Loosely based on the author's experiences as a California lifeguard in the 60's, this delightful and hilarious novel evokes the memory of a more innocent time. A group of young men, coming of age in an ideal setting discover the Greek philosophers, and learn that the world of mind and ideas is far more fascinating than anything they have ever known. The story begins in the present, and unfolds in a series of flashbacks as they sit on the rocks above La Jolla Cove, drinking beer and talking about what was going on forty years before at the swimming pool. The Greek Summer sets Socrates and Plato, Nietzsche and Sartre, against a backdrop of swimming pools, blue skies, and beaches, in pre-Vietnam Southern California.
There are two kinds of 'luck' - the 'luck' that happens when things are completely outside your control and the 'luck' that happens as a result of spotting opportunities and your own positive actions. However, it's always you and the way you think and act that determines how 'lucky' you are. It's all about how we analyse the events in our lives, how we respond to them, and how pre-emptive and pro-active thinking can create the kind of life experiences we want. Using an easy-to-read, non-academic writing style and featuring interviews with top performers in the world of sport, music and business, speaker and writer Douglas Miller presents 20 key 'Luck Factors' - patterns of thinking and behaviour - which you can apply in all aspects of your life. .

A quarter of a century has elapsed since Nils Lundberg published his thesis "Continuous Recording and Control of Ventricular Fluid Pressure In Neurosurgical Practice." This publication, more than any other, propelled continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure from the status of a research tool to become an integral part of neurosurgical intensive care, with wide application in the management of patients with head injuries, intracranial haemorrhage, brain tumours and disorders of the CSF circulation. At the same time, experimental studies by Langfitt and others stimulated investigations of the relationships between intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure volume relationships and studies of the formation and absorption of CSF. By 1972, Mario Brock had realised the extent of the interest in intracranial pressure research and organised the First International Symposium on Intracranial Pressure in Hanover in that year. This was the start of a series of highly successful meetings, subsequently held in Lund (1974), Groningen (1976), Williamsburg (1979) and Tokyo (1982), the proceed ings of which have been published as a uniform series of books. In each of these volumes the up to date status of research and clinical application of intracranial pressure measurement has been presented in a concise yet comprehensive way. The present volume contains the proceedings of the Sixth International Intracranial Pressure Symposium that was held in Glasgow, Scottland, from June 9th to 13th, 1985."
The Greatest Escape: A True American Adventure tells the story of the largest prison breakout in US history. It took place during the Civil War, when more than 100 Yankee officers were put in Libby, a special prison considered escape-proof, in the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virginia. The majority of the men, obsessed with freedom, mapped out an elaborate escape plan and on one moonless night, 109 men dug their way to freedom. Freezing, starving, clad in rags, they still had to travel 40 miles to the Yankee lines and freedom. They were pursued by the whites in the area, but every black person they encountered was their friend. On many occasions, slaves risked their lives to help these Union men, and their journey was aided by a female-led Union spy network. Since all the escapees were officers, they could all read and write. Over 50 of them kept journals and published riveting accounts of their adventures. This is the first book to weave together these contemporary accounts into a true-to-life narrative. Much like a Ken Burns documentary, the book uses the actual words of the prisoners uttered more than 150 years ago, as found in their diaries and journals.
'What lies spiritually and cosmically at the foundation of a community like the Anthroposophical Society? In wrestling with this question, I have come to the inner conviction that it is justified to speak of the Anthroposophical Society as a Michael community.' - Paul Mackay How can one understand Rudolf Steiner's use of the word 'we' in the last part of the Foundation Stone Meditation ('What we found from our hearts and direct from our heads with focused will')? What characterizes this 'we'? In the first part of this original and inspiring work, Paul Mackay takes this question as a point of departure, developing a unique approach to working with the seven rhythms of the Meditation. Based on personal experiences, he comes to the conclusion that the rhythms are an expression of the members of the human constitution, with the 'we' in the fifth rhythm having the quality of 'Spirit-self'. The second part of the book considers the same 'we' from a karmic perspective, with reference to Rudolf Steiner's karma lectures, events in the fourth and ninth centuries, the mystery of death and evil, and the restoration of karmic truth.

Just Cruizin' is the true story of my two-month, 16,246-mile transcontinental motorcycle ride. From my home in Southwest Michigan, I first rode south to Key West Florida... my southernmost starting point. From there, I began a journey that took me through New Orleans and west to tour Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande in Texas. Riding north through El Paso, I intersected with the Continental Divide in New Mexico and crisscrossed it through the Rocky Mountain range across the Canadian border. The awe-inspiring Canadian Rockies were a treat to behold as I continued north. I rode the entire length of the Alaska Highway, from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, through the Yukon to Fairbanks. During the return trip through the most remote areas of the far northwestern wilderness of British Columbia, I was plagued by mechanical difficulties. A weekend visit with friends near Edmonton, Alberta, provided me with the repairs required to complete my goal, culminating at the Black Hills Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. This was a monumental project that was years in the planning. I endured vast climate changes, encountered wild animals, mechanical failures, and narrowly escaped death on the highways of North America. This is a day-by-day account of my ultimate motorcycle ride of a lifetime. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/DouglasAMiller

"Ja, ich weiss woher ich stamme..." Thus Friedrich Nietzsche began his autobiographical poem, Ecce Homo. "I know from whence I come." Philosophers and poets have been wrestling with questions of our origins, and our ultimate goals, since the days of Thales and Sappho. "Call Me Rumpelstiltskin" is a refreshing continuation of the process of intellectual discovery begun long ago in Ionia. In these verses, a philosophy teacher uses poetry as a didactic device to gain the attention of students, and of all who have ever looked up and wondered why we are here and where we are going.
