The International Association for Sediment Water Science sponsors a
symposium triennially, during which the latest developments in the
study of interactions between sediments and their overlying waters
are presented. These proceedings are a collection of papers
submitted following the 7th Symposium held in Baveno, Italy, during
22nd - 25th September, 1996. The study of sediment/water
interactions crosses disciplinary and ecosystem boundaries. The
work presented in this volume demonstrates the importance of
multidisciplinarity to the field with papers included in the
general subject areas of sediment/water dynamics,
sediment/contaminant interactions, the role of sediments in element
cycles, the use of sediments as historical indicators,
sediment/organism interactions, and studies of sedimentary
environments in remote areas.
Developing and maintaining a disciplined management system provides
any organization with a blueprint for exceptional performance and
success. Indeed, for larger multinational corporations, a
management system is a critical component for sustainable growth
and performance management. In this book, the authors discuss a
series of fundamentals for creating an operationally excellent
management system (OEMS). The book also examines the business
performance impact of an OEMS across leading gas and oil
organizations, such as Exxon Mobil, BP, Suncor, and Chevron. In 7
Fundamentals of an Operationally Excellent Management System, the
authors discuss each fundamental in detail and provide the
supporting training and workshop materials that are essential for
integrating these fundamentals into the business processes of the
organization. The seven fundamentals identified by the authors
provide a sequential approach for developing and executing an OEMS
across any organization. Integrating sound organizational and
business practices with personnel and process safety management
principles, the book is an invaluable resource for organizations
seeking operational discipline and excellence. Well-supported with
graphics and practical examples, the book provides a simple pathway
for an organization to evolve its management system into an OEMS
designed to reduce workplace incidents and improve business
performance on a sustainable basis. The management system
principles discussed in the book are intended for the business
leader who is motivated to transition his or her organization from
ordinary, through best in class, to an organization of world-class
stature and performance.
Originally published in 1976. This collection of essays addresses
the question of whether a free market economy, suitably modified as
a social market economy according to the aspirations and
requirements of individual societies, could be effectively
recreated. In the face of the trends of the time towards
collectivism, private ownership under state control, this was a
main issue of the world economy in the post-Keynesian time.
Previously it was held that some form of intervention by either
national or supranational governments was an essential precondition
for progress and stability world-wide, but this collection of
essays suggests that this very interventionism created a level of
instability that required a new set of ground rules. It considers
how to plan for free market systems in a rigorous manner and
assesses the real world problems of the day.

The continued prevalence of major incidents (most recently the 2010
BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill) and preponderance of workplace
fatalities and injuries as well as Process Safety Management (PSM)
Incidents, globally, begs the question: why do incidents continue
to occur in today's technologically advanced era? More importantly,
with 80-85 percent of incidents being repeated, the more obvious
questions are: Why do organizations fail to learn from prior
incidents internal to the business? Why do organizations fail to
learn from their peers and other same industry players? Why do
organizations fail to learn from the incidents and experiences of
other industries? Process Safety Management: Leveraging Networks
and Communities of Practice for Continuous Improvement provides a
road map organizations can use to identify and setup critical
networks for preventing catastrophic incidents and for sharing
knowledge in an organized manner within the organization to enhance
business performance. The book helps organizations establish
centers of excellence by activating networks for generating best
practices and practical solutions to workplace business, and safety
challenges. The book covers the full range of activation of
networks including identifying members, defining goals and
objectives, and prioritizing work through leadership and
stewardship of networks. It addresses all elements of effective
safety management and includes simple, easy-to-follow processes
that bring about lasting changes to workplace safety. It also
highlights the health and safety needs of both Generation X and
Generation Y who currently inherit the workplace but are very
different in learning behaviors and experience levels. In a thin
margins business environment characterized by scarce resources,
operational discipline and excellence drives stakeholder confidence
and corporate performance. Detailing the practical application of
tested principles and practices, this book provides a simple path
forward for organizations to recognize the benefits of networks and
to proactively establish and support them within organizations to
generate continuous and sustained improvement in work practices,
procedures, and business performance.
