Sustainable City provides a broad and engaging overview of the urban systems of the twenty-first century. It approaches urban sustainability from the perspectives of behavioral change, organizational management, and public policy, looking at case studies of existing legislation, programs, and public-private partnerships that strive to align modern urban life and sustainability. The book synthesizes the disparate strands of sustainable city planning in an approachable and applicable guide that highlights how these issues touch our lives on a daily basis, including the transportation we take, the public health systems that protect us, where our energy comes from, and what becomes of our food waste. This second edition of The Sustainable City dives deeper into the financing of sustainable infrastructure and initiatives and puts additional emphasis on the roles that individual citizens and varied stakeholders can play. It also reviews current trends in urban inequality and discusses whether a model of sustainability that embraces a multidimensional approach to development and a multistakeholder approach to decision making can foster social inclusion. It features many more examples and new international case studies spanning the globe.
